Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S – 08

Meet Frenda and all her special stuffed animal friends!

Last time Kuroko took over most of the episode last time, but that was alright because sometimes we need a break from Misaka doing badass things to change things up from time to time right? Just kidding I think just about everyone watching this season wants MORE Misaka! Even though most of us just want more Saten right? Last week hinted at the popular group known as ITEM appearing this week which has me quite excited because I remember reading about them in the Index light novel.

Fight on Misaka!

railgunS (6)

Misaka ain’t afraid of your weak ass bombs yo!

railgunS (7)

Frenda’s high kicks are quite powerful.

Whenever I look back both seasons of Index and Railgun I remember all of the crazy ass fights and yes I know what you are going to say, but Fosh each and every battle that Touma participated in end the same with a punch to the face. While that fact is true the same can’t be said about the battles found in Railgun even though Misaka does have one signature move that often gives her the upper hand, but at the same time we have seen her struggle against the likes of Therestina, Accelerator, Touma and now she is up against the dangerous group of ITEM! So who makes up the core members of this team? It really is hard to talk about some of them because it might open the door for SPOILERS so I will only talk about Frenda and Shizuri for now since they both display their powers to the world. That said Frenda on the other hand does NOT have any ESP powers unlike Shizuri and the other members of ITEM because she rely on her tactics on making bombs, setting up traps and I assume she has some martial arts skills or is just naturally talented at fighting? Either way her short fight against Misaka was great and sure she was basically trolling Misaka the entire time during their fight, but damn it proved to be very entertaining to see how someone with absolutely no powers can put up a decent fight against a powerful level five or was she just LUCKY? I know something similar happens with Saten from the previous season so it really is nothing new for most of us. So what was your favorite part of Frenda versus Misaka this time or where you bored because you just want to see Misaka vs Meltdowner instead? Either way works for me! I just love seeing these kinds of episodes.

Extra fun with Misaka and friends

railgunS (3)

If you do not she will break your arm!

railgunS (5)

The animation was truly epic this week.

railgunS (1)

Misaka-“I have more questions! Like where did you get your hat?”                    Frenda-“……….”

Frenda wins the award for best new character!

End thoughts

This was a fantastic episode for the action fans out there because there really has not been any OH MY GOD that was AWESOME moments besides the episode one and seven that displayed most of Misaka’s crazy abilities. I think the best moments this week was the introduction of ITEM and Frenda who provided enough entertainment during the dialog moments with her and Misaka. Since we have a new character to talk about this week with Frenda voiced by a fairly new actress Maaya Uchida who voiced Rikka of Chu2koi, Mao of GJ-Bu, Rea of Sankarea and Rei from Vividred Operation! I swear I could listen to her all day as Frenda. Before I wrap up these final thoughts I think Shinobu is probably going to find something important, but I think she is going to die soon.

I think Shinobu is going to leave us really soon.

Fosh. I don’t even know where to being…

Oh yeah. Of course I know where to begin.

Frenda. The OVER POWERED LOLi of Spring 2013.

OoOoOoOoO Dem Legs. And how they kick so much ASS!

Yes. So much POWAH to Uchida-chan!

This was one of those episodes where they sell you the seat, but you only need the edge.

Frenda is crazy awesome prepare. She is the LOLi Batman. In a kickin beret. And a hammerspace skirt. And and and….

    Slow down, skylion…..

    • d-LaN says:

AHAHAHAHAHAHA You will like Index S3, skylion 😉

      • skylion says:

Having enjoyed everything so far, Index S3 enjoyment is in the bag.

        • Highway says:

Man, I really dislike it when you guys all are enjoying a show I can’t bring myself to watch…

          Stupid K, stupid Index…

          *kicks pebble*

          • skylion says:

I’ll enjoy it enough for both of us, HWY…

          • BlackBriar says:

Would Accel World, Magi, Mushibugyo, Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle and Zettai Karen Children: THE UNLIMITED – Hyoubu Kyousuke be a part of that list as well? I kind of enjoyed those. Different strokes for different folks.

            • Highway says:

I watched AW all the way through, dropped Magi, am watching Mushibugyou (which is surprisingly entertaining), wasn’t around for Phi Brain, and never tried The Unlimited. Pretty much the only one so far that I’ve been jealous over has been K.

            • BlackBriar says:

Oh, yeah. I do remember you being around for Accel World. You should watch The Unlimited. I think it shows a very elaborate example of what would happen if humans had to share the planet with espers.

Dropping Magi is a shame. I admit it was a task to watch but it got so much better in the second half. Better info for me, there’s a second season slated for Fall 2013.

You haven’t been around for Phi Brain so here’s your chance to catch up and if I were you, I’d find some time to watch because there are two seasons with 25 episodes each. Overcooled blogged both which played back to back making it a full year that the show was playing. Metanorn had its own Phi Brain cult at that time with OC leading it. 😛 I stress on the finding time to watch because the last episode of season 2 said it would be back in 2013 and given that it’s practically Summer and it isn’t listed, the third season is going to be there for Fall 2013.

Then you’re going to be even more jealous of [K] because there’s another season in the works (information during the last episode) and thanks to ANN, I know there’s a movie for it planned to be released in 2014.

            • Highway says:

Magi I got through the arc after they were split up and Aladdin went to the tribe with the yurts. After that I never felt like tuning in.

Phi Brain is too much backlog for one (really, 2 cours is about all I’ll invest in a backlog show, and that runs the risk of burnout, like Chihayafuru), and I don’t know if it’s my style for another. If I like a show, I’ll keep watching it, but for instance, I just watched S1 of Minami-ke before watching the 4th season. But then there are shows like Star Driver (although I was glad it was done), and Mouretsu Pirates which I’m loving the heck out of right now. But generally, a show having more than 25 episodes puts me off of it.

And it’s such a shame about K, cause I can’t believe you guys like that show. Ugh, I thought it was so bad after that first episode, and nothing ever appeared to pull me back in. Everyone’s conversation usually does, but then the descriptions of the show, and the screenshots were just ugh.

            • skylion says:

Magi suffered from so much plot wrongness. It compressed elements that should have had the space to breathe, and drug out the breathe to ragged proportions those elements that could have been told quicker. The Balbad arc was just insufferable after two episodes. If I had to marathon it, I would drop it. Much easier to go week to week, but I’m probably going to avoid the next series.

Like Highway states, Phi Brain has to much backlog for me, and it doesn’t look my my brand of hijinks (no tea? no moe? what is this?). I’m having enough getting thru Fate/Zero (three or four eps in).

But, HWY, I am glad to see you enjoying Moretsu, one of my top five shows of that year. Good character, good plot elements, great pacing. Made of win.

I say all this, because you can slog thru Index. I understand the annoying nun is not the thing, but you can fast forward all the bits she is in, minus anything with special effects animation, and not miss much.

            • skylion says:

As for K, I’m right there with you, dude. I watched it and will watch it come second series, not because I like it, nearly the complete opposite. I watch it because it is so much fun to come here and see the episodic commentary. We have a nice, lively, well spoken and polite group (thanks Team), so it’s always a gas to share, even when we disagree.

        • D-LaN says:

You didn’t catch my sarcasm XD But yeah it will be a fun ride again and Fre|nda will be in S3 of Index.

      • BlackBriar says:

I hope there’s a third season of Index and that it comes along soon. I want to see Vento go wild again.

        • D-LaN says:

I’m looking 4ward to see the battle royale arc to be animated in its full g(l)ory 😛

      • Foshizzel says:

I wouldn’t mind a season three of Idex personally! There are some fun characters in that universe.

        • BlackBriar says:

Stiyl, Vento and that kinky nun Orsola certainly deserve a mention in the Index universe.

          • skylion says:

As does Agnese, one tough Battle Nun.

            • BlackBriar says:

Oh, yeah. I can’t believe I forgot her. At first I thought she was nothing more than a play it safe tsundere but after seeing her in that kind of outfit, I realized she’s pretty bold.

            • skylion says:

She is cut from the finest awesome. I was very happy to see them develop her character post Orsala arc.

Plus, we all know that Saten would get a great peek if she tried…

            • BlackBriar says:

A peek? There’s hardly anything to hide with that dress Agnese was wearing. 😛

            • skylion says:

Hey, I watched those scenes quite closely. She has vested reignments similar to Black Rabbit’s magic skirt.

            • BlackBriar says:

Ack! Don’t remind me of that fanservice abomination.

            • skylion says:

Aha, my rival reveals a weakness…

            • BlackBriar says:

              That… um… that’s only a minor irritation. It’s no weakness, mind you.

            • skylion says:

              …to late…

            • BlackBriar says:

I need backup. Where’s Tofu and his K-On troops when you need them? 😛

            • skylion says:

              Tofu has K-ON troops?

              WhatisthatwhatisthatwhatisthathowdoIgetK-OntroopsOMGIwantK-ONtroops!!!!!!!!!!!!1one

    • Foshizzel says:

Frenda is right up there with Shiroyasha of Mondaiji for most entertaining side character! I can’t wait to see our next year end awards <3

Frenda has a lot going for her! Great design, unique personality and yes hammerspace skirt xD

      • skylion says:

        Ah, yes, Shiroyasha….

Best supporting lady or best loli category?

  2. CarVac says:

If I remember right, Frenda was up against 3-days-without-sleep Mikoto. They kinda don’t say that in the anime, though… It makes things make more sense.

    • Hiss13 says:

Not to mention, I think Mikoto hadn’t eaten for that three day period either.

    • HannoX says:

I also think Misaka wasn’t taking her seriously at first and held back some. If she had attacked Frenda full out from the start I don’t think Frenda would have lasted long. But then she wouldn’t have been able to answer any questions, another reason Misaka didn’t go all out.

    • Foshizzel says:

Whoa! Even more reasons to cheer for Frenda and Misaka then xD

  3. Hiss13 says:

People seem to be super falling head over heels for Fre|nda.
Let me just point out how super ironic Frenda’s comments about her legs are for the novel readers. 😛

On another note, AIM Stalker, Rikou super takes center stage for the next episode. The character whose verbal tic which I am super imitating also takes action in the next episode. This battle is some super fun stuff.

    • belatkuro says:

      Fre|nda’s voice acting wasn’t half bad 😉

    • Foshizzel says:

      Frenda’s voice for the win!

Yeah I read some interesting stuff about AIM Stalker! Oh yaaaah the super chats! Sort of reminds of me Franky from One Piece who loves to shout SUUPEERRR!!

  4. sonicsenryaku says:

Uchida Maaya is a great upcoming voice-actress; she has demonstrated with Rikka from chu2koi how well she can switch from soft-spoken to cutesy moe voice. With frenda she has demonstrated how well she can voice characters with a great amount of energy; im truly impressed with her voice work

    • Foshizzel says:

I can’t wait to see more from Uchida Maaya! She has done an excellent job with Rika and with Frenda you are right she has a cute soft spoken voice xD

  5. PanzerJäger says:

Well, Frenda. A loli who’s stuffed friends are more deadly than expected. A girl with that much knowledge of explosives is not meant to be trifled with. But I have to agree, dem legs. And where was she storing all those bloody detonators up her skirt? Does she have a special belt or something?

It will be interesting to see what Shinbou does, I think she’s isn’t that cold deep down, and after seeing a human side to clones, see may be having the deepest of regrets.

    • Foshizzel says:

Frenda doesn’t have eps powers but she has a magical skirt that she can hide bombs in?! Aweesomeeeee xD

Yeah I believe the same thing about Shinobu and I think it is safe to say she FEELS bad for what she did in the past and is ready to pay for her mistakes, but I have a bad feeling she is going to die soon…

  6. Gecko says:

Forget Frenda’s legs, I want to know where she got that hair. Seriously, her and the MISAKA clones pre-haircut have nice hair. I was wondering about her hat, but then I realized it was rather short and moved on.

Well, it was fun to see Misaka have a bit of a struggle but still win in the end, I wonder if Misaka will ever consider learning some hand-to-hand combat/martial arts… She really ought to, considering how much trouble she has had when she can’t use her powers.

    • Foshizzel says:

Long haired Railgun characters for the win and of course who could forget Frenda’s legs? ;D

I know right? You would think Misaka would do some physical training instead of using her powers for everything, but at least she is a tough girl who can kick ass!

  7. Alynn says:

I finally caught up on thissss YESS

oh man I’m so excited for Meltdowner!

    • Foshizzel says:

Oooooh! Congrats I love this season 100% more than season one xD

      SAME

      • BlackBriar says:

The difference is that season two went straight into the action and story while the first took time to do so but was also combed with filler episodes through most of the run. Railgun S is a step in the right direction.

        • Foshizzel says:

As much as I love Kuroko/Saten/Uiharu scenes I tend to favor the over the top action scenes more, but those comedic/yuri-ish filled episodes are a good change of pace for the most part xD

          • skylion says:

Pfff, anyone can do over the top action. It’s the skirt flipping that makes this show unique. Yeah? Yeah…you know it’s true….

          • BlackBriar says:

I can always count on Kuroko to deliver in the yuri department. What I also like is Misaka and Touma randomly running into each other.

            • skylion says:

…with him always at a run…(well, not always, A Certain Iron Bridge comes into play)

  8. BlackBriar says:

For such a cute loli, Frenda’s pretty dangerous. And here I was beginning to think she was a mascot when she can actually hold her own against Misaka. The fight was interesting because you’d see very few level 0’s willingly taking an esper head on.

I noticed a lot of these characters like to use bombs. The first season of Railgun during the Level Upper incident, there was this guy wearing glasses who’d use artificially obtained powers to bomb places whereever a Judgment member goes. They must get a kick out of seeing things explode.

    • Foshizzel says:

Frenda for the win! I loved seeing her fight against Misaka and actually put up a decent fight? That was impressive <3

I guess the animation department loves to see things explode? I'd imagine they can reuse artwork and special effects like that all day? LOL

      • BlackBriar says:

I’m impressed Frenda lasted this long. Any other amateur would have been fried on the spot.

With so many explosions, the studio is probably paying tribute to Michael Bay.

  9. Hiss13 says:

I just came up with a model name for Frenda’s hammer space skirt.

HsHSG-01. Cut from the same cloth as the HsB-07s.

  10. lvlln says:

Frenda is perhaps a touch too nuts for comfort, but this episode had me falling for her. A normal holding her own against a level 5 through trickery, tactics, and fighting dirty; how badass is that? Ultimately, Misaka is just too powerful for her, but hey, she held the line until her own level 5 came to help, so she got the job done. Though I’m guessing we won’t see more awesomeness from Frenda now. I worry going back to espers fighting will mean more boring beam spam like last season, but Accelerator versus Misaka was pretty good, so hopefully next episode delivers.

    • skylion says:

She is the LOLi Batman, crazy prepared. I can even imagine her tailoring the dolls to suit the occasion; “Can’t have exploding Gekota, that will only anger the target to uncontrollable proportions.”

I was thinking about beam spam….yes, I hope they make that a bit more exciting.

    • Foshizzel says:

Hell ya! Frenda against Misaka was amazing and you are right it was impressive seeing her hold her own against a level 5! Yeah I know what happens to Frenda and I don’t know if we she will appear again? Who knows xD
