Things are beginning to reach a fever pitch now. The city is struck with reckless acts of terrorism, destruction, Berg Katze manipulating the entire world and worst of all…I had to go back to school. Homework! It’s so, so terrible. But seriously, BK puts some intense pressure on planet Earth and it’s a wonder the Gatchaman group can stay so calm in the face of such a threat. |
I feel like this post is going to turn into more of a damage report than anything. Let’s tally up all the chaos Berg Katze has caused, shall we? For starters, he’s disguised himself as Rui and completely taken over GALAX. Using the computing power of X, he gives Crowds to a group called the “Neo Hundred” and makes Umeda their leader. That frees him from any direct responsibility for their actions. All he does is give some people this amazing power that can be used in any way you could imagine. He technically can’t be blamed for the fact that they choose to use that to tear through buildings like it’s a wet napkin.
It’s frustrating, but he’s staggeringly competent when it comes to turning humanity on itself without being the one to actually do all the damage firsthand. That doesn’t make him any more of a good person, but it doesn’t make humans look too good either. His evil plans are effectively pointing out some major weaknesses in the way people think and society functions – things that already existed long before he came here. He’s just taking advantage of them, and shoving it all in our faces as if to say “ah, aren’t humans so silly?”. Nowso more than ever, I’m beginning to see just what a big opponent they’re up against.
To fan the fire, Berg Katze decides that 100 people is not enough. Instead of hand-picking the best individuals with the purest of hearts, he goes for Rui’s blacklist. He then gives this incredibly life-changing power to every single person Rui personally rejected as a sad excuse of a human being. With one simple command, he just “uploads” the power to them. No magic, no flashing lights, just a simple message in neat black letters illuminated on their handheld screen. I love how the transfer of power was as understated as sending an e-mail, as if to remind us that you can instantly change lives with the power of the internet. It only takes a few seconds too. Just look at how easy it was for him to completely mess up Rui’s life and the state of their city just by taking over GALAX. When Hajime said not to rely on GALAX too much, I doubt she meant this…but it’s happening in a much more sinister way. Rui, you trusted GALAX with too much power and now it is capable of destroying the world. You should have made another friend other than X.
On the other hand, I still suspect that X might gain sentience and boot Berg-Katze out of the system. The fact it notices a difference in his speech patterns and mannerisms says enough about X’s intelligence. Even if it’s not quite “sentience,” it could still shut him out by recognizing his patterns as being totally off. When you use your credit card erratically in different countries, it’s shut off because they assume it was identity theft. The same could happen here. But this is anime, so I wouldn’t be surprised if (as Hajime predicted…and she’s always right) X somehow helps Rui and recognizes him as its only friend. Since all the power lies in GALAX…that also means all the power lies in X. Therefore X might actually be the one who sets things right, or at least helps as a buffer against all of the shit Berg Katze is doing.

From starting a revolution to making his own “youtube” comments to spark hate, Berg Katze is using all of the social media resources he can to destroy the world. It’s silly when you stop to think about it, but it’s working swimmingly so I guess I have to slap that grin off my face before he blows up an entire country using Twitter. He’s also not as hilarious as Hajime and her friends hosting a Gatchannel youtube/nico nico douga live stream to give people information about the situation. It’s an excellent idea to tell people what’s going on so they don’t panic, don’t get me wrong. But it’s also not a proper countermeasure against Berg Katze quite yet. They’re still warming up for something, and I’m eager to see just what they’re going to do to actually kill Berg Katze or get him off their planet. I doubt the final showdown will be yet another social media battle of who has more likes, followers, or positive comments. It will have to come down to fists soon, but for now the way the two of them are using social media to battle it out is a very refreshing change of pace from the norm.
The power social media has in society interests me. Berg Katze is obviously being a giant troll and fabricating comments, spreading rumours, and doing all sorts of things. He’s used all of this to single-handedly start a revolution. Hajime is using it for good, and slowly earning a set of loyal followers and believers. I feel like this will be a good first step to somehow getting a leg-up on Berg Katze…and it will be fabulous once it happens. But for all the importance social media has and for the way it reaches so many people so effortlessly – it can be very weak. Destroying the influence of social media is very easy, you see. All you have to do is turn it off. I love how the two messages were combined in this episode. Although the whole episode is a heated showdown through the internet with the entire planet at stake, Hajime and Rui can easily ignore it by shutting it off. So although it is a powerful and sometimes central aspect of our lives, it is also very possible to cut it out in certain ways so we are not entirely dependent on it. Hajime knows the right balance of embracing it and knowing just when to step away from the screen.
I’m still relatively new to the wonders of twitter and youtube so I can’t say I’m all that tuned in to that sort of thing. Still, it’s an interesting subject to me and I liked the overall message. What started off as a pure superhero show has branched off into a myriad of interesting concepts. I wasn’t sure if GALAX would be properly fleshed out, but it seems like it has become the main focus of the show. I can’t wait to see what the finale has in store for us. Berg Katze has the upperhand for now, but the Gatchaman crew are only getting stronger.Paiman is about 5% less of a dickhead, Sugane has grown up to the point where he is comfortable telling JJ he won’t follow orders, and Rui has joined their forces. Not only that, but Rui has stopped wearing girl clothes! Okay, so maybe short shorts isn’t that big of an upgrade in manliness, but he’s making progress! OD also makes them a force to be reckoned with his powers. Although his powers also entail destroying the entire world, so that’s not so great. I really want to see his fabulous transformation though! OD, spread your wings for us!
The only member not being a team player is Jou, who is basically just doing his day job and ignoring everything else. He still has his NOTE so he should technically be able to fight. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have his pride any more. Oh Jou, how you make me worry…
NEXT WEEK: how blogging sites like Metanorn can change the world. Err, don’t ask me how.

Sugane telling off JJ was a great moment. Hajime has definitely effected him. I have a feeling JJ was actually waiting for something like that. I love how this show is developing–it certainly isn’t your typical super-heroes vs alien villain show.
Now that Hajime has solved the riddle and Rui is out of his funk and joined the Gatchaman and X is getting suspicious of BK, things should start moving now. Can’t wait to see what comes next! Go Gatchaman! Go Hajime!

Well, see here’s the difference.
1) BK is a villain I can love to hate, you know he’s wrong, but he’s such an awesome villain that you don’t want him to be killed off.
The Shiki are instead villains that I simply hated. I had little to no sympathy for them, they didn’t have the charisma or delightful evilness to make me enjoy them as characters. By the end, I just wanted them all to die for how despicable they were.
2) I can take or leave a majority of the Gatchaman, and the way they think everything is going to turn out alright at the end and hold no gravity to their situation, just makes me want something to go wrong. These are good guys I actually want to fail.
In Shiki, I could feel compassion and care for the humans of Sotaba who were being killed off simply because they were food and they were in the way. I liked Ozaki and Yuki and I could feel for their plight. The story made me want care and for them to win.
So, yeah, you can blame Hajime and her happy-go-lucky followers on this one. I would be perfectly happy if every one of those birds crashed and burned…well, except OD and Joe, I still like them. 🙂

Even I side more with the shiki than BK (although I too was pro-humans when watching Shiki). But I get your reasoning. Shiki are just laypeople with sharp teeth doing what they can to survive. BK is a flamboyant, crossdressing alien with superhuman intelligence.
But yikes, you really want the good guys to die lol. I’d rather BK finally gets one-upped because I’d love to see his reaction to having the tables turned.

I’m the polar opposite on the subject. I’m sympathetic toward the Shiki (Even after three years, I’m still pro-Shiki/Anti-Ozaki) while I’m waiting for Berg Katze to get his rear handed to him. To my eyes, the Shiki, being tormented souls, just wanted a place for themselves without the constant need to hide and settling in a closed off village in the mountains was the ideal place. They did what they did because of their rising confidence of securing a permanent residence.
Personally, I never liked Toshio (Too idealistic) and Natsuno (Too much of a cold hearted bastard to everyone before trouble ensued) and excluding a few humans, didn’t really care for the general population. Growing tired with the cliché outcome of the humans getting away at the last minute, I wanted a story where the humans didn’t win since it would have been a change of pace. And by nature, the humans are their food. It would have been weird if they didn’t attack them. That’s why Seishin didn’t see it as a problem for them to attack humans while at the same time humans live off animals. It’s following the food chain so there’s hardly any villainy in it. Wasn’t evil so much as it was finding a next meal and increasing the population.
The methods Toshio used were so barbaric that I wouldn’t lift a finger to help him. What he did to his wife and Chizuru made me utterly pissed at him. Yes, the villagers were trying to save their own lives, but they became cruel, emotionless and obnoxious animals, more so than the vampires themselves. I read some comments while the show was airing and those moments were the turning points which even made the human supporters turn on the villagers and back the Shiki’s hope for survival.
Berg Katze on the other hand has my permission to die for being a first class fruitcake. He’s utterly evil so there’s no room for sympathy because his motives are simply for all out chaos and destruction.

I don’t know, this episode just didn’t do it for me. It kind of became how I felt way back in episode 1, where things just seemed too simple and too black and white. This show often has been uneven at times in it’s plot and characters, but for the most part, I’m glad I didn’t drop it at the beginning and gave it a chance.
However, I have to say, that episodes like this don’t help.
First off, forget JJ, Hajime is the god-like being here. That girl is never wrong, seems to know everything, has little to no flaws, and always, ALWAYS knows the right thing to say. To say she irks me, would be an understatement. As for everyone else, they’re all her little followers, so a lot of times it seems that whatever character they may have had, just gets overshadowed by hers.
The x-CROWDS members who had simply disagreed with Rui’s idealistic and highly naive motivations in favor of more realistic approaches or who simply had a different opinion, have now suddenly been turned into cold-blooded killers and terrorists? Really? Really…okay Gatchaman, thanks for taking even more grey area and simply making it once again black and white.
I am really here only for BK at this point, much of the time he’s the only thing I find of interest in this show. He’s so over the top and wonderfully evil. However, even at this point, they seem to be trying to dilute his character as well, by insinuating that the reason he went crazy and left Gatchaman was because of JJ and his “absent-leadership”? Well…that’s just cliche. A bad guy who turned bad because he didn’t like how the good guys did things…real original.
And then there is the Gatchaman’s rejection of JJ, which I thought was plain silly (yeah, the guy came to this measly little planet, gave you your darn powers, gave you the means of how to use them, and attempts to help you using his gift of prophecy….I’m sure he doesn’t care. Sigh.) and just makes JJ even more of a throwaway character who has had almost no character development this whole time.
I don’t know, I just…I guess this episode simply disappointed me considering the previous episodes and I feel as if it took a step backwards rather than forwards.
This felt like one of the weakest episodes in a long time. I give it a 5.5/10.

I think the big black and white thing here is just that Hajime is always right. I kind of like that because no one expects it from her, so her advice is rarely taken to heart. She’s grown on me a lot. The only thing I don’t like about her is that sometimes the way she talks just gets a bit too weird. No one talks like that in real life all the time.
I think the people BK recruited were all the rejected CROWDS users…as in people Rui never gave the power to in the first place. That’s why they’re more prone to violence under the leadership of someone as aggressive as Umeda. It’s still a VERY extreme route, but I don’t mind them exaggerating it since people can get power-hungry. They may say one thing, but go totally mad when given the power. Umeda sounded reasonable before, but now he’s desperate to provide for his daughter and he’s got all the freedom he wants.
As for JJ…He has been disappointingly absent. I’m sad he’s been so damned useless. I think Sugane’s rejection was more to say they will act without his orders than being ungrateful. Still, I’m also sad he hasn’t done anything aside from cut out birds.

Interesting episode, but damn it I am waiting for the epic final battle to start up and on a side note I can really tell that Mamoru Miyano is probably having an amazing time voicing the goofy main villain! I think he is doing a fantastic job <3

I liked Hajime’s mixing it up and going for the popular and public message. Lots of times, bad things happen because bad people spread FUD. I always believe having information out there is better than keeping it secret. Of course, I also assume most people are generally self-interested (always true) and generally rational (much less frequently true). But when true information is not out there, any information will be seized upon by the public. Even if some people don’t believe the true information, it’s better to have it out there competing with the lies.

I actually have a friend that we are opposites in nearly everything so whenever we go shopping together, I will show her an outfit and if she likes it, then it’s a no go, and if she hates it, then I’m definitely getting it, and vice versa for her.
Anyway, already said my piece about this episode. But this opposites thing might work out well in terms of seeing whether I would like a future certain show or not. I can already tell how you felt about the newest Free! episode. Let me give you a clue: I liked it. 😀

Well, we really don’t have that long to go. I like Free! more than Brothers Conflict, but both have their quirks.
There’s really no character I don’t like in Free. While Rin is my favorite, I like each character for their quirks and characters. I think the only one I can safely say I “don’t like” is Rin’s underclassman roommate, and I can’t even remember his name. I just find him a little boring and annoying. Unlike BroCon where there’s quite a few characters I don’t like, Free! barely has one.

His name is Aiichiro, and he’s by far the worst character in the show (nearly a groveling BL sycophant to Rin). Really, he’s terrible. And his association with Rin doesn’t help Rin at all.

You know, weirdly I just discovered that Rin and BK were voiced by the same seiyuu, which is interesting since both are my favorite character in their perspective series. (I usually can’t recognize Japanese seiyuu as well as I can Western VAs. I’m just starting to notice similarities and names.)

This episode shows how little people are willing to think for themselves when they hear a rumor. A couple of negative information and they mindlessly accept it. A monkey could responsible for the GALAX users going comatose and they’d believe it. Poor Rui.
Katze’s plan is working out because he’s manipulating human nature by picking a weak minded human easily influenced by power and fame and used him to spread the influence. If people weren’t so easily tempted with things that seem to make situations easier, he wouldn’t have gotten this far. Not to mention the use of the internet is one huge double edged sword. I guess that what he meant by it’s all their fault.
Good thing Hajime is there with a clear head to sort things out. Since she came along, she’s basically the un-official of Gatchaman and everything she does is right on the mark. Using Rui’s apology is definitely going to shake things up. What I want to know is how she plans to deal with Berg Katze.

Well, if the MESS don’t return and play a role in beating BK, I suppose their purpose was to show us that Hajime’s sideways thinking could solve problems no one else could. And her solving of that problem served notice that she’s the hero of the show, not just some airheaded character included for laughs.

I’ve been just WAITING for those little rubix cube aliens to make another appearance. If they don’t then having them in the first place was a dumb idea. They could have shown Hajime’s personality in other ways other than involving a throwaway alien race to later be ignored for BK.

I think the MESS were just a product Berg Katze was testing out to toy with people and realizes he no longer needs. If anything is dropped by the bad guy, it will be an obligation to be dropped by the story itself.

The Kasumigaseki district, as mentioned in this ep, is the location of the HQs of numerous Japanese ministry departments and is thus the hub of Japan’s bureaucracy.
The Neo Hundreds’destruction of the buildings and the Diet(Parliament) building would effectively cripple the Japanese government and hopefully plunge Japan into chaos, exactly as Berg wants.

They’re certainly succeeding in the chaos department. Even if they targeted random buildings to scare people, it would work. The fact they’re specifically going after the most important symbols of law and order just makes the blow that much worse.

I loved that Hajime decided to make a Gatchannel and with all that in her room. I think it’s the perfect place to make a channel, so colorful and all.
Thought still I’m worried about everything that’s happening. And it seems that we only have 3 episodes left *sob*.
I have a feeling that after “Gatcha~” ends, I’ll rewatch the whole anime in one day, just because how awesome it is.
Really hope the last fight will be a blast. Can’t wait, can’t wait.

Yesssss I really liked it too. The madness from BK and the Neo 100 was balanced out by the Gatchannel segment. It was so cute. I imagine things will get very serious for the finale, and we’ll get a physical fight of some kind. There should be juuuust enough episodes to wrap everything up. Hopefully.

This is out of nowhere but after a while, after becoming a blogger, do you expect a comment from a couple of known commenters on Metanorn?

For me it’s still a ‘put it up and hope for comments’. I mean, after a couple episodics of a show, you know what the audience of a show is, and what they generally want to talk about, and whether they’re going to comment.

Yeah, most comments are regulars for whoever is watching the show. Sometimes I won’t “see” certain people for a season if I’m not blogging something they’re watching. Every now and then someone new pops up too.
And I’m totally with Highway about comments. Although we all write for the love of writing, we also really really like discussing the topics we’ve covered (or missed!) from an episode. Discussion just makes it that much better since everyone has different opinions and specialties. Anyone who says “you shouldn’t care about comments” doesn’t realize it’s not a popularity thing, but a I WANT TO TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT ANIME thing.

There is no one that writes that doesn’t want it read and commented on. It’s in our nature. That being said, I agree with OC in that writing about what you love is a joy, and having the capacity to share that is sweet icing on the cake.

No problem. Just helping out a fellow commenter. And no problem on the assumption. We all make mistakes. When I first started commenting here, I couldn’t tell who were the commenters from the bloggers until I started looking at the top 15 commentator list. That and the blogger’s names are highlighted with a link to Metanorn itself.

Nope, avatars are just for fun (and expression). Even the links for names aren’t anything special, just people who put in a site address for the comment form.

Yup, you’re right.
I usually forget about anime blogs (because I don’t have time, or I just lose interest in them). But Metanorn was getting me exited every time when I only found out about it.
