Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet – 02

It’s time for some piracy on the high seas! YARR!!!

spring13-jrowI’m aware that this episode has actually been out since the middle of last week, but I have quickly found a nice groove for myself in watching Attack on Titan and this back-to-back on Crunchyroll for a kickass hour of anime. Fosh & I are here to talk (in english) some more on Gargantia and Amy’s butt. I’m also using the english title because all these japanese titles suck.

Indeed we are! Amy’s butt and epic chats about giant freaking robots! I hope you enjoy the episode because I found it to be awesome and the surprise twist at the end left me shocked…damn…enjoy!

Fun with everyone

The language barrier is done well. I’m glad it is getting a mention in this, and the culture differences were played on and really a key point. The subtitles were goofy, but I thought they were funny and laughed at them a bit.

Amy is turning into a sort of “energetic” girl type, she knows her way around, a bit of a daredevil. Even if she’s scared of Red after this, I think she’ll really like him, and see a benefit and convince the commanders of Gargantia that he should stick around. I like her, I just hope Urobutchi doesn’t ruin her. The equation Jrow mentions is true, but I do worry that the odds might be thrown off if Urobutchi gets his way. Akane was such a great character in Psycho-Pass, I wonder if Urobutchi can get another great female character out with Amy.

The galaxy currents are pretty cool, I think they are a nice touch to this world. They’ve got electricity covered in this way.

Red went rather overboard on his attack of the pirates with that crazy beam. I get the feeling he might realize he’s killing people like him, not Hideauze. That could lead to a sticky morality issue. But maybe not.

    • Irenesharda says:

Honestly, I think Red knew very well that they’re human, but really it was a mistake on Amy’s part. Through the rudimentary translations, Amy told Red that pirates are “the enemy”. And after she pleaded with Red to help Bellows, all Chamber repeated back to him with that they require assistance. So all Red knew was that the enemy was attacking civilians and Gargantia wanted assistance from him. So Red did what he would have normally done in that situation: destroyed the enemy. He’s a soldier for a reason, and Chamber is called an “annihilation weapon”.

      • Gecko says:

Yeah, I suppose he knows. He’s just such a soldier and so much into annihilation, I wonder if he’ll become anything more than that, realize there’s more to life than being a soldier.

        • Irenesharda says:

Well, I don’t know if there’s anything wrong with him being a soldier. There are many who enjoy a long and fulfilling military career.
However, I do agree that I hope he finds a life outside of the military, and does have a family and friends. (Not that Chamber isn’t friend enough or anything. :P)

          • Gecko says:

I’m not saying he’s wrong, all though I suppose my comment could be read that way. Military careers are fine.

  2. Irenesharda says:

This was such a cute 2nd episode. I really enjoyed a lot of what they did here. The language barrier is really done well here, and it’s one of the most realistic ways of conquering that obstacle that I’ve seen in a sci-fi anime.

It took me a while to understand about the galaxy currents, but yeah after a while I understood the whole the thing with the bio-luminescent organisms that somehow have the enough power to do reverse lightning.

I loved Chamber’s friend-foe differentiation system and Red is a true soldier. He’s not coldblooded or anything, but he does his job. He helps them out because Amy asked and he thought it was the best thing to do for his own benefit.

Do you think that Red’s Commander will show up? I think Red is going to get homesick eventually, despite how home-like he might find Gargantia. I think having his commander there will help his as he will have something familiar around.

I will still go with my theory that the two groups, Alliance and Gargantia, are all happening during the same time, and that what happened is that while most people on Earth at the time of its freezing, left the planet, but some stayed and they survived. When the world finally melted, they had to start all over again, and that’s why the tech they have now on Earth is leagues behind that of the Alliance who simply continued advancing their technology from their point of leaving Earth.

Well, we’ll see what happens as the story unfolds. I give this awesome episode a 9/10.

    • Gecko says:

I don’t think he’ll get homesick, really. He’s always been controlled by the system and sleeping when he isn’t working, or just getting ready. Considering his life has been military service, always in the mecha, he doesn’t really have much of a home. He might miss his commander, but that’s about it.

      • Irenesharda says:

Well, I don’t know, even though he’s always been in the military, you can tell that he’s not an automaton. He has formed relationships with his fellow soldiers, which is why he gets emotional about them being killed, or races to help them even if it endangers himself, in the beginning scene of Ep. 1. Also, he has been outside of his mech, since he knows things about the world and can operate socially within it.

I think he will miss Space, and his military comrades even though he has been a soldier his entire life.

  3. Novashade says:

As expected from Mr Gen… I always likes his sci fi ideas.. They are in a way logical, given that those scientific barrier were not an issue.. His characters here are all well developed.. To people who have power, this is how one does their thing.. And I like how he can change the mood of his story.. Almost all of his works that were adapted to animation have had different feel to it..

Anyhow, loving it so far…But, would do better for me if they have got more actions in it though.. Nonetheless, I am ready to be surprised.. .I wonder if the butchering will happen and when… Lol…

    • Foshizzel says:

Wooooo! Science! I like the ideas as well.

Hell ya! I love it so far as well even if it feels somewhat slow to me personally, but I think it will start picking up soonish!

  4. skylion says:

Chamber is such a dude. “There is no one inside”. Yeah, right, tell me another one.

Yeah, we can talk all we want about progammed AI, but Chamber is a caretaker, a leader, support, structure, and responsible for and too his charge. He’s Redo’s big bro. That’s a person.

I love the reactions after Chamber’s pirate curb stomp. What was Gargantia expecting? Not this….in fact, I rather think they rushed in to ask for help having no idea what Chamber was capable of. Key point there.

    • Irenesharda says:

That was one thing that I really liked about Chamber, he’s in between that range of simple AI computer, and evil AI that thinks humans are the plague. He’s an AI that actually acts like a person.
He doesn’t ask Red about everything and will make decisions on his own when he sees the necessity. He didn’t ask whether or not Red wanted to go into hypersleep in the beginning, he simply did it because it his job to protect Red.
Yet, he also knows when a more human approach to the situation is needed and will ask Red to make the proper judgement.

I really like that in the beginning of the episode, when Gargantia rolled out their mechs and the whole situation was escalating, Chamber actually moved from behind Red and stood directly in front of him, as to protect him if anything went down. Cause you mess with his charge, and you’re gonna find yourself “annihilated”.

Chamber is such a cool onii-san!

  5. HannoX says:

The great gulf in technology was shown in a most emphatic way with how easily Chamber annihilated the pirates. So how are the people of Gargantia going to react? Are they going to be terrified and some want to kill Ledo because he could be a danger to them or take the opposite tack–because Chamber is such a horrendous weapon they’re afraid of Ledo and bend over backwards to appease him? Or do some think of how they can take advantage of him?

This is such a great show and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

    • skylion says:

As long as Amy is around, it could go in either direction. If she isn’t around, it could get very very ugly, rather quick. Given that this is a Urobachi script…..

      • HannoX says:

Maybe Urobachi’s going to kill off Red towards the end and Amy has to climb into Chamber to battle the Space Flowers. Chamber accepts her because she’s bonded with Red and him and he needs a human to authorize certain actions on his part, like firing on someone. And Amy pays a heavy toll for that.

I’m not really guessing that that’s what happens. It’s just that this is written by Urobachi so you never know…

  6. Highway says:

I eyerolled at Chamber wiping out all the pirates at the same time while not harming so much as a hair on any of the friendlies. That went a little too far for me to suspend my disbelief.

Other than that, I still like the show and it’s a lot of fun.

    • skylion says:

Yeah, I can see your point. It does fly the Rule of Cool colours rather loud. But then, big AI fighin’ robot can do anything…

    • Jrow says:

You mean that anime where a giant talking robot shoots lasers at plants went over the threshold of your suspension of disbelief?

      Highway, c’mon man, that’s cray.

      • Highway says:

Hey, you can only push me so far before I snap!

The thing is, I can imagine a world where there’s a giant flying talking robot that shoots lasers. And also where there’s a giant spaceborne plant that fires a gigantic cannon. But I can’t come up with one where light beams deflect and go in all sorts of different directions without something acting on them.

        • akagami says:

I wasn’t quite sure how he fired inside the ship while flying in front of the bridge… every indication seems to point to the pew pew lasers firing straight. I don’t think I saw any pew pew bend.

          • Highway says:

To hit those guys inside the bridge, they went horizontal, when he was elevated above the ships, so they’d have had to bend or reflect somewhere off camera to be going in that direction.

      • Foshizzel says:

@Jrow: LMAO! This cracked me up!

@Highway: True I suppose logically that wouldn’t work that well hahaha

  7. Liza says:

Red and Chamber 1, Pirates 0. Loved how he pwned them all. and everyone’s expressions afterwards. Still wondering how Chamber could tell which was the enemy and which wasn’t since pirates are humans too…

    • skylion says:

…yeah, I wonder that as well. Either he had a full scan of every salvager, and could pinpoint them exactly…which is an ass pull, or he has a partial scan…which is drama.

      • Irenesharda says:

Actually, if you look closely at his scan, you can see that Chamber can actually pinpoint every pirate and salvager, and he puts pirates as read little people targets, and salvagers as blue. You can never hit a wrong target again!

Chamber is just awesome like that!

    • Highway says:

Duh, he picked all the guys with eye patches and peg legs…

      • skylion says:

Sir, I defy your rank stereotype. I, and my peg leg, shall me you at dawn!

        • BlackBriar says:

Bring your pistols and settle this dispute like gentlemen. 🙂

          • skylion says:

Sir, I am a drunk, and a coward. There would be no honour is a duel.

I shall send my seconds, the Ladies Oshino and Leticia…..

            • BlackBriar says:

You’re not helping out your cause, friend. Mentioning those two to do your dirty work might cause me to join in and turn you into swiss chesse from being riddled with bullets.

            • skylion says:

You have this interesting way of begging for mercy…

  8. Jrow says:

Note to self: Back away just a bit from the microphone in future recordings. Those P’s were popping this week.

  9. BlackBriar says:

Not much to say on the development. It was slow taking its time to better explain the story and start a bond between Red and Amy while at the same time improving Chamber’s language skills. Amy is such a cutie. Moe suits her well and I hope she becomes as important as Psycho-Pass’ Akane. The episode was serious eye candy with the visuals. The calm atmosphere with the galaxy cuurents made me feel like I was watching one of Hayao Miyazaki’s films.

The reactions of the authorities were painfully and obviously typical doubting what Amy says because she’s just a kid. You’d think if people listened to what a kid says once in a while, the possible senseless casualties would be kept at a minimum.

The ending sequence makes Chamber a bit too overpowered killing off the pirates so quickly and precisely, even distinguishing them from the inside of the ships. There wasn’t even anything left of the pirates. Destroy Decomposer mode, anyone? It would have been something to savour if things were drawn out a little.

    • HannoX says:

I think the idea was to show that the Alliance’s technology was orders of magnitude beyond that of the humans who remained on Earth. If so, it’s sure to play a role later.

  10. Namika says:

Chamber is so cool 😀 I want a robot like him too~
Now that Red decided to lend a hand, I think everyone will start to trust him more. Cant wait to see that :3

And that scene, with some fish or whatever Amy brought to Red was so cute, I couldn’t help but replay it several times 😀 that thing did look gross, though…. dunno if I would have eaten that =_= yuck

    • Irenesharda says:

I agree about the fish. I would have been right there with Red. “Umm, you’re going to have to cut off the head, fins, tail, scales, and de-bone that fish, before I put it anywhere near my mouth.”

      • Namika says:

        *handshake*
Seriously. And did the sound it made when Amy ripped it apart sound realistic or what 😀 eeeewww

    • Liza says:

At least Amy was nice to give him the piece that didn’t have the bones? Or from what I saw…it looked like it didn’t have the bones…

    • akagami says:

It looked raw to me. I hate sushi >.<

      Love fish, just not raw.

      • Namika says:

I think it was, in fact, raw. Why do you hate sushi, it’s so tasty <3 But that thing looked really strange, it was nothing like your regular fish O-O

        • skylion says:

It was, in fact, cleaned out, with eyes, neural ganglia, and other sides stripped out. And it did have bones, but the fish is small enough to where that is actually part of the meal.

      • Irenesharda says:

I’m okay with sushi, I really like it. But that fish looked like it has been cooked, and yet I’m still not eating it with the head, fins, and tail still on.

    • Namika says:

And Chamber trolled Red, by saying that it’s a corpse, I swear 😀 😀 😀

  11. zztop says:

Now if those pirates brought their jars of dirt with them like Captain Jack Sparrow did, none of this would have happened!

  12. chikorita157 says:

I am liking this show already. While I don’t watch mecha, this show feels a lot like Waterworld with robots. I wonder how Ledo will convince them to become his allies.

Also, I like Amy’s friends already, they look cute.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah! It doesn’t feel like a true mecha compared to the likes of Valvrave or Majestic Prince, but at the same time it feels like Eureka Seven in terms of the robots are in their world, but they never become the main focus of the series and yes this is like waterworld with robots.

As for Ledo I guess it is one of those you scratch my back and I scratch yours until he finds a way to return to space! I think they will find a ship underwater and probably with Chambers help fix it up?

      Agreed Amy’s friends are cute!

  13. anaaga says:

Obviously Chamber is the greatest, coolest, bishie-est, sexiest, strongest character of this anime.
