Hello everybody, indeed! Spring season has been rolling along and there are a number of shows I’m enjoying and intend to keep up with weekly (comedy has been a surprise plus for me this season with MgRonalds/SNAFU/Mermaid). This show right here is definitely the one I’ve looked forward to the most. I’ve really enjoyed Gen’s work and look forward to watching his latest with I.G. // Fosh & I will be doing mini-talks for this series throughout the 12-ep run, so I hope you’ll take the time to listen in and enjoy our discussions. |

This is the best mecha series so far this season. Lt. Red (Yes, I will refer to him by his real name, it’s not my fault Japan keeps naming characters names with the infamous “R” they can’t pronounce!)is a very interesting character and I too thought him similar to Sagura from Full Metal Panic when I first read the summary. But as much as I liked Sousuke, I have to say that I like Red better. He has literaly been bred to be a soldier as Chamber states that he has had over 146,000 hours of military service, which is equal to about 16.5 years. Red is only 16 years old! His military service started when he was born, and only now does he get leave to go to Avalon and get luxuries like “food, sleep, the ability to reproduce”? They also talk a lot about “superior” specimens of the human species? Do we have some eugenics going on in Avalon? I’m not sure I like this utopia. But then again, I guess times get hard in the future as humans no longer have a planet to call home, and have had to survive against the Hideauze who from what they show have destroyed several of their colonies before this.
The beginning was very techno-babbly and so its kind of confusing, but you get the gist of it. I understood it better on a second watch. I too think that maybe the wormhole knocked him into another time, but then again maybe not. If it was another time, the positions of the stars would have been different and Chamber would have said something when he used the stars to triangulate where they were. So maybe what happened is that while of humankind left earth after a great catastrophic tragedy, sometime in the past, some of the humans went back to earth, forsook technology, and over the millennia the story about going out to space became a legend for those on earth, while it was vice versa for those in space? I don’t know, that just a theory.
While the fish-out-of-water story has been done lots of times before, this one still seems fresh as we face the spaceman meeting the caveman. Red is now faced with a world only told of in legend, and he has to learn to face realistic problems as simple as the language barrier.
But Red isn’t the only star here, we also have Chamber: Anti-Hideauze Annihilation Weapon. Chamber is a character all unto itself and I LOVE that. Chamber acts as an abrasive between Red and the humans as he is the translator between their different languages. He is Red’s friend and companion and gives him advice. Chamber is something that I really haven’t seen in many mecha before.
Amy is an interesting character, and her adorable squirrel Grace, is so cute. Amy is thankfully not an annoying character at all and I enjoy her wayyy more than the female lead in Full Metal Panic (I don’t even remember her name, that’s how much I didn’t like her. >_<)
This episode was awesome! I like all the series. I have already seen Episode 2 and I really like where it's going. If Episode 3 continues to be awesome, this will defiantly be a keeper.
My biggest fear is that they will do what I call "Angel and the Badman" Syndrome (and if you get that reference, you know your movies! ^_~). This is where you have an all around badass who meets a girl who teaches him that he shouldn't kill and to put away the proverbial "gun" to have a peaceful civilian life. I hate that in stories. I do not want this show to "pussify" Red. Yes, you can let him experience the joys of civilian life, but don't have him stop doing what he does best! He's a soldier and he's always been a soldier. There is nothing bad about being a soldier. Don't try to make him into some civilian mechanic or something. Let the guy protect you all and Gargantia by destroying and killing your enemies. You get protection, he gets to live a normal life on his down time. Perfect.
Well, this show has almost reached "get it on DVD" levels for me, so I sincerely hope that it doesn't disappoint me. -_-

Yeah Red is a interesting character and I need to see more episodes! Thankfully I found episode two and I will get on that asap, but yeah right now Red is better than Sousuke from FMP, but the idea is roughly the same even though Red has Chamber and Chamber is just awesome as a partner I hope we learn a bit more about Avalon or will we? I guess we will focus more on earth adventures with Amy and Red.
True your theory could work! I just know when dealing with space/wormholes you always have the chance for possible surprise time traveling, but yeah I can honestly see it play out both ways in the end.
Angel and the Badman: OH GOD PLEASE NOOOOOOO! I don’t want Red to be turned into a peaceful dude, but like I said I need more episodes to judge characters like Amy and Red, part of me doesn’t want to see them become romantic even though since they are the main characters anything is possible.

After watching the episodes again, I do see a big difference between Red and Sousuke. Sousuke thinks totally in military terms, even expressing it in normal day situations because he is stunted socially thanks to his background. Red actually does have social skills to a degree. He can understand diplomacy and does not always use violence as his first answer. He could have easily killed all those people in the barge, but he knew they were not really threats and so simply avoided them. He took Amy hostage so they wouldn’t kill him on site, in an act of self-preservation. But one shot with his “ray-gun” through the heart of the head could have killed instantly, instead he aims for the ground.
Sousuke seems to always be in military mode, but Red actually seems to be able to turn his soldier mode on and off. This was apparent when in the beginning he’s talking to Chamber about his life and getting leave and so forth, and how he changes when he goes into battle.

True I feel the same, but in the beginning you could tell Red had zero desire to stop fighting monsters and return to a “normal” life or does he even know what normal is? From my view it looks like he would be bored! True Red could have done a lot of damage if he was pushed far enough but he didn’t so I guess he isn’t all kill first ask questions later.

I don’t think he “desires” to fight persay, but it is all he knows. I mean, the first thing he asks when he wakes up is “where’s the enemy?”, so it’s simply a first response. He has never had another life, and since he and his commander look alike, I suspect he’s actually been bred to fight (I don’t think ALL people who live in space have silver hair and pale skin, since Red never mentioned anything about the Earth people’s hair or skin.) and he’s just blase about it.
When Chamber tells him that he will be able to have limited citizenship rights which include the right to control his own food, sleep, drink, etc. he brushes it off and says that that would be too complicated for him. I don’t think he really likes or dislikes fighting, though you can tell that he does care about his comrades and defeating the Hideauze that are hurting his people.

I wonder, will we see more/enough of Avalon in the future…. I’m sure interested as hell about what is going on there. I don’t think Red served since he was a baby though 😀 Who knows how many times he was frozen and woken up 😀 Judging by how easily he came to and moved around after being there for 6 months, it’s not hard to imagine that in reality he’s way more than 16.
Also, I have to agree that having a robot as the main characters best friend, per say, is really unusual and fresh.
I think Red should and will become a little softer, because he is a human being. And since he suddenly ended up in a place like Gargantia, where he isn’t very much needed as a cold-blooded soldier, he’ll start to experience the blessings of a normal life. He’s just destined to undergo serious changes, but you’re right, because him becoming a COMPLETELY different person will be too much. Though considering that this is Urobutcher’s work, I doubt that it’ll be that normal and happy

It was just his bio on the official website lists him as 16, so I went off of that. And he of course wasn’t fighting as a baby, but his military service started the moment he as born. I’m guessing this Avalon society might have a sort-of socialist society where the government chooses your profession of something?
I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Avalon. I hope not. I also don’t think Red will be the only space soldier to arrive on Earth. They’ve given his CO, Cmdr. Kugel a bio as well, as well as his mech, which is named Striker. (By the by, Striker has a female VA, so maybe even Chamber can have a little romance action going on, hmm? 😀 )
Now, while normally I would be worried about Red’s CO wanting to take over Earth, or destroy Gargantia because he’s a stereotypical anime military brute who only thinks in terms of strategic importance, I’m don’t think so. In the beginning scenes, what little we see of Kugel makes him a good military man with a sense of honor. He is willing to go against regulations if it will protect others. He didn’t chew out Red, when Red broke formation to go and help a ship that was in trouble. He didn’t tell him to leave them until it was clear that the ship was a goner. He’s a human guy whose a good commanding officer as he feels responsible for the protection of his men and his home. So I wonder how he will feature here in the story line? Will his response to Earth be similar to that of Red’s?

@Namika: I want to see Avalon as well, but does is it even real? I wondered about that and you might be right! Who knows how many times he has been put to sleep just to wake up months later to fight? Then again I sort of like that realistic take on space travel xD

Eventually Red will become softer, but part of me feels that I don’t want to see him give up on being a soldier! Who knows maybe our new human characters NEED someone like him to motivate them? That said, do we really even know how dangerous earth is right now? Besides the uhh new characters in the second episode…as for the Urobutcher’s work we shall see how the death toll is at the end of the series!

This was an impressive debut. It’s got some great rocking visual style, slick character design, the trad animation and cgi was blended to perfection…
And it has one of the best interpretations of a running language/translation convention ever. When learning a new tongue, always go for the dirty words first.

…well, you know my tastes by now. If this show does got a bit SoL, then it will be it’s own version, and only for a few select scenes or an episode. I think, thematically, this show is about the evolution of the United Human space faring peoples, and maybe how fake they might be….So some paradise style SoL might be needed as contrast.
I don’t know if Redo will ever see Amy as anything other than a carry-on…..

Did you guys miss the huge blinking “FORESHADOWING” sign that showed up when Red was talking about how he doesn’t need leave or any of that stuff that was included in the mention of Avalon? Whatever you think about Urobuchi’s writing, he’s about as subtle as a giant locomotive, filled with smaller-but-equally-powerful locomotives. To me, that means a big component of this show is going to be a romantic interest between Amy and Red, because it got mentioned. And he’s going to learn how important love and relationships are.
Now it will likely be done in a way that doesn’t completely derail any action or plot, because Urobuchi’s a better writer than Reki Kawahara any day of the week. So I don’t see this going south like SAO did (even if I didn’t mind Kirito and Asuna’s Married Adventures, I realize that’s not what most people wanted to see). But I’m pretty darn sure we’re going to see a romantic relationship.

I’ve actually been seeing a lot of people mentioning that Urobuchi is only co-writer and that Murata is really the one calling the shots. So how much will be Urobuchi’s calling cards? I don’t know. I do hope that this show doesn’t take the traditional route and make Red and Amy love interests, or if they do, make it very subtle.
As to Red’s leave, I can understand why he said “why bother?”. I mean, you serve in the military for 16 years and only then do you get to have vacation time?! And only for a month?!!
Why bother when you have be back on the front lines again in 4 weeks for who knows how long? You might as well stay where you’re at.

You said it right there. Exposition is always in danger of running of at the mouth, babbly in place where it just doesn’t belong, and this is a prime example of that. It added nothing to the scene. In prose it’s a necessary thing, in a visual medium, it’s almost always avoidable, but never is….
Really, that is my only gripe so far. Chamber is just too darn sexy….

I love delving into world building, but I think this is one of the times where all the stuff in the battle before the wormhole is extraneous information that we don’t really need to worry about (and if it is, that will be a strike against this show, imo). I felt the purpose of that whole thing was to impress us with the technical and teamwork prowess of the forces fighting for Avalon against the Hideauze, not really to let us know much about the techniques themselves (which were neat, just really glossed over).
So if you didn’t follow it, I’d imagine that’s fine. Just be impressed at their war effort (even though they failed).

It was quite the head turner. After hearing, Sugita Tomokazu belt out Joseph Joestar for the past four months, it’s surprising to hear he voiced Chamber. Chamber is such a dude.

This is the second spring season show I watched and I really like it.
It’s so interesting, how the two parts of the first episode look and feel so different. I don’t even know how to put it… I just really liked those 2 episodes! I liked the atmosphere, I liked the music and the mc. I think he will become a sweetie with time :3

I wouldn’t say that romance is Urobuchi’s weak point. He develops it well, just like dangling all that potential in front the viewer’s face and then breaks that potential and all expectations anyone may get for a certain couple into molecules.

So far Amutofan123 it is a tough battle between this series and Attack on Titan or Aku no Hana because it is a “different” take on anime that we consider normal and I almost forgot RailgunS and Valrave ahahah

Yeah, I would put Gargantia > Titan, but barely just. You should be watching Valvrave, as it was one heck of a freekin’ good debut. I would cite it as a good example that builds a show out of standard tropes, but manages to make those standards owned. I put Idolmaster in that sort of example as well.

Valvrave is amazing. For almost the entire beginning its basically a step-by-step Gundam clone, and I like some Gundam clones as long as they’re done right. This one however…let’s just say make sure you stay after the credits. You’ll get a twist ending that you won’t believe.
Valvrave comes to number 2 of the 3 main mecha series this season. Slightly under Gargantia, but way above Majestic Prince.

…sorry for catching up with your reply four days later. Is MJP any good. No. It’s wretched. Character design is terrible and unsuited to the backgrounds, the animation is typical, and is difficult to keep track of. It’s trying to be cute, and it’s trying to be a satire, and it’s trying to be heroic, and is failing….
…but it is trying, and doing better than other shows that don’t.
I called it a Mecha series on laxatives to a friend IRL.

Awww, it looks pretty great but I don’t really know what to say. I can only say that I expect great things from this anime because, you know… Urobutcher is always on the corner to take us by surprise.
Oh, and it’s funny to see the misinterpretations from Chamber XD
And I thought that the time in which the humanity is in was the past but by watching the episode 2, I think it’s actually the future. Why? Simply because it is mentioned that in Red’s timeline, humanity had to go to space because the sun’s irregularity made the Earth freeze and in Amy’s timeline, there is this legend that the world became livable after the ice in the Earth’s surface melted and created a planet of ocean.

Episode two was CRAZY and as for the “time travel” aspects of the series I could see it playing out as the past or future honestly, but one thing is true we are dealing with some type of time related story.

I think there were a lot of things that got mentioned in all of the talking that allude to the place Red is from.
When he was told about going to Avalon, he would be granted limited rights. This makes me think that there were two groups of humans and one lost, becoming the slave army for the winners, who get to live on Avalon. The army not having regular rights as humans is odd, considering everywhere on this planet that I know of, soldiers are full citizens.

Omg, I forgot that Red isn’t even a citizen yet! There were some on a forum that were suggesting that maybe Avalon is similar to Ancient Rome in that you could serve in the military for a number of years in order to earn your freedom and/or citizenship, and that they also had eugenic rules and were more strict in the freedoms or lack there of, of the people.
Only actual citizens seem to have rights. In fact Red has never even BEEN to Avalon since that is only a right given to citizens. You also get the right to “sleep, eat, drink, and reproduce freely” which are all basic human rights, that I’m guessing are all actually controlled for non-citizens of this society. It’s probably to control the population in response to limited resources.
I wonder how poor Red will actually respond to the much more control-free environment of Gargantia?

You can tell this is Production I.G’s work because of how vibrant the color and animation are and since it’s only 12 episodes long, I’m expecting Urobuchi to jump start his sadism from right here. So brace yourself for tragedies.
One thing I’ll have to keep on top of is the naming of characters because of the sub groups for the episodes. The version I saw had the lead’s name as Ledo while others and MAL says it’s Red.
Like Fosh said, this could also be a time travel anime because of the use of wormholes which is something that distorts time and space. Since Chamber barely has any data and indicated that he and Ledo have arrived at the planet that humanity originated, one can they’ve been thrown into the past. Not to mention the inhabitants didn’t have the technology to even scratch Chamber’s surface.
What wins my focus is the hibernation aspect. At the start Ledo/Red wakes up from a sleep for who knows how long and then again for six months after he crash lands on Earth. With that being a regular thing, there has to be some side effects implied. Like because his body is used to being in suspended animation, he could be older than his appearance shows. Similar cases I’ve seen with Cowboy Bebop’s Faye Valentine and Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Aang. Both of which look young but are old enough to be grandparents or great grandparents.
LOL at Jrow mentioning the coding for episode downloads. There are those who love their shows so much that they rarely pay any mind to how big that one episode will be. Luckily, there are enough anime sites to choose from. My favorite being Cyber12 for episode quality of 720p and acceptable memory between 80 and 85 MB. The external hard drive I have has a memory count north of 160 GB in videos and about 90% of that is Cyber12’s humble work.

It’s not outside the realm of probability that after the people who left earth left, they progressed more rapidly, or even that those who stuck around were not able to maintain that level of technology. I mean, as far as we know so far, Avalon doesn’t really try to contact Earth, so maybe it was a ‘You guys all suck, we’re taking our cool stuff and leaving’ thing.

Well considering that there was a near extinction level calamity that happened on earth, it might just be that the people who survived on earth just had to start over and are only just now catching back up to the tech that we have at this present day. The people of Avalon started out with present day tech and just took it further for thousands of years. Remember that enough time had to pass in order for the Earth to pass out of memory and into legend, and also, for there to be “drifters” who aren’t aligned with the alliance or haven’t even heard of the alliance, that are simply traveling on their own through space.
As the Milky Way galaxy is an awfully large place, it is very possible that Earth people and the Alliance know absolutely nothing about the other except what they have in legends or fairy tales.

Seems like the majority of you really like this so far. I found the whole first half poorly done because I was like “wut… *rewind* … wut?” during the first half. At least with Horizon I was interested enough to look up more online, but this didn’t seem to be put together that well.
Not a big fan of the mech designs, they look like dolls. Mechanical dolls, but still doll-like.
Not that impressed so far, but decent enough that I’ll continue watching it for now. I’m getting strong Macross vibes though, which isn’t a bad thing.
