The General Gets his Due

YoruNoYatterman 9-01

That’s just to darn many big brothers (and sisters) watching…

I’m happy that this episode finally severed all the doubts about the connection between Goro and Alouette (and of course Dog). While this is very straightforward, I’m also happy that they’ve added in some rather sympathetic layers for both characters. It’s hard to be a villain, ever more so when you’ve got an evil antennae brain giving you sharp pokes in the noggin whenever you begin to recall your better past. Goro must have been one heck of an adversary to the Yatter back in the day for them to go to these lengths to yoke his strength for their own ends. How the end game plays out with this thread is going to be interesting. The Yatter’s have shown some genre savvy here and there, so are they aware of Goro’s eventual breaking of his conditioning? (cause you know that’s going to happen).

One of the things I forgot while watching the episode is that the Speed Racer franchise is owned by Tatsunoko Productions, so while it’s incredibly wild to see this sort of appearance, it’s not to far out of field (it also begs some very unfortunate questions in, is that the entire Racer family now evil robots or something even more sad and terrible?) So, never look a gift plot device in the mouth.

YoruNoYatterman 9-03

…no not that mouth…but beware it all the same…

It did take a double take from me as a viewer to get over this famous chimps name. For most of us outside Japan, he’s Chim-Chim, but now we get a proper re-introduction to Sanpee. At first on attack, this crazy chimp is soon put to rest by Alouette’s calming nature. With that we can get to the bulk of the episode which was a great day for Galina. One other idea we can put to rest is whether or not this young man will be taking up the mantle of hero in the near future. With his can-do attitude on full display, he is well on the road to that. In more ways that one. Heck, he’s off-road, showing us what being in the driver’s seat is very much about. He’s been training with both Boyaky and Tonzra all tis while and hasn’t given up yet. He’s probably been the most proactive, outside of Leopard, of the bunch. No wonder little Leopard has such a crush.

Yeah, but why did he have to rescue them in the first place?

Saving the Day, Advancing the Plot

YoruNoYatterman 9-06

Just a bit crispy….

Well, the gang got totted off to prision and Galina saved the day. One Elephantpaddywagon out of commission, several Yatterbots blown up, and a impenetrable prison penetrated and also blown up. Oh, and a pesky general out of their hair. Not bad, hero, not bad at all.

…one step closer to the final goal…

…well,this could use some work….

Wow, this show just continues to fire on all cylinders for me. It never forgets to have fun, and never forgets that there are few rules that it has to follow to get there. People dancing naked for pay? Got it! (?????) Crossover appearance by a popular franchise? You bet! Some nice and personal characterization to round out the viewing experience? Oh, they have that as well. If anything I hope they pay more attention to that. This story of family divided and perhaps brought back together is one worth perusing, and one I am anxious to watch unfold.

That was a pretty good episode. I was so not expecting to have cameos from the Mach 5 and Chim-Chim in this series!

So, does Speed Racer really share a universe with Yatterman? I shouldn’t be surprised since both of them are older style anime, but still! Also, did Speed, Spritle, and the family all die or get killed off by Yatterman and only Chim-Chim is left? That’s so sad. 🙁
He looks pretty old, hopefully he and the Mach 5 will have some good drives together. Though, I kind of hoped that they would do the classic theme song at least in the background, just having them there was awesome. Also, Galina’s “GoGoGo” line was classic.

Galina is shaping up to be a good Yatterman replacement. I’m thinking that Alouette will be too once she meets her dad again.

Poor Goro, he tries his best, but those pesky Dorombo gang just keeps messing him up. And now he’s been thrown in prison. His mechanized parts seem to shut down every time he tries to say his daughter’s name, and now he’s beginning to have flashbacks of her thanks to a skylark (her namesake). And my goodness, was that the result of him getting knocked into the sea, or did the Yatter lords do it, but he’s lost his entire bottom half! They mechanically bifurcated him! What did they do to Alouette’s dad? O_O

The Dorombo gang has finally found their way to the capital, but I’m guessing they’re going to have a lot more trouble with Lord and Lady Yatterman, and the 12 Yatter gods?! We have Yatter guardian gods now? How much government is in place here, really?

I kinda want more Speed Racer now….and more Gatchaman! I don’t think they share a universe, just the production studio…but that was true of both DC and Marvel comics many years ago.
Heck if we can get nearly every single character that appears in Dengeki Bunko manga/anime in a fighting game…

We’ve got three more episodes. That’s more than enough time to beat on 12 Yattergods…

I’m a big Speed Racer fan. I even liked the 2008 movie. I literally shouted out in surprise when Galina revealed the Mach 5. 😀

Hopefully they find Goro, I feel more sorry for him than really, any other character in this show. 🙁
But then, how will they recognize him? And how will they get him to remember?

        • skylion says:

…I think a little bird will tell them…

What was the movie like? I’ve never seen it myself and word has it the reviews weren’t in its favor despite the movie being helmed by the same group of people behind the Matrix trilogy.

This is no offense to anyone that liked it, but I found it to be not very watchable. I’m not a fan of the idea that everything needs to be live action; would have loved a nice anime film instead.

Words couldn’t be more true. That’s why after watching only the first 20 seconds of the trailer for that smoldering trash excuse of a Dragon Ball movie, I abandoned all hope then and there.

          • Irenesharda says:

It had a lot of bright colors and was quite convoluted, and I didn’t like the changes they made to Rex’s backstory, but to me, I enjoyed the races, I still got the same thrill of seeing Speed win, especially at the end. And the Speed Racer theme remix is still a guilty pleasure of mine.:)

Well, half your wish is coming true with another Gatchaman season titled “Gatchaman Crowds Insight” It’s just that a release date has yet to be announced.

Another fun episode. Boy, Goro is really hitting rock bottom. All his schemes keep getting thwarted. At least once I’d like to see what these Yatterman leaders he keeps talking about look like. Can’t really feel the gravity of his situation without how his superiors operate personally.

Here I thought last week’s episode was odd with a Yatterman version of the Loch Ness monster. How did the Mach 5 and Speed Racer’s chimpanzee manage to guest star here?

    • skylion says:

I think Goro’s connection to Ally is more than enough gravity at this point…

Well, like I said in a sly manner in one of my pic captions…Back Door Pilot? The Time Bokan/Yatterman franchise and Speed Racer share the same studio. They’ve already got Gatchaman up and running, maybe they want a modern day threepeat!

  3. Di Gi Kazune says:

The Wach 5… complete with monkey/ape. This reminds me of the Robot Chicken skit…

    Standard Robot Chicken disclaimers.

  4. MR.KLAC says:

look like goro has failed for that last time & cost him his legs yet everyone seeing ally cause him memory probs?

yet really the mach 5 & monkey also in same ep really got wonder how they appear in it (besides this not only time it happen before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3Og6RuaKo4 ya think?)

wonder if last few plans this next https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMJhf_4kGaE indeed permission to SQUEE?!

    • skylion says:

Those are two really good finds, thanks.

…makes me wish I would have taken the time to watch the New Yatterman!
