Time for a pizza party!
Welcome to another review of Free on Metanorn and just like Overcooled, Kara and now I am tackling this episode this week! So you can expect to see more posts from the other writers, but enough talking, let us get right into things.

Whoa there buddy keep your swimsuit on.
Last week focused on Nagisa trying his best to recruit Rei who eventually gave in and joined the swim club along with the big reveal about Rei’s complete lack of swimming skills! I am sure I was not the only one laughing after that hilarious moment, but I kind of figured that he couldn’t swim judging by his reaction before jumping into the pool. While that was a really hilarious scene from the previous episode, this week followed the other club members trying the best to teaching Rei how to swim. However, with any special skill or unique talent, it takes lots of practice to improve that skill and since I draw, I can totally relate to everything Rei went through… So, did anyone else laugh while the other guys tried to teach him different swimming techniques but failed? That did provide a lot of comedy for me, but I will be honest and say that I was shouting at my monitor like “No! Dude why are you holding hands with the other guys!?” and yes I know that is HOW you teach someone to swim and the fact that we can not avoid the number one fact that Free is aimed at the girls and I bet there were screams of joy during those scenes. Besides all of that I thought it was great that we finally got to see Haruka and Rin have a conversation or was it? I mean sure it was all based around the upcoming swimming tournament but at least that is a step in the right direction for them to become friends or rivals once again.

That certainly was a crazy episode for me to review because of all the man-service shots of Rei, stretching beside the pool while wearing that speedo?! Thankfully he ditched that because they went shopping for new swimsuits, but I started to laugh watching Kou’s reaction as the guys modeled for her along with her comment about the guys taking forever to shop? While that was a hilarious comment it did make me roll my eyes because I hate shopping in general, but I know that is just KyoAni moe-fying the guys? So, what did you enjoy? Rei showing off his muscles, moe shopping boys, Kou drooling over the male models or Rin and Haruta’s short conversation? At least Rei discovered his own technique for swimming thanks to some random butterflies.

The best part of this episode for me was Ama-chan-sensei, staidly watching the club she is the advisor for from the sidelines… in her deck chair with parasol. While not as overtly trolling as Nana-chan from Chuu2Koi, she’s got close to the same attitude and demeanor. Plus her “mysterious past…”

Lol every episode is filled with so much fanservice.
That trip to buy swimsuits was really hilarious. I wonder if they really sell such cool swimsuits in Japan.
And what kind of difference Haruka sees in all of his swimsuits.
I think Rei has some kind of talent, I mean, have you ever seen someone with the ability to swim without moving an inch forward? It looks like those 3D samples on how to swim in different styles.
It’s just too hilarious. I think Haruka was right “the water hates Rei”. The water hates people, who do swimming without putting their heart into it. I bet that’s why Rin can’t beat Haruka.
By the way, is it me, or Haruka is really fond of Mackerel, to the point that he can’t live without it?
And that picture at the end of the episode. It seems that Haruka(or perhaps Rei and Nagisa too) will be spending a day at Makoto’s place playing video games. I guess after their swim in the ocean.
I thought that Makoto’s little siblings sleeping in their arms was so cute ^^.
And I didn’t know that Makoto is a Megane character too.

With all that arrogance Rei was exuding, you had to laugh when he flopped last time. Honestly, is everything a theory and calculation for Rei? He and Haruka are the most obsessed characters in this show. It’s unbelievable to accept that the reason he couldn’t swim was due to his swimwear but at least he finally found a technique unique to him.
Shark teeth, drying his head with a towel that says “Shark” on it. I think Rin is trying to tell us something. And Fosh, were you thinking of Jaws: The Revenge with picture of Shark-kun this week?

If you look carefully at the swimsuits Haruka picks out and models, the purple stripe patterns/curves on each swimsuit are slightly different from each other.
Other than that, there is absolutely no difference at all between them. (- ω -”)
Nagisa really likes the flashy, flamboyant swimsuits, doesn’t he? Even the yellow speedo Rei wore was borrowed from Nagisa!

And yep, still watching for the sparkling “DELICIOUS” imouto. Though why the hell is she all wrapped up in a jersey in a pool. She even said it’s getting warmer yet she’s all protected from the cold. Show some skin woman!
Swimsuit never OTL. One can only hope…And that was a lot of manservice than I could handle. That probably made up for all the times in anime when it was the opposite who are shopping and showing off their bodies. Retribution at its finest.
And how is it possible for Rei to not even move an inch. Even moving your limbs like that is sure to produce some movement and will keep you afloat. And I might not be a good swimmer(I only swim free as well) but butterfly is a difficult form yet he learned to swim properly with that. I just…. ehh, fuck logic I guess. All is forgiven with those fit and sexy bodies I guess. Just…/facepalm.
Despite the rant, I’m still enjoying the show. For different reasons but still enjoying it. Wouldn’t miss this show and the different reactions it garners from the people watching.

Yes, the fact that Rei mastered butterfly is illogical. I don’t know a lot about swimming, but this style looks more difficult than all the others.

Rei is adorable. So freaking cute! 😀 And that scene in the 3rd ep was hilarious 😀 😀 In this episode the sinking joke got a little repetitive though.

Well, I’ve finally caught up with Free!
This was a good episode with some very interesting moments involving all characters. While Nagisa and Makoto took a bit of a back role only coming in to help Rei learn to swim. We find that poor Rei, no matter what he does still sinks like a rock.
However, I did think it kind of strange that he pretty much was swimming in place underwater. With all that movement and forward push, he should have been able to swim at least underwater. Sure it might not be the type of swimming he wanted to do, but at least he would be swimming. His only issue would have been surfacing.
However, I thought it interesting that Rei tries and tries but doesn’t find his fit until the very end. And it’s really at that moment where you realize that it’s really been there all along. All those time where Rei was surfacing from the water to breathe, pushing himself up and out of the water all led to him finding his style. All he needed was some inspiration.
I like how Gou has sort of become a mother hen alongside Makoto, finding out what’s going on between her brother and Haru and trying to understand. The confrontation between Rin and Haru by the way, had sooo much sexual tension that it wouldn’t have looked out of place in a shonen-ai. Especially that scene by the gate and Rin’s words of how Haru will swim for him. Man, oh man…that is so much material to work with, it could make a fujoshi faint. 😉
However, I have to say, what does Rin mean Haru is out of shape? The guy is ripped as all crap and anybody watching knows that Haru could have beaten Rin if he wanted to. I’m wondering if what Rin said was simply nit-picking things that aren’t there out of jealousy?
This was a good episode and I thought they did a good job showing some of the heart of the true message of this story, especially some of the emotion with Rei and his frustration with being unable to swim. I thought the lady teacher’s epiphany about Edison’s quote quite accurate and very well played. I give this episode a 7.5/10.
Next week is going to be the beach episode, however, I think I might just enjoy this one.
