Kizumonogatari

Prequel to the fan-favourite Bakamonogatari finally announced.

I have a relatively short list of things that I would like to see in animated form. Fate/Zero, Decoration Disorder Disconnection and Until Death Do Us Part come to mind. A few more would include Immortal Regis, Blood Alone and my favourite new series Sankarea; which is something that I have telling more than a few people to go and read, anyone reading this included. Fortunately, now I can cross a big one off my list since Kizumonogatari is coming to a sub-par translator near you relatively soon, well, sooner than Street Fighter X Tekken at least. Then again I would have said the same thing about Starcraft 2 but we now live in a world where that game is in stores, and Blizzard is one step closer to world domination through magic and summons.

Koyomi Vamp himself.

Kizumonogatari, for anyone who does not know, is the prequel novel to Bakemonogatari. For anyone who has watched Bakemonogatari (which I’m going to go out on a limb and assume anyone reading this, if you haven’t; go watch it, now!) you have seen scenes from Kizumonogatari in episodes one and fifteen. The opening minute or so of the first episode of Bakemonogatari is entirely made up of scenes from Kizumonogatari; from Hanekawa’s intense panty shot to Oshino’s gar three-way weapon block moment. Not to mention the battle between Shinobu and Koyomi that is teased. The initial scene of Hanekawa and Koyomi is actually the first scene described in Kizumonogatari, with lots of detail on the form of the wind and the panties themselves; it’s quite a hilarious read, actually.

Hanekawa’s Pantsu!

“I think it’s about time I talked about Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. I believe it’s something that I have to do. I met her in the spring break between my second and third years of high school. That meeting was impactful, and also quite devastating. In any case, I thought I had really bad luck――of course, this probably wouldn’t be the case if I wasn’t there, but instead, someone else was in my shoes. Actually, I do think it’s quite irresponsible to say that it was really bad luck that got me into this, and that maybe I should just accept that it was my fault entirely. In the end, I believe that my being there had started that chain of events.”

Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade

I think that everyone expected this announcement sooner. Considering a second season of Arakawa was announced with the last episode, and that Bakemonogatari dominated sales; don’t quote me on this but I’m pretty sure that the second volume beat the likes of ‘K-ON!’. Something that should be mentioned is that earlier in the year Amazon Japan had a listing for both Kizumonogatari and Nisemonogatari. Nisemonogatari, for anyone who has read this far and still doesn’t know, is the sequel novel for Bakemonogatari and is comprised of two volumes, each one dedicated to one of Koyomi’s sisters; Araragi Karen and Tsukihi. Each volume is named ‘Karen Bee’ and ‘Tsukihi Phoenix’ respectively fitting alongside ‘Koyomi Vamp’. This could be taken to mean that the ridiculous amount of money that Bakemonogatari made in sales may have confirmed a sequel anime as well.

Fans of Bakemonogatari should understand though that as Kizumonogatari is a prequel novel, characters like Senjougahara, Kanbaru, Hachikuji and Nadeko don’t appear. Though I have yet to complete the novel so I cannot state this as fact, however considering he meets them all (with the exception of Nadeko) for the first time in Bakemonogatari, I think we can assume that any appearance from these characters will be in a fleeting fashion. Now all you Senjougahara fascination fanatics out there (myself and Kyokai included) need not be worried. Koyomi, Oshino and Kiss-Shot more than make up for the lack of our favourite unclassifiable girlfriend. There are also exclusive characters to that novel that appear briefly in Bakemonogatari flashbacks that are unique and interesting in their own right.

Oshino ‘B.A.M.F.’ Meme

I want to assume that this show will air next summer, which if my other assumptions about shows that should air next summer are right; we should be in for one crazy summer. Steins;Gate has also just been announced and therefore should air alongside Kizumonogatari. Damn I am so excited for the anime seasons to come. What’s Ufotable doing? Tell them to go and start on Fate/Zero! We need to get as many of our favourite stories as possible made into anime before 2012; since by then Blizzard will be done with Diablo III and Battle.net will take over the world by transforming it’s users into demons and creating a portal to Hell in the middle of San Francisco.

Oh right, I should mention that I’m Flags. I’m usually a writer over at Sekijitsu, however since we have stolen Kyokai I felt the need to fulfil the rules set by ‘Fullmetal Alchemist’ and decided that since she’s being so awesome by writing posts for us, I’m going to be really awesome and write some posts for Metanorn. Since no one here will know me however I’ll just tell you a few things about myself. For one I am a huge Sakamoto Maaya fan; anything from her voice roles to her music, you name it, I love it. I’m also (quite fittingly) a huge TYPE-MOON fan and therefore you have probably guessed that my favourite female character of all time is Ryōgi Shiki. I try to get my hands on anything that comes from the mind of Kinoku Nasu and go to strange and wild lengths to do so. Obviously I am a very big NisiOisin fan as well and I definitely consider Bakemonogatari to be the best anime of 2009. So you just made my day. I hope It doesn’t let me down like BRS did but Bakemonogatari was indeed the best show of 2009 so it should be good.

Sounds like Oshino will carry this one, too. It looks like the villains will be cheesy and the leads even more boring, so I expect this to be pure fanservice. But it’ll still sell like hot-cakes, so it’s about time Shaft gave it their “treatment”.

So they are finally doing this. Hopefully they won’t run out of budget in the middle again.

  6. Kyokai says:

This was the best news ever. More Araragi, Oshino, Shinobu? Yosh!

    And, welcome to the team, yo~ You’ll have more company starting August. ^^;

I honestly thought they were going to take forever to get to this but I’m so happy that’s not the case now. Yay for more Bakemonogatari! Or Kizumonogatari, same thing, take your pick.

I’ll also be looking forward to any announcements of Karen and Tsukihi’s arcs being animated since those girls definitely needed more screentime than they actually had.

Finally, welcome, Flags-san! Even though I’m not a part of the Metanorn team, it’s always nice to see another writer contributing for this blog. Will be looking forward to your posts. ^^

Yes, I am commenting on a 5+ year post. It’s funny to see some of the comments like Xiao’s; in a way, they almost tried to take forever to make it. I’m reading the book now as released by Vertical and will be seeing the first movie release at a nearby theater on the 29th.

I’ll play along, as it gives me a space to complain that there isn’t anywhere interesting anywhere near me that plays any anime, and I rung places up and emailed like a mad person to get places to run the Madoka movies….
