Trying to steal her man? BITCH, YOU THOUGHT.

I don’t know why I am choosing to write this immediately after dragonboat practice, but it’s the only spare time I have that isn’t being spent working on assignments for school so…..Forgive me if I collapse on the keyboard at any point and write a bunch of gibberish (or at least more gibberish than you’re accustomed to from me).

Nothing quite like bonding with an older man during a murder case on an isolated island, is there? Nishinosono and Saikawa have been spending a lot of time together, and it looks like their relationship status is becoming ever more hazy as time goes by. I don’t know how much time they spent together before the murder case, but I’m guessing that even if Nishinosono went into his office everyday that she’s never had this many hours of consecutive one-on-one time with him. Of course, it’s not just seeing each other more often that’s bringing them closer, but the fact they have to work together in such extenuating circumstances. They have a stressful murder case to solve, and a lot of special memories are resurfacing as they try and do this.

If his shirts are this dumb, I wonder what his swimsuit looks like

I really liked seeing Nishinosono and Saikawa have their rooftop heart-to-heart. It had a very honest feeling of what would happen if two people were dragged into a mystery and had to just make do with what they had. The fact that they were up at an ungodly hour of the morning, Nishinosono’s makeshift towel cape and swimsuit, the heartfelt exchange of words despite all the stress of the murder…it all clicked for me as a perfectly imperfect moment.

The secret to the death of Nishinosono’s parents wasn’t as sinister as I thought it would be. It turns out they died in a plane crash and Nishinosono was so traumatized that she forgot all about it. It doesn’t seem to be all that connected to the case aside from the obvious imagery that’s in place to compare how similar Nishinosono and Dr. Magata are. Nonetheless, I found it interesting to hear her speak to Saikawa about something non-case-related and humbly thank him for everything he did. I suppose this is the reason she fell in love with him, yet couldn’t recall why she liked him in the first place – those memories were all locked up before now.

As for their relationship, it seems to be progressing, albeit at a snail’s pace. Nishinosono has always been very obvious about her feelings, but man, was she ever touchy this week! As for Saikawa, he’s still very much in denial of his feelings, so he tries to stop whenever he catches himself staring at Nishinosono too much. But he won’t stop Nishinosono when she’s in a clingy mood. He always seems to mention how brave Nishinosono is, and that almost seems like his way of getting her to forgive him for being such a coward and not acknowledging the most painfully obvious crush in the world. I’m hoping Saikawa finds his courage at some point to tell Nishinosono something…anything! Yes or no, I just want him to say something and face the problem head on. Although, admittedly, I can feel my emotions going from “oh nooo saikawa’s like the pedo uncle please don’t date her” to “awww what a cute couple, I hope it works out” almost against my will. They just have so much chemistry together!

The whole episode felt like a look into the insular world of Nishinosono and Saikawa. They are always together and everyone else doesn’t seem to matter to them, aside from Dr. Magata (who is dead and can’t really, like, hang out and stuff). Sometimes they talk to others to gather info, but really, they thrive in the company of each other the most. It especially felt intimate when they were huddled together in the dark after Red Magic was rebooted. Maybe it’s all because Saikawa was “in a good mood” but their interactions are really interesting when Saikawa isn’t making Nishinosono mad! The way he challenged her to try and see the path instead of randomly guessing solutions based on the kanji in names (haha…I’m totally…not guilty…of that….please don’t look back at my past post…) and to instead try and see “the path” was a very helpful way of phrasing it. Sometimes he comes off as dickish in the way he tries to explain things, so I thought it was nice he toned it down and Nishinosono took that challenge to heart.

So basically a pack of ostriches are the killer, right? CASE CLOSED.

The only problem with Nishinosono stopping Saikawa from telling us his critical findings in regards to the case is…NOW I DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER! I’m not the one going through some metamorphosis here, I just want you to tell me who the culprit is up front if you know it! That was a brutal cliffhanger for me because it’s basically saying that this technically shouldn’t be a cliffhanger if you’re smart enough to figure things out for yourself. It kind of forces you to be like Nishinosono and just work with the snippets Saikawa has told you and try and find your own “path.” It’s good that it’s so encouraging in that sense for those who want to solve the mystery themselves but I’m so stumped that this cliffhanger is remaining a true cliffhanger for me. But I feel like the answer is right there!

I feel it’s my duty as the one blogging this to at least take a wild stab of a guess at what’s happening.  Saikawa’s main train of thought seems to be that there’s something special about Dr. Magata’s gloves, and the difference between Dr. Magata and Miki. All I can think of is that you might wear gloves to murder someone and that maybe there’s another sibling we don’t know about.  Afterall, Saikawa tells Nishinosono “it wasn’t Dr. Magata you saw” so who was it? Miki looks too different from Dr. Magata to be a good body double so…who is this extra person? At the end, during the flashback, we see someone who looks like Dr. Magata ask Michiru (robot) to open the door…but her voice is not that of Dr. Magata. Since it’s in Japanese I can’t deny it might be Miki with longer hair, but I think it might be someone else because it sounds very deep. Could Dr. Magata actually be alive and this other person that Nishinosono met with is the one who was killed?

Anyways, that’s my 2 cents but I still feel very lost so I’m super curious to see what theories you guys come up with! Or maybe some of you have already solved it…

I think Dr. Mayata is engaging in smoke and mirrors. This is a stage show for a specific audience.

As for the ostriches? Wow, I have no clue. It’s a well circulated piece of crap “science” that they bury their heads in the sand. So perhaps it’s a sign to look beyond the BS and search for facts. As it stands, they’ve only seen clues in terms of bias, IOW it has to be a clue for a murder, when it could be a clue for something else.

Oh, and I love that sunrise. Most shows would underscore the hell out of it with massive amounts of music and edits that underline “important” parts of the dialog. They just let it be the awesome sunrise it’s supposed to be.

I’m trying to take in as much as I can…even the BS…because it’s better than me missing something entirely. I think I can relax about the ostriches though!

Yeah, it was a nice, quiet moment that was still gorgeous.

I don’t know why, but the ostriches made me think of the dancing ostriches from Fantasia. Maybe because so much of this show has been dancing around clues that would make the murderer obvious?

    • skylion says:

Ostriches….Fantasia….Dinosaurs…Meteorites! We have a murder weapon!

    • BlackBriar says:

Introducing something like ostriches this late in the series feels really out of place. Unless there’s some kind of relevancy, it kind of messes with the serious tone the show has set up.

      • skylion says:

He was having a vision/day dream that was illustrating a rather odd thought process. The ostriches are probably strongly connected to a specific memory he might be repressing; seriously most of these characters have massive amounts of mental repression.

      • Overcooled says:

The ostrich mafia is my new favourite character group though

In my opinion, it’s almost a certainty shutting Red Magic down will come back to bite some people. Obviously, it’s a big player in the scheme of things so I’m already sensing imminent drawback sooner than later. Hypothetically, I doubt it’s Yamane but the killer could be using him as an advantage to cover tracks. Red Magic probably caught something, even if it’s seemingly insignificant but will ultimately be irrelevant if the system with the evidence data is down.

If the ostrich sequence doesn’t throw people for a loop, nothing will. Seriously, the whole thing went over my head and I can’t begin to imagine how it fits in with anything. That aside, for deceased character, Shiki has a considerable amount of power and influence in the story. She’s not currently speaking but no doubt she’s leading everyone.

The uncle’s narrative made it profoundly clear what kind of person Shiki was. Wanting a world where she alone resides. She’s more extreme in her anti-socialism than Sakurako.

All I can think of is that you might wear gloves to murder someone and that maybe there’s another sibling we don’t know about. After all, Saikawa tells Nishinosono “it wasn’t Dr. Magata you saw” so who was it?

I had this theory in the earlier episodes. Quite possibly, there could be an illegitimate child. I mean, look at Shiki’s family and how renowned they are. It wouldn’t be the first time one or two members of an influential family decided to have an extramarital affair.

    • Overcooled says:

I was running out of room to start talking about Red Magic, but yes, that move really put me at unease. Red Magic doesn’t seem like the type of thing you can “just shut down.” Especially since it was made by a genius.

There was a snapshot moment of some pregnant-looking figure in the trippy ostrich sequence so maybe there is another Magata creeping around somewhere.

  4. Highway says:

I thought it was a little weird that after Saikawa and Nishinosono had the discussion about the lab people wanting to keep it quiet, and that it would be very difficult to get the police to agree to it, the first thing that Nishinosono does after they change the system is unilaterally call the cops and spill everything. Did I miss her and Saikawa agreeing that they would do that?

    • skylion says:

I just rewatched it early today, and yeah, that point is missing….

    • HannoX says:

Nishinosono may have just decided to do it on her own. She doesn’t strike me as the type to get permission from someone else before she does something.

      • Overcooled says:

I didn’t think much about it since Nishinosono tends to just do whatever she wants. But wow, I wonder how that’s going to turn out when the cops suddenly show up and no one else was expecting them…
