Hey look a younger Kyouma!
As promised we got a huge chunk of information on the mysterious girl named Miyabi, but we also get to see a teenage Kyouma going from high school, college and leading him to join up with Grendel which is both exciting and sad since we already know things go south for him after visiting Easter Island back in the day.

Kyouma’s Haunting Past
Hnnnggg my heart!!
After countless weeks debating and discussing about what happened to Kyouma in the past we can finally put that case to rest because this episode revealed just about everything we wanted to know or did it? I mean we still have plenty of unanswered questions like what happened to the other members of Grendel five yars ago on Easter Island? Why can’t Kyouma remember any of it? And we got a special bonus question this week! Why the hell is Miyabi missing her head? Does new Tesla Energy have it locked away? Because Dr. Yurizaki told Kyouma they removed it; however before we get to that question we might as well rewind years in the past and learn to how Kyouma and Miyabi met each other! For starters she was sorta like Kyouma since she was also into older things from the past instead of coil based technology which probably explains why the two of them hit it off so easily? She was also an aspiring photographer at the time and on the night that they met she was trying to take a picture of a cat, but got wedged between a wall and a van somehow? After that I assume the two of them started dating each other after gaining the approval from Tsubaki who is in fact Miyabi’s sister! I don’t remember if it was mentioned last week, but sadly as the years went by Miyabi caught some rare disease which caused her muscles to slowly degenerated over time and that bit of sad news caused Kyouma to freak out and I totally don’t blame him since she was very important to him.

So in order to fix her newly developing muscle problem Kyouma tried to get assistance from Dr. Seira Yurizaki who isn’t a guy but a woman? So I guess she technically was the one who build Mira then or is that not the case? Anyway she was researching advanced robots at the time so Kyouma figured if Miyabi had an artificial body it could would prolong her life. Also he attacked all of Dr. Yurizaki’s body guards and the main guard with an eye patch offered Kyouma a job with Grendel since he displayed crazy strength, he was also given the option that Dr. Yurizaki would help Miyabi if he agreed to joining Grendel, but yeah we all know something terrible happened on Easter Island five years ago and we knew Miyabi eventually dies; however we were given some new plot reveals surrounding the fact that Miyabi’s head was removed by Dr Yurizaki? Why did they do that and where is her head now? I just wanna know how does that story factor into the rest of the series? Will we see a robot version of Miyabi walking around later? And what are the chances that her brain has been inside of Mira the whole time? I mean sure that doesn’t add up and it’s crazy, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. And finally what is actually hidden on Easter Island? A weapon? A gateway to Dimension W? More Ghosts? Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long and we did get a whole bunch of new collectors joining the cast and now were going back to Easter Island thanks to Prince Salva-Enna-Tibesti.

D’awww Miyabi and Kyouma were such a cute couple! Unfortunately it was also depressing since he was going to marry her! WHY YOU DO THIS TO ME ANIME!? While it was sad I kind of expected a coil take Miyabi’s life not some herp a derp made up Key disease! Because we really don’t have a solid answer to that. I was guessing that her death was the reason why Kyouma hates coils or is it the fact that he’s missing a the huge block of memories from his first mission on Easter Island? Personally I think he hates coils because he blames the coils for not saving his girlfriend after putting so much faith in them to do so originally, but at the same time I expected him to hate Dr. Yurizaki instead for not saving Miyabi’s life instead of hating the coils? That part remains a mystery for me along with Miyabi’s body missing her head; however eventually we will figure all of that out soon but until then were going to be exploring the mystery on Easter Island!

I believe Miyabi’s disease is ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Remember the ice bucket challenge? It is a rare irreversible degenerative disease where the nerves controlling the persons’s muscles slowly break down. It often starts off with unexplained weakness in a muscle–usually beginning one sided.
Miyabi’s prognosis also lines up: about 70% of ALS patients do not survive past 5 years. In most cases they ultimately pass after losing control of their diaphragm.
The only thing that does not line up with the typical ALS picture is her age. It is rare for someone to have ALS before 30 years of age, but it is possible and there are definitely cases.
So it’s cool/but-mostly-sad for Miyabi and Kyouma. Yeah; stuff like that is out there.

ALS is definitely an option that I considered. Though honestly, when they first talked about it and how the muscles break down, my first thought was actually some type of Muscular Dystophy. Many varieties are sex-linked and are almost only found in men, but not all versions of MD are.
MD also has a habit of striking at a younger age than ALS. Perhaps they writers even made up some “rare disease” that is a mixture of both?

Thanks! MD is definitely a contender. Though, just like with the ALS idea, there are a few pieces that are weird: sex (like you said) and I’d expect prognosis to be less definite? Totally agree with you on the age thing.
I was thinking that perhaps they were referring to the muscle atrophy with ALS when they were talkin’ about the breakdown business.

Yeah I have duchenne Muscular Dystrophy irl so I can relate to some of Miyabi’s issues and I’ve often thought of the future involving robotics, robotic implants and even exoskeleton suits! Yeah there are a lot of different muscular diseases.

Dr. Seira Yurizaki is different from Dr. Shidou Yurizaki. The two were husband and wife, and both of them were doctors in mechanics, physics, and engineering. Shidou was the founder of New Tesla and the creator of the coil. Seira was THE foremost authority on robotics. Dr. Seira was the one who created Mira. If you remember back in episode 2, Kyoma asked Mira about Seira Yurizaki when she first told him she had been murdered, it was indicated that he knew her from the past, and now we know why.
As for the episode, it was really great to get Kyoma’s backstory and his romance with Miyabi, who looked like she had some form of muscular dystrophy or maybe even ALS, and how it eventually led him to hate future tech. He lost everything to it, all his comrades, who seemed to be really cool, and his fiancee as well.
Al it seems lived, because as the sniper of the group, he was on the water protecting their backs and wasn’t near ground zero.
Grendel just seemed sooo 80s action movie-ish. When they were getting ready to go, I just wanted to yell, “GET TO DA CHOPPA! Move! Move! Move!”
Now, as for the race however to find this mysterious coil. Oh those collectors! Oh the stereotypes! The stereotypes….it was so ridiculous that it hurt!
Loser looked cool, and so did his daughter/son, who is now back in her blond disguise.
That entity at the end reminds me of something out of Star Trek. And that cliffhanger was cool. I’ll be excited to see what happens next.

Predator can sit this one out. There’s enough hell being raised on that island as it is. “Overkill” would be an understatement if he joined the fray.
Yeah, that was painful to watch but it only got worse when one of them actually dressed up as a superhero. I mean, come on! Really? Their corniness is already beyond belief.
I was hoping you’d notice but it seems you didn’t. Take a look at the appearance and mannerisms of the ship’s captain, Cedric Morgan. Blonde hair with a red streak down the middle with a no nonsense attitude. She’s like a more militarized version of Trinity Blood’s Astharoshe Aslan.

Yeaaah I didn’t even think about that…I guess since he wasn’t shown in Kyouma’s flashback I assumed Dr. Seira meets Dr. Shidou later? Anyway now it makes since if she does more medical and the other specializes in robotics now we know both of them worked together to create Mira who has bio parts and tech parts.
Right Miyabi has either ALS or a form of muscular dystrophy which I can relate since I also have a form of MD, but I always understood from my doctor that most people show signs of having MD at very young age like 3 or 4 not in their 20’s but I guess there probably are some that effect you later in life? I do know there are a lot of different types and I’ve known people at summer camps who didn’t show signs of having MD until they were like like 15 or so.

Things I noticed:
1) Somehow, Kyouma has a Lexus LFA, just kinda stored away, but now ready to get trashed on the island. Seems like an odd choice for a supercar to have, since there were only 500 of them ever made, and all sold before being built. If you were thinking of a supercar that would be more likely to have survived, and that some random collector outside of society would have, you’d think more like a Nissan GTR.
2) Why the hell were they doing coil experiments on Easter Island? I guess it’s Rule of Cool, but it’s idiotic. There are plenty of isolated islands in the middle of the Pacific that *aren’t* World Heritage Sites. There’s no way they’d have gotten any sort of permission to be there.
3) I think that we’re going to find out that Mira is Miyabi, or the remains of her thoughts after they were able to build her a full robot body, Robocop-style. There was a bit earlier in the show about how they were thinking of relaxing the 60% limit on ‘artificial’ parts. So Mira is probably just the frontrunner of that.

Did anyone get any Kazuma Kuwabara vibes from the younger version of Kyouma, or is it just me?
Finally some insight on Kyouma’s backstory and as most expect, it doesn’t end well. It’s always the nice ones who die early and a very macabre way Miyabi met her end. This explains in the OP visuals why her head was blotted out in the water reflection of her and Kyouma walking toward each other. It’s especially spirit-breaking when you lose exactly what you’re trying to save, not to mention having the intent to marry. So it’s clear to see now how he’d have been a shut-in if Mary hadn’t intervened by making him a Collector.
Like IreneSharda pointed out, Shidou Yurizaki and Seira Yurizaki are husband and wife. The former is New Tesla’s founder and Mira’s creator while the latter was the one assigned to help Miyabi.
Kyouma’s search for a means to save Miyabi leading him to Dr. Seira Yurizaki also left a clue in place. That they were already in the process of creating completely artificial bodies and had Miyabi lived long enough, she might have been the first successful subject. All of which in turn increases my assumption that Lwai has some kind of ties to that project with his artificial body.
There’s this phrase that goes “There are places Man was never meant to go”. Right now, Easter Island is just that: A no man’s land. That ship’s filled with eager Collectors and I bet none considered they might not come back alive. The sphere that attacked was surely the tip of the iceberg. All that’s left to say is: Good luck!

I got that vibe just not with that character aka those badass badboy types before in most anime and most of the time they are tough and can kick ass, but at the same time they have a heart of gold when girls are involved.
Yeah I’m super curious about Miyabi missing her head and why it was removed in the first place! I just hope that side plot serves a purpose later on.

I have a feeling we’re going to be running into ghosts of Grendel on Easter Island. They’ve already foreshadowed that possibility with the ghosts of the college students at the haunted lake/dam.

That’s a possibility. We had water-based ghosts in the last arc because of the lake. Are we looking at earth-based ghosts this time?

I did pick up in the last episode that Tsubaki mentioned that Myabi was her sister. However, if you read the comments you’ll see that several people had doubts about that. I know I shouldn’t have gloated a bit, but I couldn’t help it.
