Meganebu! – 03

He’s the ghost of glasses past.

Three episodes in, and I regret nothing. Though maybe my biggest problem with this episode is the clock thing is the fact that Koichi ever borrowed the sunglasses in the first place. Wearing sunglasses over regular glasses is extremely uncomfortable. I can’t imagine anyone ever subjecting themselves to this on purpose and seemed too unrealistic. Because this anime is all about realism.

Well, at least the show is staying true to what it set out there before. Yes, change all of the clocks to run faster and hope no one notices. Or maybe that’s the beauty of the plan. It’s so convoluted and needs more effort than it’s worth to pull off, so no one would ever suspect it. But…. by the time the school started, wouldn’t the clocks be way off anyways? 5 minutes builds up and in just 4 hours, the clocks would be off by 20 minutes. That’s a rather noticeable amount of time. And wouldn’t someone notice that the first class didn’t start on the right time in the first place? Or maybe the clocks are all made to just cut off the last 5 minutes of a period (?). Even though they never stated this and the teacher’s watches were all on the hour (albeit an hour late) when it hit 11 am, for whatever reason. And I’m no expert in how schools set the bells to ring between periods, but isn’t the bell on a separate automated (or at least my high school’s bell thing was automated) system? Why would changing the wall clock change what time the bells ring? MAN, THIS SHOW IS DEEP.

It should be pretty obvious that these are a new and improved version. They have a visor. The last ones didn’t have a visor.

…And don’t even get me started on how making a magical clock somehow improves the X-ray glasses (that they’ve already successfully made once). …Or the kanji switching. Though the appearance of the ghost was an interesting enough twist, considering that this is a show about glasses and not much else. Sure, Koichi was heavily involved with glasses as well, but it made the second half of the episode interesting where the first half just about killed me with the sheer lack of common sense. …Not that this show has much to do with common sense in the first place, but this was worse than usual.

So yeah, back to Koichi, his appearance made things more interesting. How he got hit in the middle of an entirely empty street is beyond me (by one of the only two trucks that this town seems to have, no less), but maybe it has to do with his poor eyesight. …And maybe this should be taken as a life lesson not to mess around on the highway (whether it’s deserted or not). Though that’s not to say that they pulled the sad mood that they were going for  very well. It wasn’t even the meganebu’s antics that killed the mood of the tragic buildup and touching goodbye scene, it was the overhanging fact that this show somehow managed to relate this entire ordeal back to glasses. Of course, if it wasn’t about glasses I doubt the meganebu would have bothered with this at all in the first place. However, the fact that this entire world runs on the logic that megane are the centre of the universe is kind of amazing in a way.

OF COURSE Akira sleeps and bathes with his glasses on.

I think the background music just levelled up. The “sugei sugei glasses~ oooooh~” song was probably my favourite thing from the episode and possibly the entire season, even though the entire season hasn’t even aired yet. …Or maybe it was the combination of the song with how unimpressed Akira looked in comparison. Though that’s not the only thing they levelled up. The BL vibes from this episode were so strong, they hurt. Mitsuki wanting to be exposed is one thing, but that was one overly friendly ghost as well. …There’s not much to say about that really, aside from the fact that Akira seems shippable with every person on the show. 

There was no real place to put this above, but damn, the night sky looked really nice this episode. The animation still isn’t anything to rave about (and it never will be), but the director is making brilliant use of the budget. There was an actual plot to this episode as well! And it tied everything that happened together instead of having everything disorganized like the events normally are! Amazing! …And maybe this says something about my sense of humour (though maybe that should be apparent from some of my past blogging), but there were some genuinely funny moments this episode. Though whether or not they were supposed to be funny or not is another story…
