Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo – 04

KonoSuba - take me with you

Pout… pout pout pout

winter15-highw What’s the fun anime you look forward to each week? The one where there’s no chance of the main characters being killed off, or picked up for murder. But there is a chance of cursing and explosions!

Kinda at Loose Ends

KonoSuba - she really likes the staff

What kind of staff is that, exactly?

Everyone did pretty well with the cabbage battle… well, except for Aqua who mostly caught lettuce (it looked like she wasn’t catching anything, but ok). Darkness got her armor all fixed up, Megumin got a new staff, and Kazuma was able to get something to wear that’s not a tracksuit. But they can’t ride that wave of success to more quests, because all the low level monsters are behaving, due to the newly moved-in higher up in the demon king’s army moving into the area. So it’s time to find some stuff to do.

KonoSuba - Nice Bakuretsu

Nice Bakuretsu

One thing to do is go blow up some old derelict castle. I mentioned before in the comments that Kazuma and Megumin make a nice pair, and this time they do spend some more time together. Because if Megumin practices explosion magic, who’s going to carry her home if Kazuma isn’t there? Plus, she has to get far enough out of the city that the guards don’t scold her… again. But with Megumin blowing up the same castle every day, you kind of knew what was going to be coming next. Didn’t you?

KonoSuba - headless horse

Uh oh, someone’s mad

Don’t Make Me Come Over There!

KonoSuba - I'll take that

I like the skull in the curse, too

But of course, he does come over there. The big shot from the Demon King, in this case the Dullahan, gets tired of being blown up, and just wants whoever’s doing it to cut it the hell out. This was just brilliant. The exasperated tone, the “you’re not worth it, just quit giving me a headache” attitude, the headless horse, even the convenient pile of rocks that was outside of the town gates for him to grandstand upon. And even after trying to pawn responsibility off on some total noob caster, Megumin is acting all brave. I liked Aqua’s “let her have her fun” bit. I liked Darkness twisting what Dullahan said in order to try and get herself taken prisoner, and then dejectedly drawing in the dirt like a little kid when she didn’t get what she wanted. I liked the fact that Dullahan’s message was “Cut it ouuuuuut, you guuuuuuys!” I liked all of it. There wasn’t a single foot put wrong in the whole exchange.

KonoSuba - ahhhhhhhh

and the little cherubs

And even when it was done, with Kazuma and Megumin all ready to head to the castle and fight their way to the Demon King, and Aqua solving the problem of Darkness’ curse pulling the rug out from under them, and somehow being treated as the big hero, it was still brilliant. I do wonder where they’re going to go from here, whether it’s time to head out into the rest of the world, or whether there will be more noodling around in Axel. I’m guessing it’s going to be the latter, given that the OP pretty much shows the other adventurers and doesn’t show them heading anywhere far away. But that will probably be great anyway. There are so many little things about this show that make it work, like the scene cuts (which I mention every week), Megumin’s little gasp as she collapses and her pride at her explosions, the pile of rocks, and the way the show isn’t afraid to change the focus around.

Yep, good natural pacing and comedy is very rewarding. Plus they don’t forget the little flourishes here and there like the cherubs pulling the shadowy skull away.

But I wonder if they are going to try to pull a plot out of this….its seems like is should have one. But will that be a risk….

The plot is supposed to be defeating the Demon King. But they’re not exactly doing anything about that now, are they? I suppose the argument can be made that they’re leveling up before setting out. Maybe the last two or three episodes will deal with that. Or maybe not if the production committee hopes for a second season. If they keep doing everything oh-so-right I want a second season.

Or, the demon king is a Macguffin, and the point of the show is to be funny and entertaining. But onoz, that would make it a dreaded “slice-of-life” show, and of course those can’t be good, nosirree. Kiss of death, that label.

My understanding is that everything we’ve seen so far is still in volume 1. In fact, we may only be a couple chapters into volume 1. This series has 8 volumes out.

We probably aren’t going to see the demon lord defeated.

Unfortunately, all places that I’ve found that once hosted it online have been DMCA’d, so it is currently unreadable.

I wonder why it took this long for the Dullahan to go over and complain about the repeated explosions. Given the number of iterations we’ve seen and the changes in weather, they must have been bombing that place for weeks. Though given how he was getting creeped out by Darkness’ speech and just came over to complain in the first place, he’s probably just a passive guy who got overly annoyed by kids not minding their business. Of course there’s the part where he cursed Darkness so he’s still an evil dude but not totally evil since he did not come to fight at all and even demanded to fight fair against Megumin.

Still I think the next step is to fight the Dullahan as we lack some direction for now and one presented itself already. And as we saw, there can still be hilarious moments whatever the situation is so I expect some fun times as they go to that castle.

He is literally that guy in the office that has his stuff stolen from the fridge for weeks but doesn’t say a thing about it until breaking point. Then the most he can muster in response is, “You guys quit it!”. Well that and a death curse, but that’s more a inborn power of his, he can’t help it…

Another great episode. I like that Kazuma gradually became an “expert” in explosions and started critiquing them line a wine sommelier would comment on a wine tasting. He even sounded half-convinced to take up explosion magic (if he ever got the skill points)! Megumin and Kazuma really are an amusing pair…
