Welcome to college life.
My place is pretty simple, as you might expect. It’s just a single-bedroom apartment for your typical college student. It might also be obvious from the images that I moved in not too long ago, because the place is still unreasonably neat. Don’t worry, I fully expect it to get much messier in the future. As far as my setup goes, I just have a single 23-inch IPS monitor and the world’s shittiest speakers hooked up to my desktop. Yup, no TV. I don’t watch TV. Haven’t done that in many years now. And I find it excessive to buy a TV just to hook it up to my desktop. So there’s that.

Laptop desktop. Wait, what?
Besides my desktop, I also have a laptop which I bring with me everywhere. It practically lives in my backpack. Interesting tidbit: it’s a touchscreen laptop because of Windows 8. And let me tell you, a touchscreen does not work very well with a standard, non-convertible laptop. The screen just kind of wobbles when you tap it, so you need to use your hand (or something else) to stabilize the thing. Not exactly useful. Anyway, I don’t really watch anime or read manga on the run because I’m busy working on other things when I’m not at my place. So I only use my laptop for work.

As far as bling goes, I have absolutely no merchandise except for a single folder depicting the lovely young ladies of Prisma Illya. And even that was given to me by a former roommate (he goes to Japan every now and then). I guess I don’t really have anything because I don’t go to conventions and don’t have a particular interest in figures and such. I do hope to one day start purchasing disc sets for shows I enjoy though. That way I can properly support the industry. But for now, I don’t yet have a technically stable (and large enough) source of income as a college student, so that will have to wait.

With all that out of the way, I’ll just briefly go over my aniblogging habits. The process is fairly straight forward. I read or watch the material in question. Then I collect my thoughts for a moment before proceeding to spew them all over the post editor WYSIWYG style. Sometimes I might even proof-read what I’ve written! Just kidding, I do that in between paragraphs as I write. But even so some mistakes tend to slip through as I’m editing the post. So here’s something you might or might not have noticed: I come back to my posts after some time (maybe a day or two) and read them over with a fresh mindset. Doing that, I catch most of those goof-ups that slipped through and edit the post accordingly. Yes, that’s right. I do modify my posts as necessary even after publication. Not that any of you really have the need to read my writing more than once, so I highly doubt anyone has noticed. Oh, and I forgot to mention that the screenshots are taken and inserted into the post after all the text is written. So that means I take a second pass through the content (I watch episodes again in 4x speed to hilarious effect) each time I write a post.

Since 2012, I’ve retired from aniblogging and much prefer to mini-talk episodes on a weekly basis. My method stays the same as it has been with recording, but I think I’ve done well to keep ‘Verse and the mini-talks going this year. Typing words and adding the pics and making sure everything was perfect was such a timesuck mentally on me knowing it never could be; I feel much more at ease editing audio and having a conversation with Fosh and the others about anime. I dunno what this reading/watching step Sumairii’s talking about is…

An anime-merch packed podcast HQ table
Having lived here for over 2 years, I rearranged furniture sometime ago to keep things fresh. The benefit is having my consoles wired for better quality connection, more middle space and better acoustics for Anivision as that podcast is done more frequently in my abode. What’s pretty neat about my setup is a couple similarities there are between then and now. My wallpaper is Luffy in the same pose, just pre vs. post timeskip (2 years have passed, how perfect is that?), and while the Infamous Second Son box isn’t really viewable in this year’s shot, it’s there to go along with Infamous 2 that can be more clearly seen on my table 2 years ago. Also, I’m in the current gen with both the PS4 & Xbox One. Off in the distance is Akira Yamamoto, who played Best Girl in 2199.

Come inside Highway’s office, and meet Merry the cat!
Hey there everyone! I’m happy that I get the chance to do a habitat post, as the original one was right after I started coming to Metanorn, and it looked really cool to see the environments that everyone else inhabits. Of course, my desk is all boring to me, but there are some things I really like about it, the first one being the whole desk. I don’t know if anyone else here knows about them, but the original Ikea Jerker modular desk is one of, if not the singular best computer desk that has ever been sold. It’s big, open, sturdy, very space efficient, and has lasted me through 6 different computers. The speakers are AudioEngine A5’s, which sound great, and the trackball is another one of the best, a Microsoft Trackball Optical. There’s some fun stuff up there, too, like the Ferrari Enzo, the Galileo Thermometer, although I never use the little fake flamey lamp. The two bears are souvenirs from NYC, representing the 1 Train and the E Train subways.

The TV with the lights on…
And how I’m usually watching.
When I’m watching anime, I usually turn around from the desk, and watch on the TV, which is another monitor for my computer. I just drag the show I’m watching, whether in a browser window or in an MPC window, over onto this screen, and make it full screen. The light that you see behind the TV is a UBS bias light strip, which is a really great idea (bias lighting is good for watching TV, you don’t want to watch in a completely dark room), plugs into the TV’s USB port, and sticks across the back, nice 25 dollar upgrade.
The only anime merchandise I have right now (besides a few DVDs and BDs like Girls und Panzer) is Maou and Tohka here. I do have a couple more nendoroids on the way, tho, Tsubasa Hanekawa and Miss Monochrome. They’ll be here in half a year… Anyway, I don’t buy the other non-nendoroid figurines, because they’re a little too inappropriate, generally, and a lot too expensive (but that Akeno Himejima bunny girl? Yowza!).
That’s all I’ve got for my aniblogging habitat, and I’ll be happy to answer any questions, too! And before I go, here’s a close up of Tohka and Maou, so you can laugh at my bad posing skillz!

…We’ll get to a picture of my actual set up later (the image is an odd size). Anyways, the only real change to my aniblogging habitat is that I’ve taken out my desk in favour of more book shelves, so now my desk is a chair. …Or the floor. So instead, I figure that I’ll use this space to show off my figure collection. There’s a shop near(ish) my house that exclusively sells gundam model kits and anime figures, which has resulted in a lot of poor life choices on my part. But hey, now I get to explain to every new person who comes over why I have an assortment of anime women displayed proudly on shelves. …There would totally be more anime men too, if I could find any I liked. I already have vague plans to maul anyone who stands between me and Gil when they get him in stock.

…I apologize for the picture quality. I don’t own a camera and the one on my phone is terrible. Oh, and I’m totally open to questions about characters and whatnot! I love talking about my collection (as you’ll see for yourself shortly). I mostly collect Figma or Nendoroids, though I do have other types. I’m also (sort of) proud to say that all of my Nendoroid petites were bought blindly (as in, I bought random boxes, since they’re packaged so that you don’t know what’s inside until you open them). I did extremely well in not getting any repeats, minus one extra Homura.
Shinku is nice, but Alice (the most adorable thing ever) is probably the second favourite Nendoroid of my collection.
Itoshiki-sensei only wins over her because he came with his own noose (…and maybe also because, Kamiyan).
It may be hard to tell, but I like Vocaloid.
The original BRS figma are actually so hard to pose nicely. Black Gold Saw’s proportions always look off. OTL
Finally, my “desk”
Nothing has really changed about my post writing either (watch anime, write about it, maybe watch again a second time to see if I missed anything or as a refresher if I left things sitting for a couple of days, screencap, and then I’m done). For my otome game posts though, I FINALLY worked out a system. I’ve learned that the best way to get things done is to type events out as soon as I play them. A jot note, the start of a sentence, or anything really, as long as I think it will help me remember what happened …Which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t (my usual time for playing is like 12-2 am for me, so hell if I’m awake enough to know what I’m doing), but at least I have the order of events, for the most part. Though I’m still working on figuring things out fully. This really works well with PC games, but it’s a lot harder to write things down when playing PSP since it’s obviously not always on the chair. At the kitchen table…
Well, it ain’t much now is it? I’m sorry that I cannot reveal wall after wall of Shinobu Oshino posters, nor shelves of tchotchkes to dazzle the eye. I like to keep home fair simple. Just like any other modern nerd, multiple platforms is where it is at. Yes, that is a Nexus 7 tablet with Bluetooth keyboard right next to a Chromebook. I like to keep my options open. Actually the tablet is for Skype, as the CB just will not play well with that app. The Chromebook is where I have done a ton of writing as of late, for Metanorn, for pleasure, for other work, and for even more work. It’s incredibly portable, and makes it easy to write just about anywhere (even offline). You’ll notice that I don’t have an official computer desk. I love keeping things portable…so much that I haven’t had a proper case based computer for at least five or six years. For the keen eye and mind, can you spot the skylion in one of those pics?! I do love using the tablet to watch anime on the bus ride home from the day job. Yes, sometimes I get the looks! “You watchin’ porn?” LOL. The living room laptop is the official media center computer, and that’s been the set up since I moved in December of 2012. Before that…..just on a laptop.

I work part time as a ad copy writer, with some corporate business/technical writing here and there. I do this freelance, and am usually part of a team if the project is large enough, and the payout is worth it. The process is pretty simple. I get specs from a team leader, that they get through a client. TLDR. I get an assignment and have to do some research. Then I have to work to client needs and make a word count work. Aniblogging is no different. Assignment? Cool. One of my anime is on right now! I can’t wait to watch it! The rest is what you see under my handle. And you know what? It is ten times more awesome than that other stuff. Holy Crap, the other stuff can get boring. Copypasta large blocks of text, cut whole paragraphs, insert my own text based on client specs. Lather, rinse, repeat and hope your client isn’t basically a team of too many ladles in the soup. At Metanorn I have freedom to express myself. And since I am also trying to break out creatively, that means so much to me.
It gives me great pleasure to be part of this, the Sixth Year Anniversary. Truth be told, I’ve been wanting to write for this site since I discovered it. But I always feared that I would commit, and not deliver. So, better now, than never. Doing this is a treat. So anyone that reads my posts, keep in mind, I like to basically be the first among equals as a commenter. I just happen to be an insane writer this time around. I enjoy engaging with anyone that drops my posts a line. So please, feel free to drop by and engage. I’ve been lucky to have made some great friends, and hope to make more.

~Since the last aniblogging habitat post, my siblings have turned into pushy teenagers demanding more use of our massive desktop computer, which is coincidentally located on my desk in my room. So, my trusty laptop and I have been effectively pushed to the dining room table, which is where I’ve been doing all of my aniblogging and other computer shenanigans for the past two years. It’s not too bad (I am close to the kitchen after all, heh), but of course I can’t blast my music or yell at my screen while watching anime and the like; not to mention I’m pretty susceptible to my mother’s curious eyes (which, while I’m on tumblr, I definitely don’t want). Even though I’m the oldest, I can’t win over these scary teenagers…

My actual desk, which hasn’t changed much from the last time, except for some new knick-knacks
Anyway, while my habitat has changed, my aniblogging habits necessarily haven’t. I will shamefully admit that I am a procrastinator extraordinaire (but hey, how many writers aren’t?), so usually it takes me a day or two to watch an episode of a series, especially if it’s one I expect to be super dramatic or if school assignments do need my immediate attention. Once I do push myself and start watching whatever series I’m blogging about, I almost always take notes on a document, writing down both dumb comments and some observations to keep in mind. Afterward, I like to walk around my house to collect some more thoughts; I guess letting the episode(s) I’ve watched soak in my brain for a bit. It’s then I usually watch the episode a second time, looking for things I might have missed as well as capturing some screencaps. And then it’s the day or two long process of writing where I battle with myself on whether what I’m writing makes any sense or if my sentences are turning into massive clumps. I’m definitely a person who gets overly self-conscious about their writing, especially whenever I’m writing about a series with a decent amount of attention on it. It’s a habit I’m definitely trying to work on breaking. However, once I get passed all my doubts, I put a post together and click that post button! And there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing that I’ve finished and published a post.~

I’m still in the middle of a move so I have no way of showing off my beautiful merchandise prettily. But some of it I exclusively unpacked for you all to gloat over. No surprises on the fact that most of them are Type-Moon related but hey, you should have known that already. From the last time I contributed for the habitat post, nothing much has changed except for addition of a few accessories and figures. I NEEED an extended monitor for home but I am curbing my urges for buying things until my next move. I’m showcasing both my home and work space because I multi-task and Metanorn is always open on one tab. I shudder to think what would happen to our spam if I didn’t clean it on hourly basis. The accumulation might reach more than thousand within a few hours.

I have been recently struggling with striking a balance between aniblogging, work and RL but I have been managing as I love Metanorn and its amazing community. Getting into the thick of things, even when I do have a designated table, my favourite way of aniblogging is lying around my bed or my friendly settee. You can’t call me a slob because hell, my RL job is related to digital production so when you spend more than half a day on a desk job, you’d experiment other ways yourself and they are called laptops for a reason.
Anyways, I can zip up a post within hours if I work on it in one go; however, mostly my usual MO is watching the relevant episode, then rewatching for screenshots and then writing my thoughts, which are typed in one or two turns. I usually follow this routine for solo blogging, while for tag-teaming, I interact with meta members for a consolidated effort on outline and things we will cover per episode. However, if I’m blogging something related to the titles I love, I put extra effort of reading source material and cover both than just one. I continue experimenting with my writing style to see what can work. Recently, I haven’t been able to read other aniblogs but sporadically I do. Sometimes I wonder about the many post ideas that are still brewing in the back-burner; I just hope they see the light of day sooner than later. Now time to show my stash:

Some of my manga volumes along with animanga sundry from smashcon are resting with Mr. Kyo along with this Kick-heart poster currently. Usually my collection drastically increases after I visit a convention but not sure which is going to be next but one of my ultimate wish is possessing the BDs of Kara no Kyoukai. Yep, this I will get soon enough.
In terms of my involvement with fandom, it has definitely broadened by interacting with our readers and other anibloggers on twitter and Facebook. I live-tweet about some of the animanga I watch/read depending on excitement factor, while our team skype room is always lively with discussion, even when most of us live in different time zones. I think our overall contribution motivation comes from the lively collective discussion; therefore, I can’t thank our regulars and community enough for keeping Metanorn lively as ever.

I find that the TV does upscaling much better than my computer monitor. It’s also just more comfortable to watch, even though for me, the sound is stereo reversed (because a. the TV speakers suck and b. changing it around is a hassle and a half).
There are people who game on laptops. I personally don’t care for the ergonomics of laptops at all. I tried one for part of my job, and found that it was just a nightmare for using. You have to basically look at your hands to see the screen, the pointing device is bleh, you need to put it on a table and it’s rare to have that where you can use it well. I’d rather have a nice well-laid-out desktop system, even if I need to dedicate space to it.

…for instance. This past Thursday, I got out of my day job super early. I checked all my professional and friendly emails while waiting for my bus. I can sit down at my pub and do that for twenty or so minutes. Also check my social media, facebook, G+, twitter, Metanorn comments. But I do get a feed from a client more often than not. At the bus stop and on the bus, I can create a rough outline of any specs I have to develop later. So when I get home, it’s a quick dinner, and then I have my work clearly laid out in front of me. Get that done, and I can tackle WIXOSS for about 90 or so minutes.

Let’s see… I think this would be the most appropriate subthread to reply to…
Actually gaming on a laptop isn’t so much of key placement but the *combined function keys* format. If you plug in a proper fullsized keyboard, it wouldn’t but an issue. Touchpads can be replaced with a mouse.
My solution: one as the internet gateway/irc/workdesktop, one to game/watch anipr0n and the tabletpc for mobility. There’s another laptop that was formerly the old mobile workstation. All connected in a hideous network config. And the two desktops are connected in a way either can use both monitors if needed.
I prefer desktops as you can replace bits as needed especially hard disks. And I don’t work in an IT related field. 😉

This might not the best answer since I don’t consider myself a portable lover, but I just don’t game on portable platforms like my laptop or my smartphone. I like to keep myself focused and when I’m not at home I’m either learning or working, so I avoid distractions that way.
When I’m at my desktop at home it’s a different story though. Planetside 2 for days!

I’ve always been the sort that wants to play a game for maybe a half hour or so. It burns off some steam, and then I have to go do something else. Paint a fence, read a book, etc. So modern gaming leaves me a bit cold in that I have to Jumping Puzzle the Tutorial all the time. My two favorite games over the years were Portal and Settlers of Cataan on the XBOX arcade.
So yeah, me and gaming aren’t the best of friends. But, get me a room with boardgame enthusiasts or TRPG players….I’m good to go….

A blast from the past. I didn’t think this kind of post would be revived. Now we get a good look at the fresh meat and the not so fresh meat’s place of business.
Sumairii’s place is pretty spacey and yeah, you can tell the apartment’s recently inhabited. I guess it isn’t quite “Home, sweet home” yet and I can kind of relate to the no TV thing. During my two years abroad for studies, I had a TV but only used it to connect my dvd player since there were no channels.
@Jrow: Am I seeing things or is it really that you have a PS3 on one end and a PS4 on the other end of your TV stand? And is that an Xbox 360 and Xbox One beneath them? If so, I envy your good fortune.
We more or less have same idea, Highway. Though the methods differ. For me, I’d download a new episode of a series I’m watching, copy it onto a flash drive and watch it on TV through my PS3. It gives you that actual TV show feel.
@Karakuri: Nice figurines. I mostly liked those of the BRS universe and that stand alone Saya Kisaragi figure from Blood-C. More book hunting. Any luck finding more of those Lovephobia volumes you were hunting down for some time? You mentioned having a PSP. You wouldn’t happen to have a PSN account? Mine’s BlackBriar105.

It sucks getting what you want so late. In my case, finally obtaining a PS3 on Christmas 2012 only to find out the PS4 was right around the corner in less than a year’s time. I felt so bummed after hearing the news but I am making use of what have now playing whatever games are in arm’s reach and eventually there’ll be a PS4 Slim. So I’ll wait and make my plans in the meantime.

But when you think about it, there was ample time to get one. Just that finances wouldn’t allow it at the moment. Because the PS3 was released November 2006 and the PS4 in November 2013. That’s a seven year time gap.

Hahaha!! Beat you to it. Nice Hyperdimension Neptunia avatar. Among Sony’s current merchandise, I only have a PSP and PS3. The only game I’ve been playing recently is Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, clearing the side missions. So far in entirety, I’ve only 94% completion of the game.

I once had a foolish dream of buying all of the BRS figma. …I’ve long since given up on it though (mostly because the first versions are a pain to figure out what to do with).
Yeah! I bought 1+2 of Lovephobia! It’s a good series so far (it has Bloody Cross-ish level darkness, though the plots aren’t too similar). I’m just waiting on the last volume to come out. The publisher delayed a ton of their titles, so the last I checked, volume 3 is currently sitting at “December 31, 2014” …Though that’s probably just a placeholder date.

Primary Desktop
It’s still pretty much the same, but I’ve upgraded my speakers to a bigger and badder sound system, and overhauled my main desktop (with a new case and so many awesome fans (10)), just waiting for Dragon Age: Inquisition to come out and in goes a mid-high range GPU (I’m using my music desktop in my room to write this post, it’s wired to speakers in my bathroom – it’s pretty awesome to jam to music as I’m getting ready or showering).
In terms of loot, I only have this. If you look really closely, the middle shelf on the left bookshelf towards the middle, there are some artbooks ~
(o´･_･)っ. I’m slowly building up my collection, T2, Kishida Meru, and some game artbooks (FF, Valkryia Chronicles, and a couple others). Next on my list, TTGL. Oh, and I have all the wanted posters around my room

@Sumairii: That’s a pretty decent sized apartment. Where I am, you’re lucky to get 400-500 s.f. for $1,500/mth. Newer places around 600-700 s.f. go for $2,000/mth >.< You have so much empty space!!! You need a beanbag couch. Or a kotatsu! Yes, the latter sounds really good.
And yes, a post editor would be awesome. Though I lurk more often than not so my opinion doesn't count for much.

Re: Figurines, unless you are a maniac and loaded, it usually ends up as buying (after finding), i) a character in a series that you really like and ii) a character in a pose/sculpted in a nice way. The first sometimes is not as easy if your character isn’t one of commonly wanted top tiers. The second sometimes doesn’t happen. I’ve seen a few shana figures but none in a nice enough pose to justify. Shiro on the otherhand will hopefully arrive in October.
As for my prized figure: Di Gi Charat 5th Anniversary Doll. Still in her box.

Like I said, I generally don’t get regular figures because the poses are not particularly appropriate, either for my house or for the character. Plus, the faces generally look iffy, and they’re really expensive. That’s why I go for the nendoroids: cheaper, posable, representative of the character in the show.

Most of the nendoroids I see are in the 30-40 dollar range (Shinku was 50, that’s part of why I passed on her). I’ve never seen a figma or other more realistic figure for less than 70 dollars, and frequently see them up over 100.
