Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu – 06

Yuki-chan 6-4

Kyon’s Bizarre Adventure (and I even made a seiyuu joke there)

Well with both Valentines and White Day out of the picture, we can set our sights on anime spring…

Kyon doesn’t Stand a chance

Yuki-chan 6-3

I was going to say that Joseph never had days like these…

OK, I’m officially out of JoJokes, so let’s just carry on shall we? Things start of with something of a collection of whimpers. Kyon is lamenting the endless tyranny of high school tests, and Nagato is, by habit, so lost in thought she cannot recall the glory of Haruhi’s eminent arrival. But Koizumi stands tall; he of the carrying the dead weight for the Executive President in several ways this episode, but at least she’s happy, and he’s happy that she’s happy. It’s like the threat of Closed Space is still there. Tsuruya is up to old tricks, which leaves the final whimper belonging to the ever-so-Mikuru, who at least is getting over her shyness and is able to talk to at least Kyon without further ado.

Yuki-chan 6-2

SOS, Butt-Monkey A and Butt-Monkey B

Which is a celebrated high mark, as Mikuru’s first meeting with him was all but dignified. Well, it really was much more dignified than the rest of his meetings with her this series. A simple, yet accidental hand hold really shouldn’t be enough to test the poor girl, but test it does. As usual, Tsuruya is more than happy to play it up for the sake of mischief.

So with that now reaching the level of school hall legend, we move back to Kyon’s poor study habits. It’s as if the impact of study hasn’t made a Ripple in his pond (sorry, sorry, there was one more jojoke) For most of this section of the program Asakura is doing level best to play interference for Nagato, keeping them both in ignorance is the name of the game. This is all to cover up Yuki-chan’s rather weird visual learning skills. And she doesn’t want Yuki-chan to know that she knows, and she isn’t going to play it so that Kyon knows she knows. This includes an incredibly unfair clothing change; I wasn’t paying attention to much more after that the first time around. Damn girl, I’m liking your character more and more. But even Kyon’s mechanization’s to get her to improve her station with jealousy and pride ended up back-firing on her….she cries cute…

Yuki-chan 6-7

“I think of all the education that I missed/But then my homework was never quite like this”

You would like for things to proceed swimmingly from there, but there’s always room in the LitClub for the peanuts. So cue Haruhi. So I guess she’s a freaking genius in her school; but that’s hardly surprising considering it is a college prep institution. But even that isn’t any help for a young man that confuses these complex algebra questions for English questions. (I think it’s algebra…..I’m in the same boat as Kyon when it comes to maths) All those little letters. Guess he sucks in both subjects….

Yuki-chan 6-6

“S’cuse me, just in case you forgot about me!”

But the main thrust of the program comes in it’s final moments. I know that Asukara tries her best, but reading the room is just one of the skills she doesn’t possesses. It was a sweet scene with Kyon trying and succeeding to pull Yuki-chan out of her game brain, and it came with such pleasant benefits. There are a great many things that can come from manga, and the care and feeding of Nagato’s are one of them.

This is probably the best point to show this much advancement in the romance. It’s nice to see it come around the middle mark of the show. With a few surprises in store coming in rather short order, I’m glad to see they got this scene worked out. It was uncomplicated, and that spoke volumes. Just two people left to their own devices….with one bento between them…

This one was a great way to sum up where are characters have come from, and to put them all on the playing field at once. There’s been some advances here and there, but for all intents it was the passing of a pleasant April. But even with that, there is progress on the horizon. Haruhi cannot help but be herself, so there is one of her adventures to undertake. I really do hope it isn’t a film…..

Does Kyon’s scheme involve the LOLi in a bag?

    • skylion says:

Well, that was Kyon no Imouto’s scheme all along…and since that was part of the insipid Remote Island arc, I will say no more…

  2. HannoX says:

Poor Kyon, victim of a flying boob attack.

I lost it when Asakura changed into that outfit. I didn’t have a fetish for that yet but now I do. Why did you have to turn into an evil character in the main story and disappear. Show ▼

    • skylion says:

Ah, she was a deliciously evil character in the main story, and a great contrast to Yuki-chan in the film, as Kyon notes with a great deal of anger.

…and I’ve never never had that fetish myself, but she wears it well…

I really love the show like this. I love the emergence of Asakura as a major supporting character, one who is trying to help Yuki, but might be starting to realize that Yuki makes more progress with Kyon when she doesn’t get help. It even feels like they’ve settled Haruhi into that third wheel role, where she tries to make herself relevant but doesn’t really have the same kind of ‘in’ on Kyon that she did when she was in the same class that he was.

Koizumi feels really pathetic in this show. That person who tries to convince themselves that they’re happy just being close to the person they love, who just wants them to be happy. The most honest refutation of that is one of my favorite lines in anime songs, from sugar sweet nightmare. It’s so easy to say, so impossible to do.

Haruhi works great as a third wheel in this show. I’ve taken a few peeks into some of the un-animated LN storylines, and it’s actually something of a trend.

Koizumi is a walking suit, or the lame water carrier.

Asakuara’s role will change around a bit, here and there, and it’s something I’m looking forward to in the show.

It’s almost like the counterpoint to the Flanderization trope. From the perspective of someone like me, who isn’t a fan of Haruhi, you had a whole series where the wacky supporting character had free rein to run the show as the main character. Now with Yuki-chan, you have the series where they kept a lid on the wacky supporting character and handled her in a way that benefits the show. It’s like the reverse of how these spin-offs usually go.

        • skylion says:

If they put the full lid, or near that, on her, you’d get a Nerfed character. If they dropped her, it would almost betray the franchise. So they’ve been driving this other path rather well. She isn’t going to be the main wheel around which the plot runs, but her spin will have a gravity to it. It seems to be strong enough to snare Koizumi.

          • Highway says:

Koizumi being entranced by her is actually very believable for me. Without Kyon around to bear the full force of her personality, Koizumi would be the one who takes it, giving him much more of a chance to legitimately fall for her than he does when her main focus is Kyon and Koizumi can play the more detached observer who lets himself be pushed around.
