Big Order – 09

With this much insanity going on, she’s going to need to cover both eyes soon

I was surprised to find out my boyfriend was actually watching Big Order as well. I asked him about it and he said he just dropped it last week. I don’t know how he was okay with the random pregnancy (followed by an UN-pregnancy) but somehow had to draw the line at a battle in a castle. Honestly, if you made it this far, you’re probably in it for the long run to see how this wild card ends.

At least the scenery is nice…

We’ve reached the point where girls are literally throwing themselves at Eiji, prompting me to put some slightly NSFW images under a spoiler tag. The censoring is still there, but it’s easy to see what’s going on with Iyo trying to ride Eiji’s dick off into the sunset. The whole scene is a big mess, and not even in a good way. Iyo forcing herself on Eiji is hard enough to watch considering how much he really didn’t want to have sex with her. It’s just awkward to watch. I feel bad for Eiji almost getting raped and I feel bad for Iyo being portrayed as a girl who only cares about making babies. Then it gets worse as Eiji’s reason for not wanting to have anything romantic or sexual to do with Iyo is because….he’s devoted to his sister. Great, he really is a siscon. But then it somehow gets even worse as Iyo casually puts on her clothes and goes through an infodump of Eiji’s past as if nothing just happened. I’d feel a little bit of something if I was moments away from banging a guy I handcuffed to a bed and got pushed away at the last second. Iyo has almost no reaction to this though.

As such, any emotional impact that scene could have had is stripped away. It’s nothing more than a bout of fanservice now because it doesn’t really explore any deeper emotions other than Iyo being horny af and Eiji being a closet siscon. It doesn’t get better when we move on to a scene with Sena and Rin. You know the whole Bechdel test where they see if two girls will talk about anything else other than what guy they like? Well, Big Order doesn’t really pass it since Rin and Sena almost always inevitably talk about how thirsty they are for Eiji. Sena outright threatens Rin to neither kill or fall in love with her brother, or else she’ll…I don’t know what she’ll do, but I wouldn’t test her.

So all the girls love Eiji, what else is new? It’s more frustrating now that the whole love-hate dynamic with Rin is gone, and that was the most interesting part of the show. Iyo, my other fave, has been reduced to a dull, flat character as well.

Giggling and talking about which boys they have a crush on in a jail cell, as girls do

The only point of interest left in the show is the flashy Order battles, which are often cut so short there’s little time to get into them. I wish there was more focus on the fights than the end result of this big Gate thing. For example, they introduce a guy who messes with your vestibular system so you suffer such severe vertigo you can’t tell if you’re moving or not (and the visuals match too). That seemed like a really cool power to explore, but he was unceremoniously crushed by a rock when Eiji barged in. So instead of a sick fight we get another infodump about the Gate and alternate universes. Sigh.

In the end, the Gate doesn’t interest me much. For one thing, having a world where anything you wish comes true and there is literally no one to fuck it up because you get your own universe seems pretty sweet. Gennai doesn’t sound much like a villain with that proposal, I’ll tell you that. So I can wish for a perfect life and no one can cancel it by wishing for me to die because it’s my own perfect bubble of a universe, right? Not bad! But Eiji takes great offense to this and tries to stop it, which I also don’t blame him for because this all sounds way too good to be true. Last time it also destroyed most of Japan so, well, it’s no wonder Eiji would want to be cautious.

Unfortunately, he gets stabbed by Sena, who has fully embraced her yandere roots. Big Order has lost the charm it had being so absurd that it was good. Now it’s just a hollow shell of its former self. Oh well, I’ll be here to let you know how it ends at least!

That stupendous wave of Hot Mess had to hit the shore didn’t it? I have to commend them for making it crash in such a way to reveal all it’s faults. Characters were never anything but walking hollow tropes with a bit of crazy edge tossed in, but that edge dulled didn’t it?

..and as far as background? What rejected chuuni notebook did it escape from? That’s just lame!

    See you for the end…

    • Overcooled says:

It crashed pretty hard D: The story makes no sense and all the characters have the most slapdash backstories.

      The end is nigh

I believe most people don’t care about the implications reverse raep. 🙁

I believe most people don’t care about the implications reverse raep.

It wouldn’t cause nowhere near as much of a stir as the reversal because it’s a girl doing the violating. I’m not 100% sure on the subject but I’d imagine most would just brush it off as a kinky S&M play.

      • Highway says:

If “most” would ignore it, then “most” are wrong. It’s still a horrific violation and always wrong. It doesn’t matter who doesn’t want to go through with the act, forcing any sort of sexual act on another person against their will is rape and is unambiguously wrong. It’s not ‘ok’ or something that should be minimized because “Oh, a girl is doing it to a guy”.

It doesn’t help that so much of Japanese popular media and culture around sex is horrible. “He / She seemed to like it, so it was fine.” “If I just keep going, they’ll start to enjoy it.” “No means yes.” It’s just rotten. North America isn’t perfect, or even particularly good, but at least it’s starting to recognize broadly that No should mean No, and that people who don’t stop should be punished. Now, there’s also a ton of problems with reframing and regret, burden of proof and A said / B said, but it’s making progress.

          Agreed.

          • Overcooled says:

            Agreed again.

and to follow up on this, kinky S&M play would be consensual from both parties. As soon as it’s not consensual, it ceases to be kinky and is just plain old rape.

  3. BlackBriar says:

Got to give Iyo her props. The girl’s persistent. Though it’s kind of pitiful to look at if you recall how Mirai Nikki’s Yukiteru and Yuno actually had sex. Not to mention both parties consented.

There’s a huge drawback in Gennai’s utopia plan and that is not taking human nature into consideration. Should all humans become Orders, they’d eventually start flaunting their power, trying to put themselves above others which would later result in killing one another. There’d be increased conflict than what’s already present when they were normal humans.

    • Overcooled says:

Well, after they had sex I recall one trying to kill the other so both parties had a pretty rough time!

The way he explained it seemed as if every Order would essentially create their own universe with their wishes, so they could literally just wish that no one would defy their wishes. But yet again, this show has been terrible at defining boundaries and how things work so it’s hard to tell what they’re really going for. :/

      • skylion says:

That seems to be either a bad trope or a trope some of the genres within anime tend to do badly or something going awry. Wishes, miracles, etc. So undefined! As if on purpose, too! I can understand leaving them that way as you don’t put limits on where you can explore while telling a story.

But I think the hand (so to speak) has to be far more deft at handling that and having it come off as good than these folk are capable of…
