KonoSuba - Fancy Dinner

I had to find some picture to put up here at the top…

winter15-highw So there’s been some jiggling and some obvious girls not wearing bras in KonoSuba so far, but this episode went right off the end of the scale with the titillation… literally. So how was it comedically?

Succubus Services

KonoSuba - a warm welcome

Come right this way…

KonoSuba - a little perspective

It’s an interesting perspective

… Oh, hi! You were sitting there waiting for me to say something? Oh riiiight, this is supposed to be me talking about the show. But there were succubi. And no there weren’t any Loch Ness Monsters wanting tree-fiddy, and no special songs, but they were going for special dreams. You have to think that this was actually not a bad deal, if the succubi keep their end of the bargain. I’d bet that plenty of lonely adventurers would be glad to give up a little vitality for some good dreams now and then. Especially if you can choose what kind of experience it’s going to be.

KonoSuba - whistling

“Who us? We’re not doing anything”

I really thought it was funny the way they had Keith and Dust trying to figure out a way to smoothly go in the Succubus shop. Kinda like back when to get porn you had to go to the porn store. You know, that local VHS tape rental shop that had the conspicuous “FAMILY VIDEOS” sign out front and the selection of one rack of animated kids videos + Ghostbusters out front and then there’s a curtain and you go in the back and… well, never mind. Anyway, when you were going in, you kinda tried to play it cool, so noone would see you going in the porn store. And then when you get inside, there’s kind of an embarrassment about it. Anyway, for all you kids with your internet porn delivered right to your bedroom for free, what this episode did perfectly was pretty much anyone’s first trip to the porn store in the videotape era.

So… Much…

I was kinda surprised that they had so much T&A in this episode, and so much touching. So… much… touching. The whole time the succubus was talking to Kazuma, she was touching herself. Honestly, I don’t know how he remembered any of what she told him, although he was still pretty distracted, which allowed the scene to stay there quite a bit longer than you would have thought. And the thoughts of “I have nothing to be guilty about!” are a wonderful self-justification except for the fact that he does feel guilty about it. But sometimes you gotta do what you wanna do. I also wonder if there’s chance for a secondary business on the part of the succubi, since they have these nice forms saying what everyone’s deviance is, for a little healthy blackmail for some of the more, ahem, out there things.

KonoSuba - Desuyonee

“desuyoneeeeeee!”

Fighting the Temptations

KonoSuba - Mrs Darkness

A classic setup

I think that the setup that got Kazuma in a spot of trouble with Darkness was probably the best way that the show could have pulled it off. He knows that the rest of the girls are not really going to be happy with what he’s doing, not that they’d really be that interested in “helping” him out themselves in the succubus’ stead. So he’s gotta keep it quiet, even refusing the wine and premium crab that Darkness’ parents have gifted on them in celebration of getting a fairly permanent place to live. It’s a nice little insight into Darkness’ life outside of her Crusader status, that she’s obviously from a pretty well-off family, yet she chooses to do this.

KonoSuba - Poor Darkness is really in a bind

So embarrased

And then to have her be the one that he encounters, well, she was the only possible choice out of the three girls. Aqua is just completely unbelievable, because she’s just not what Kazuma would be interested in. And I think they’ve built up too much friendship between Megumin and Kazuma for him to be able to convince himself that the succubus had interpreted his instructions as looking like her. But Darkness is close enough, and as she says, her own disposition makes it impossible for her to refuse him, especially with him being so assertive. That it ends up the way it does is, in Kazuma’s words… “desuyoneeeeeee!” But you have to give it to Kazuma, realizing how much he’s screwed up, and how it’s not the little succubus’ fault that she got caught in Aqua’s trap. He actually does man up and buy her freedom with his sacrifice, although he manages to get an out by just going along with the idea that he was being controlled, even though he knows he wasn’t. But lesson learned, right?

KonoSuba - Protecting

He can be pretty manly

KonoSuba - Man of action

Buying time

header-winter15-highw

A lot of sexy fanservice this episode. I’m actually pretty surprised at it, because the show hasn’t really gone too far down that route before. Well, besides Luna and Wiz having big racks and Darkness being a little bouncy, and Aqua having no pants, and Kazuma stealing Chris and Megumin’s panties, and … never mind. But this one went much farther than any of those previous ones, especially with all the touching, even in the scene with Darkness, who was trying to cover herself as best as she could. Maybe not as uproariously funny this episode, but it’s hard to be when you’re laughing embarrassedly at the sexy hijinks. Stay tuned for next week, tho, when we finally see the legendary Destroyer!

KonoSuba - Darkness reacting

Maybe a little bit of overreaction?

The succubus didn’t screw up the infiltration… its just that nobody could have factored in a barrier put up by a goddess arch priest that rings when a monster/unholy thing or what not enters. Still bothered by how so many anime tend to screw up proportions to give women oversized racks etc. It would be better if they keep things more reasonable, but then again that’s just another complaint about the anime’s art style isn’t it? Everyone already knows and expects this from the anime. I hope they seriously rethink that choice and ‘fix’ it in the blurays…

    • Highway says:

That’s what I said, that it’s not the succubus’ fault. And I’m thinking that Aqua likes to put up traps and barriers like that just so that she can torture whatever gets caught in it. Aqua’s pretty much a complete jerk.

I think you’re shouting into a pretty strong wind as far as what you like to see. Personally, I don’t think they had too much of an issue with that on this anime, especially considering what it’s going for with visual style. Some are definitely bigger than all reason (like Triage X) but that’s kind of the point with those shows. I actually think it’s pretty good of this show to get the physics mostly right with the sagginess.

      • skylion says:

Yeah, they like to animate boobs as if they’re made out of the springiest of spring steel, at that size they very much do sag; yeah guys, get used to reality, it will ensue. Thanks for pointing this out because I thought there was something “off” to it as well; turns out it’s just a tad more realistic than we’re used to seeing.

      • ProtoSovereign says:

Hahaha don’t think too much of it Highway. Aqua is probably didn’t even consider torture, the things she does just naturally make Kazuma’s life harder. She’s definitely prejudiced against ‘evil’ and ‘unholy’ beings though and to top it off is a massive bully when the situation allows. As for the sagginess, lol did they do their physics homework? I think I heard somewhere that big breasts weigh quite a lot. Say perhaps 500g per piece amounting to 1 kg of weight on your chest. I can’t remember the cup size that person mentioned though. Ah but that wasn’t my gripe anyway. I prefer things to be in moderation. Going too extreme in 1 direction if usually not a good thing. IDK about Triage X cuz I heard it was crap and never watched it but I felt that this anime has over emphasized Darkness’ assets. It was most glaring during the bath scene such as in your screenshot. Darkness’ actually looks like melon’s her attached to her chest.

    • HannoX says:

They aren’t going to “fix” it because big boobs sell and fans buying this for home video would be outraged if the girls with big ones got them reduced.

That being said, I do side with you to a degree. One or two rather busty (but not ridiculously so) girls per anime would be enough for me. In this case I don’t think they’ve overdone the big boobs too much in either size or the number of girls with them. Although having most of the succubi being very voluptuous makes sense–they are sex demons, after all.

Triage X is just one example where boob size is truly ridiculous. And it’s badly written, too.

      • ProtoSovereign says:

Yep, this is the sad reality of the medium. In their eyes they “fixed” the in adequate sizes to pander to those fans, and I can’t really blame them for it. Its just such a waste artistically to me. The succubus talking to Kazuma was very well endowed, but she IS a succubus as you pointed out XD. Its a little hard to take characters seriously though when their character seems to be mostly boobs on legs.

    • HannoX says:

Oh, Spammy, did you feel there were already enough comments about the boob size of the girls in this anime?

  2. ProtoSovereign says:

On a side note has anyone seen Season 1 of Saekano? I recently watched it and I wonder what everyone else thought of it.

    • Highway says:

I watched it, and I’m sure a few others did, and really, it left me a bit uninterested. I felt like it never found the groove it needed to, and pushed beyond the boundary of believable reasons for the girls to be interested in Tomoya. I liked the characters individually well enough, but felt like their interactions just were too well-worn and rutted, like they were all just rehashing the same argument again and again and again, and it was like watching some closed group of people that only talk about in-jokes. There was no invitation to viewers into their world, at least through the anime, and it felt like you had to already know everything about them to really get to the level they were talking on.

To be honest, I am enjoying this season’s Shoujo-tachi wa KOUYA wo Mezasu more than I ever did withSaeKano, even as cheap and derpy as the animation is, even as checklist as the script is, and even as ordinary as the whole setup is. I find the characters just much more approachable and authentic, more open, and like the fact that it’s not “everyone’s a genius”.

    • HannoX says:

I watched maybe three episodes then dropped it. It just wasn’t working for me.

    • ProtoSovereign says:

Lol, I think I get what you guys are getting at. Saekano really does jump right in and a lot of it its pre-assumed knowledge so its ez to get lost if you don’t already know stuff like visual novels, comiket, otaku stuff, typical character archetypes etc. The ‘All the people around me are born genius” was quite contrived but maybe I didn’t notice too much becuz I pretty much watched the whole series in 2-3 days. The characters were fairly interesting though and the art was nice and crisp (well at least it was in the BD lol). On a side note the writer chick in Saekano, Utaha is voiced by Ai Kayano… aka Darkness’ seiyuu.

      • Highway says:

The art was good, the whole thing looked good, but I don’t even think it was “you have to know about comiket and VN’s and fan stuff”. I know about that stuff, I was never lost. It was just that the characters were having their own little party, and to me it felt like the audience wasn’t really invited. They already knew where they were going, they already knew what was going to be done. It just never felt like the show really got interesting to the viewer. To be honest, I felt that the best episode of SaeKano was the ‘prologue’ episode they did at the hot spring (set quite a bit after the end of the series). When they went back and introduced everyone ‘properly’ and started going through the story, it had far less chemistry.

  3. zztop says:

The anime skipped Dust’s story from the LN.
Basically Dust gets jealous of Kazuma’s party of 3 girls and insists on swapping parties with Kazuma.
Kazuma’s quick thinking and strategic skills leads Dust’s team to victory over a goblin horde and a giant sabertooth tiger called the “rookie killer”.

Later Dust comes back crying to ask Kazuma to take back his team, being unable to handle the insanityawesomeness of Kazuma’s girls.

They might save it for an OVA.

    • ProtoSovereign says:

That, was so hilarious when I read it in the LN XD. They basically trash talk Kazuma and take pity on him, then nek minnet they are astounded by his strange prowess using “weak” skillz. The turn around had me laughing pretty hard. Might be good for an ova like you said.

  4. skylion says:

When it came to the porn section, I just walked in like I owned the place; or at least I tried….

I feel so sorry for the succubus. We don’t know a thing about her work details, she may have gotten away from Aqua’s “wrath” but what about her bosses; the are demons and devils after all, or does assuming that about demons and devils make me racist?

Yeah, with Darkness they had a well-though out match for that specific scene they wanted to write. It would have been very different had they used either of the other two. With Megu, they could written it to reinforce the friendship or to take it in the romance dept (he’s not that much older than her). With Aqua, it might have broken her defenses down a little bit, only to have them rocket back up in discovering the succubus.

  5. HannoX says:

Aqua and Megumin just wouldn’t have worked for Kazuma’s “dream.” He did say he had asked for a shy, inexperienced, older woman. Of the three Darkness comes closest to fitting the bill.

There’s nothing shy about Aqua. Besides, I don’t think Kazuma and she really care for each other. She thought his death was a great big joke and laughed in his face about it. And he drug her out of her cushy spot in Heaven. So it’s more they’re stuck with each other than that they’re friends. But they are companions, which isn’t the same as friends, so I’m sure they’d stick up for each other and they do work together, more or less.

And while Kazuma would probably enjoy ordering Aqua around, I just don’t see him doing the same to Megumin. He may not realize it yet, but I think he’s developing a love interest in her. Remember how when he was talking to the succubus taking his dream order he kept inadvertently saying stuff about what if you want somebody young, probably underage? Then the succubus sent to give him his dream looks pretty young. So while he asked for an older woman (reaction against his real subconscious desires?), going by the expression of the succubus taking his dream order she knew what he really wanted for his dream partner.

    • ProtoSovereign says:

That’s a lot of reading between the lines goin on there lol Show ▼

      • HannoX says:

It’s a harem. Like almost every other harem I don’t expect Kazuma to actually choose between the girls. But I’m sure most fans think Megumin is Best Girl and he should choose her.

        • skylion says:

Harem is purpose built for fans to pick from and debate/fight/disparage other fans (if they’re insecure) for Best Girl.
