Time for Gundam Cross Fighters!

spring14-foshSunrise you are working hard this season with all these mechs and each of them are different! From dramatic and shocking world of Cross Ange to the mysterious world of Gundam G no Reconguista and wrapping it all up with the fun and comical world of Gundam Build Fighters TRY so ya Sunrise is giving us a bit of everything this season. So what is MechaNORN you ask? Well it is just like MetaFAP where we take similar anime themes and combine them into one post! Sounds like fun huh? Also in the video below you can use the time stamps to skip certain shows on this list if you are not interested in hearing about them, but I really hope you give them at  least a listen and maybe it will push you to try one of them or even all of them? Anyway thanks for listening and I hope you enjoy the video.

——————————

spring14-jrowSo yeah, Sunrise is bringing us 3 mecha series this season, and they are pretty different types of mech shows which at least adds variety and doesn’t create a feeling of needing to directly compare them to each other.

Cross Ange is becoming more like MetaRaep… Sunrise, WTF are you doing.

    • Foshizzel says:

Oooh they are indeed up to something! I guess Valvrape was inspirational to them huh or they wanted to do a yuri series and now they have a chance to do so? LOL

      • Irenesharda says:

Valrave was a masterpiece compared to Cross Ange….

        • Foshizzel says:

Ohhh? What would make Cross Ange better than Valvrave? A female version of L-elf or less emo stuff from Ange? I guess we won’t really know what is better till the end or midway point xD

  2. Kyokai says:

    MechaNORN, nice naming there! xD

  3. belatkuro says:

G-Reco is still pretty choppy. The scenes just jump around and don’t flow well together. And they’re jumping around too much from our MCs to different characters. While I don’t mind being told in different perspectives, this is just not working in here. Not to mention the quality of the show is pretty poor even if it’s going for an old school feel.
And is that a toilet inside the cockpit? Now I’ve seen everything. I’m not going to drop this but for a work by Tomino, it seems to be quite lacking at several things. Then again, the creator being involved doesn’t automatically mean that the show will be good.

GBF Try meanwhile had a great start. First things first: dat onee-san. It even comes with the Ara Ara factor of Endo Aya to voice her. I can already see the new fanarts and doujins, though most fanarts are focusing more on Fumina and her spats at the moment. Can’t blame them though 😛
And this just screams homage to Mobile Fighter G Gundam, which incidentally aired 20 years ago this year. Coupled with the start with Sekai and that picture, the Build Burning Gundam coming out of a mobile suit like the Master Gundam did, and that the BBG is similar to the Shining/God Gundam as a pure melee fighter. I heard that it wasn’t intentional that the BBG had the same name as the English dub name of the God Gundam which is Burning Gundam.
Love the big reveal of the BBG with how the new opening from Back-On was playing as the music. Gave me chills. And for a second Gundam show, this seems to have more budget than G-Reco. Baffling really.
One question that is lingering now is why did Sei place the BBG inside a Dom and placed that inside the trophy? He’s confirmed as the creator of that Gundam and even Ral knows about it. In any case, I’m totally hyped for this season and I hope we see some of the other characters. And I hope Fumina won’t be a dead weight later on as it’s a team fight.

Cross Ange. Not really sure about this show. Second episode was just all kinds of messed up. From the attempted rape to that ending. Guess some of the girls are disposable here so better not get attached to them. I do hear some good voices like Yukarin, KitaEri and Chihaya Minori. And did the management here seriously did not consider that Ange might make a run for it with her mech? That seems so silly for a place that’s so strict with rules. I do like how Ange/Nana Mizuki is making fun of the show in the preview.
At this point, I’m waiting for not-Kira Yamato to appear already to change things. I’m not much of a fan of an all-girl cast when it dials it up to this level.

    • Foshizzel says:

G-Reco: I agree that it is a bit choppy and all over the place with tons of stuff going on in the background at once and yeah it is cool seeing things from different perspectives.

LOL mecha toilet was funny and I hope things settle down for G-Reco cause I really want this Gundam to be a success.

GBF TRY: I had no idea you watched it! I wish more people would give it a shot because it really is a fun experience and yeah the doujin market for Gundam Build is CRAZY! Yeah there is tons or NSFW images of Fumina and I wonder what the creators think? I guess it might get people to watch their series? Now for the actual reveal of the BBG! That was AWESOME!

I guess Sei probably hid that suit for someone to find or it was a prototype? If anything I bet Yuuma will fix it up? I can’t wait to see more I am with you I am soooo damn hype for this second season!

Cross Ange: Yeah I guess sunrise wants to drill it into our heads that the world of Cross Ange is dark and terrible and in the end the girls are still living day to day in a giant prison so its not a great place to live and with there being only girls around each other you know what that means! Yuri, yuri and more yuri!

So yeah I can see why some would not want to watch this cause it can go from funny to OH MY GOD WTF did I just watch in a matter of minutes. I don’t want not-Kira appearing anytime soon! What do you thin his role will be anyway? Romantic partner for Ange or a rival type? Honestly I don’t know what to make of him just yet because all I know is he is in the OP and that is it.

    • Highway says:

Oh wait a second, I just read that Aya Endou is in Gundam Build Fighters? Uh oh, I might need to give that a try. 🙂

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

You are easily swayed… Even the combined pull of Nanoha and Kokonoe Rin hasn’t pulled me to cross ange yet.

      • Foshizzel says:

Hehehe yep she is in that as Sekai’s older sister so we might see her pop up here and there, but season one had a girl named China who didn’t do a whole lot of battling with the two main kids while this new season actually has an active female who wants to battle with the guys! I just don’t know if Aya Endou’s character will do much other than appear here and there?

I say give it a shot cause as Jrow said on our rec you don’t really need to see the first season to know whats up.

  4. Highway says:

Gundam G ep 3 has been sitting for half a week for me, and I’m not sure if I’ll ever watch it. It sounds from everyone that it just continues into “Nobody Knows What’s Going On!”

Cross Ange: I’m actually really liking this show. No, I don’t agree with forced sexual encounters. And usually I don’t care for characters who can’t get the reality of their situation through their thick skull, but for some reason I am buying it with Angelise. The escape attempt was at once predictable and unexpected, since Ange had shown such aptitude for flying, and apparent joy at the flight training, even while she rebelled against every other aspect of the prison/not prison. Plus I’m also guessing that there’s nowhere to go with that prison way far away from everywhere else populated (although why would the DRAGONs show up there?). So escape really isn’t an option, but it’s still something she had to try.

Coco had a death flag over her from moment 1, and who knows if Ange will take anything from her death. She was contemptuous of Coco, but Coco was still the only person who had connected with her. Something’s gotta get her out of Princess Mode eventually.

    • Foshizzel says:

Gundam G: Yeah it is taking a while to get going so I could see people dropping it now, but at least you gave it a shot~

Cross Ange: Ohhh? I am surprised you are still watching it and agreed the sexual encounters are a bit much, but given that it is still a prison I guess things are bound to happen! Also agreed I think the main prison base thing is probably in the middle of the ocean somewhere to prevent the girls from simply leaving. As for the DRAGON portals opening in that area I don’t know why either I guess they might explain things later?

Yep RIP COCO! We barely got to know you…

      • Highway says:

I don’t think the sexual encounters are out of character or out of place at all, actually. I was just trying to say that I don’t condone prison rape, while understanding that it happens (and should probably be stopped as much as possible). I actually really like Cross Ange, and find it an interesting show.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

        Poor Pico and Chico…

Also, trying to refrain from the Arsenal jokes after this.

  5. Highway says:

Oh, and I think Ange can be forgiven for not knowing how to put on that flight suit outfit whatsamawhozit. How could anyone put that thing on? Usually things have zippers or buttons or clasps or something.

  6. Rathje says:

Yeah… seriously… what the hell was with the jaguar and the snake?

Is this just a Gundam thing or something?

    • Foshizzel says:

I do recall some animals being more “animated” than others in some of the older Gundam series, but yeaahhh it was kinda weird…

  7. skylion says:

Cross Ange: Actually picked itself up for me. I can sense a fairly strong arc building up in the characters, and Ange’s arrival can galvanize them even more. Shame about Coco…but that was an immediate death flag. Only real negative? the DRAGON acronym. WTF?

Gundam G: Big pile of nope. and Klem Nick is a dick to jungle animals. Anime Sins +1

    • Highway says:

I’m convinced the DRAGON acronym is solely a device to call them “dragons” instead of something else. I liked how the advanced society used English. 🙂

    • Foshizzel says:

Cross Ange: I like that it is getting better and they are certainly pros at OH MY GOD WHAT? reactions at least from myself I already figured Coco was gonna get owned because the world of Cross Ange is dark and messed up so its sort of impossible to be “happy” especially in a prison set up or did Coco just accept her fate and adapted quicker than Ange? Course we will never know.

Gundam G: Lol those animals made me laugh! Poor things…

      • Highway says:

I think that Coco had been at the Arzenal for years. We have to remember that Angelise is a very special case: usually the normas are identified as babies and taken there and raised as normas, told how defective and awful they are. Ange was raised as a mana user (even though she never did) and was inculcated with the values from the other side. Then to be told that she is the thing that she holds in contempt, and have her whole life be turned upside down is what she’s fighting now.

        • Foshizzel says:

Ahhh yeah that is true some of them were probably just raised at the prison so they have no idea about the outside world I guess that works! I guess it might be revealed later that Julio payed them off to take Ange away or something like that?

  8. Highway says:

Another thought on Cross Ange that I started with last week. The Shin Sekai Yori compare / contrast is something that I’m very interested in. I think it’s actually pretty funny that the despised “Normas” are the ones who can’t 1) magic doors open, 2) float their briefcase alongside, 3) float cars along. Not that any of these things keeps human beings in our world from being able to operate just fine (hey look, my door has a knob and hinges!). As is amply proved by Angelise’s presence, being a Norma doesn’t make you a monster, it doesn’t even make you unable to function.

The entirety of the paranoia against Normas seems to be because they can not be caged like the rest of society. I’m sure this is going to be some big allegorical thing, and I sure don’t give Sunrise enough credit to think that they’ll handle it with anything in the same hemisphere as subtlety, but so far it hasn’t really been rammed down our throat, just an interesting subtext that’s present.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I can totally see that on the Norma vs mana users and I don’t think Ange ever was a mana user I think she was always a Norma and she always had her maid by her side to do the mana stuff for her at least that is what I think anyway…

Well Sunrise can dive into those subjects if they try I mean Valvrave had the space vamps vs humans even though I know that was only a handful of vamps not an entire race, but Gundam plays with the idea of newtypes which are basically super humans who can in a way predict the future during combat giving them an edge vs average humans or they play with racism aka space people vs earth people…so they have a chance to do something even though I won’t hold my breath.

      • Highway says:

She was raised as a mana user, even though she never did. So she doesn’t know any differently. I thought that Valvrave didn’t try and make any points or explore any morality. It just had Haruto angsting about “onoz, I’m not a human any more”. It didn’t go any farther than that.

        • Foshizzel says:

Hahah ya well with Valvrave I took it as Sunrise experimenting with a new mecha? Lately I feel that they are desperately looking for the next big hit series outside of Gundam so they use the new formula of Mecha + insert supernatural or scifi theme here = WOOT NEW MECHA! Cause Valvrave is mecha+Vampires and Buddy Complex is mecha+Timetravel and Cross Ange is mecha+magic+dragons I just want to see at least one of these non-Gundams take off and become a hit…

  9. Irenesharda says:

    Review for Cross Ange:

I was interested in this show, since French is my second language and any anime with a French in the title draws me. However, I’m beginning to feel this was a huge mistake. 🙁

Well, that’s one, two…two strikes so far.

I don’t care for yuri, fanservice, titillation, or any such thing, and I didn’t really come to this series for that. If this is just going to be “let’s abuse Ange for weeks until one day she miraculously becomes a badass”, then I’m sorry, I’m just going to have to let this one go.
Valvrave and Aldnoah were masterpieces in comparison to this.

Is this really going to be attempted rape ever week? You guys do know that it’s already lost it’s shock value right?

I also liked Ange in the beginning, sure she had a wrong view of Norma, but other than that, she was nice and kind and had an attitude that suited her station and class. I can understand that she’s suffered a large change after having lost everything and had to adjust. However, now they seem to just want to make her suddenly really unlikable, which wasn’t really how she was in the last episode, I’m guessing they want to do that so it will be “okay” for her to be abused and attacked and turned into some revenge-cold woman that can fight.

This series struck out twice. Three times, and you’re out.

    For Gundam G no Reconguista:

Well, this one was a lot more lighthearted and slapstick, mixed in with some serious moments. I’m liking Bellri and Aida more and more, and even Monday got to say more words.

However, Klim Nick stole the show this episode, and I love his maverick style. I thought Bellri going over to the pirates side would be more defining and not so…accidental. This episode wasn’t as strong as the last one, but we got a ways to go in this series so, lets see where it takes us.

However, the toilet humor (pun intended ) was kind of weird….

The way I’m understanding the situation is that there is some kind of monopoly on energy by the Capital, and Ameria wants to break that monopoly so that everyone can have energy. The space pirates are kind of working as privateers under the Amerians and Aida is like their icon/leader. I don’t think she’s Amerian herself, but she might just be some lost princess or something. And no one seems to know where Raraiya came from so that’s interesting…

    • Foshizzel says:

let’s abuse Ange for weeks until one day she miraculously becomes a badass

Yeah I can see that but what else are they spose to do with Ange? Leave her alone and treat her differently? I think ALL of the girls have gone through the same thing Ange went through, but not all of them are resisting as much as she does. Yeah it is dumb to see Ange get abused and mind screwed in the first two episodes, but I see it as “rough training” to get her used to her new prison life and we have to remember it is still a prison which is not meant to be a vacation spot

I can agree that the attempted rape does get a bit old after a while, but it is still shocking! I mean AoT has people being eaten over and over and over again but it never got less shocking with each death because it was still OH MY GOD worthy at least to me; however I can see some people not finding it shocking anymore after the first time seeing it happen.

Oh so you are giving it one more episode or one more strike before you drop? I can’t force people to stick around, but I think it will get better and hopefully soon it will focus on the other stuff besides abusing Ange every other week.

Gundam G: Bellri and Aida are a great pair and LOL the toiler human was a bit out there that is true! As for the situation yeah it sounds like energy is part of the overall plot of this gundam. Ahhh yeah Aida being an Amerian princess? I didn’t even think about that and yeah that could also work and what about bellri? Is he a prince or sibling to Aida? I mean both had matching necklace charms so there is some important connection between them.

And once she has finally embraced her Dark Side(tm), she will become the most powerful being and have her revenge!

Seriously though, this is the sort of treatment you see in H-doujinshi and extreme eroge. Might as well repeatedly gangraep her until she minbreaks… and becomes a breeder… oh god… this is reminding me of the series ‘idol decay’. DO NOT TOUCH IT OR ANYTHING BY THE AUTHOR. Your mind will never be the same again. You have been warned.

Titans eats hunams. The pain and suffering ends on cessation of vital functions. RaepAnge OTOH, the pain and suffering continues. I would consider the titans to be the more merciful option.
