First Impressions – Haiyore! Nyarlko-san W

The Crawling Chaos is back for more craziness!

spring13-fosh

Oh boy! Haiyore Nyaruko-san W is finally here to cause us to laugh our butts off, but can it live up to the excitement and hilarity of the first season? I guess we shall find out and this time I have the pleasure of tag teaming with one of our new blood Highway! I hope you have fun reading these posts on Metanorn.

spring13-highwMy first tag team post, and it’s with Fosh. No pressure or anything! But for a show as much fun as Haiyore Nyarlko-san! was, the sequel has a lot to live up to. With everyone back to save the Earth from random bad guys, let’s see if it kept up the fun, or fell flat.

Picking up where they left off.

Nyarlko Idols Live!

Highway // What happens when you mix crazy characters in a love polygon, add in a lot of “space”, and throw in the crawling chaos of Lovecraftian mythos? As we learned a year ago, a lot of fun. And Nyarlko is back with a “W” season. As is typical of the show, the W is both a reference (Kamen Rider W, a frequent source of Nyarlko’s references) and a pun (W = “daburu” = double), and as we saw in the first episode, they picked right up where they left off at the end of the first season. They actually did a good job to work in some introductions throughout the show in different ways, bringing folks up to speed on who is what (by reading the Call of Cthulu synopsis), and even overtly introducing Tamao and Takehiko, with Nyarlko breaking the 4th wall and Mahiro lampshading it. We even got a couple pieces of the first season’s theme, and I thought it was great that they slid Tamao in the cosplay cafe scene when they were singing it, since she was one of the original singers. But apart from those few moments, the show really moved forward with a new plot.

Reference corner

There's no 4th wall for Nyarlko

Foshizzel // I have been brought onboard to guide you through all the various anime references that fill the oddball world of Nyarlko-san and just like last season there were a few that ranged from One Piece, Pokemon and the obvious Kamen Rider outfit Nyarlko wears when saving the day. This time I managed to spot quite a few starting with the old school TV series Bewitched? Who knew that Nyarlko had magical powers? That certainly was a strange! They also put in the actual lovecraft tabletop game Call of Cthulhu, but the easiest reference to spot comes from the Lucky Star opening. After that the cast of aliens took a visit to an anime shop to give a quick shout outs to OreShura, there were several posters plastered all over the place and I swear I saw a tiny picture of Oda Nobuna no Yabou and manga covers of Nyarlko as well? The best references go to the cosplay café because there was mention of a certain pop group that also had their anime series wrapped up with AKB0048! Nyarlko told Mahiro he can become the center and she practically spelled AKB before getting cut off, but this is why I love watching Nyarlko-san, also if I managed to miss something feel free to throw them in the comment section.

Accidental Success?

Using the fancy graphics

Highway // The plot of this episode was really a secondary consideration. The main point was to get back into the show, and the story of the alien who sneaks onto Earth to write a BL story about Mahiro was just a small part of it, so small that she gets beaten by Nyarlko and Kuuko without even knowing about it. The main part of the show was to get us back into the craziness that is Nyarlko-san, and it certainly delivered, just like yamanso.com. We also got to see the new OP and ED, and for as much as I enjoy the first season’s OP of Taiyou Iwaku Moeyo Chaos, I think I immediately liked the new OP, Koi wa Konton no Reichi, more. And so far, the production values of the new series look good, with lots of action in every scene and fast animation with no corner cutting visible, although they even lampshade that, saying they need to use the fancy magic circle graphics while the budget is still good. But with a start like this, all signs look good for a fun and exciting romp through the Spring season for the Crawling Chaos.

More Fun with Nyarlko!

End thoughts

Well were back in full swing this season starting off with a great first episode for me, but I know the comedic moments of Nyaruko-san are either hit or miss especially with the various anime references that pop up randomly. While all that is great I am curious about the appearance of Kuuko’s sister in the opening! I remember the last season a few people said that she does have an older sister somewhere, but what about Nyaruko? Does she have other family members that might appear later on? I guess we shall see as things progress. Speaking of progression what do you think will happen with Nyaruko and Mahiro’s relationship? Will they finally develop some romance between them or are they destined to continue on their current path of a comedic duo? Then again, I don’t really look at this comedic series as anything truly “romantic” because in the end just like Mahiro thinks he would be dating an alien.

I have to agree with Foshizzel that there’s unlikely to be anything romantic in the works for the show. I just don’t see them needing to go there, when there’s plenty of tension and comedy with the love polygon of Kuuko > Nyarlko > Mahiro < Hasuta. But where else will the series go? I’m sure we’ll get more characters throughout, and we’ll definitely get more fights, something which was missing in this first episode, as well as transformations. I also can’t wait to see what kind of messed-up villains we get this season, as the motivations of these guys just defy all sense in a hilarious way.

Nyarlko doesn't give up on Mahiro

That doesn’t mean she’s going to stop trying…

Woot! First comment for my Beloved Nyalko-san!

I wonder if I would like to either play or run a game of Call of Cthulhu with this gang. More like another classic Teenagers from Outer Space.

I like how they went from one bit of exposition to the other with comedic moments in between. I also like how the Crawling Chaos herself kinda hints that yes, I do have 999 other forms. But why is it do you think I keep this one? Also pointing out that Lovecraft was a big old windbag that turned aliens he was just talking to into big scary monsters….Oh, that H.P. such a character.

    Good episode, great review, Taggers.

uh nyah uh nyah uh nyah! I wish that was the opening again, but it was in the first episode <3

Nyalko for the freaking win <3

I get seperated from the internet for almost a week and I find Metanorn is flooded with a horde of First Impressions. You guys are so impressive it’s downright frightening. A Tag Team post with Fosh, Highway? The pressure must be so intense you can feel it in the air bearing down on you. 🙂

Anyway, yes!! It’s finally here and it’s so good to hear Kana Asumi playing Nyaruko again. Has it really been a year since the first season? My personal anime list needs to be revised (And I made that thing at the start of Winter 2012). Of all the things it can start off with: an introduction right to viewer’s face. The best part of this anime is that it doesn’t take itself seriously. Just pure tongue in cheek humor.

Oh, man, I need to start back my intense training for the “Can you spot that reference” game. I missed almost all of those indications. The only one I caught was Nyaruko holding those OreShura mangas.

More Kuuko is what I wanted and that’s just what I got. Also, she seems to have changed. That whole “Nyaruko’s and your first times have been promised to me. You should not forget that.” could be a strong enough indication that she’s beginning to swing both ways. Fine by me, then! As for the possible trap aspect, it’s still hard to see Hasuta as a guy. Near impossible.

    • skylion says:

Good to have you back, BlackBriar. I was getting antsy. Who can I tease around here?

    • Highway says:

I caught a few other ones, like Hastur’s reference to OniAi – “You’re like a big brother to me, but if there’s love it’s ok” – and the yamanso.com upside down Amazon smile.

Kuuko’s raising the bar each time, wonder if she’ll rope Hasuta’s first time in next time.

    • HannoX says:

More Crawling Chaos insanity! I agree that it’s just about impossible to see Hasuta as male. But let’s remember these are aliens who have taken on human forms. They might not even have sexes as we know them in their basal forms. Maybe Hasuta meant to manifest as male but didn’t get it right and so ended up looking more like a girl.

Since Kuuko can’t seem to make progress with Nyaruko it looks like she’s decided to go for the harem ending. If she can snag Mahiro Nyaruko would probably come along.

      • skylion says:

…I think they have 1000 forms, one of them being human. I don’t think it’s a human suit, rather they completely changed…

    • Muir says:

Kuuko FTW!! But I NEED MORE GHUTATAN~

  3. Liza says:

So happy for the return of Nyaruko and the rest of the gang! 😀 I picked up a lot of the references but I ended up missing a bunch too.(yamanso was brilliant!) Also loved the return of the FORK OF DOOM.

    • Muir says:

Mahiro’s fork is the most dangerous weapon in the universe! >v<

      • BlackBriar says:

There needs to be a post covering anime characters using odd objects as weapons.

Here’s a few that come to mind:
        Mahiro: Fork
        Haruna (Kore wa Zombie): Chainsaw
        Hitagi Senjougahara (Bake/Nisemonogatari): Stapler
        Ayame Shaga (Ben-To): Chopsticks
        Orthros/Sawagi twins (Ben-To): Shopping Baskets
Mikoto Urabe (Nazo no Kanojo X): Scissors

        • skylion says:

          Joseph Joestar: Thread and Balls.

          • Muir says:

well a chainsaw is a legitimate weapon no? XD

Kagura (Gintama) – Umbrella (Umbrella-gun that is)
NYARUKO (How can we forget her on her own series post?) – Crowbar
            Touka (Chu2) – Ladle
Hassan (Horizon) – FRICKEN CURRY ಠ_ಠ

          • skylion says:

            Misaka Mikoto: an arcade token

The ones that caught my attention the most was the “urusai, urusai, urusai” from Shakugan no Shana, that transformation circle from Kamen Rider \o/

  7. ckuri says:

“but what about Nyaruko? Does she have other family members”: She has at least a brother, who was shown in season 1.
