I am shipping these two characters so hard right now.

Wow, talk about a flaccid episode. I mean, it’s somewhat expected that last week’s mid-season climax would be followed by a breather, and spending most of the episode teasing the Wakaba x Himawari ship for the inevitable Green x Yellow Docking (after this episode, it’s almost a foregone conclusion, unless they’re trolling) is fine, but this was dreadfully humorless. And the dreadfully bad animation didn’t help. I guess last week’s battle drained all their budget until the end game, because off-model shots and rigid animation abound. Even the battle at the end felt like A-1 was just phoning it in, with lots of reused animation and detail-free faraway shots. No real intensity or suspense in the direction, either. A great shame, because this Alone continued to evolve their designs, looking almost nothing like a Neuroi from Strike Witches. It was actually reminiscent of an Angel from Evangelion, with the fall-from-the-sky attack similar to the 10th angel Sahaqiel.
Rei gets to suffer once again, though this time, even more than other times, it seems like it wasn’t her fault, given that the Alone didn’t even enter her range before getting killed. She’s got 4 feathers left and with 3 episodes to go, and I’m putting my money on the final Alone getting powered up twice or more, just like the previous one. At the current trajectory, it’s hard to see Rei getting won over by Akane and friends until the big finish. Given the talent behind this show, I’m sure that finish will manage to top anything the show has thrown at us so far, and with all the money they saved in this episode, they should have ample funds for making that happen.
Also, is it common in Japan for middle school girls to be approached in the streets by magazines for photo shoots, without the parents’ consent or even knowledge? Or is that just a feature of this lolicon Utopia in which Vividred Operation takes place?

Nanami had us all convinced that she was the mature one of the group, but this episode has me thinking otherwise. Not that she’s immature (quite the opposite), but this episode revealed that she’s just been running away from her problems where I thought she had dealt with them. Of course, looking back, it’s quite obvious that she would be upset since she’s put so much time and effort into all of this, but again, she had me fooled.
As for Sorata’s problems… well, I would have played his fictional game at least. I’d say it was just bad luck this time instead of lack of skill, but Sorata’s currently caught in the idea that everything he does isn’t good enough. I can’t blame him on that though, since it seems that other than having two love interests with their own merits, the guy just can’t catch a break. It’s also super unfair for Sorata as well that they’re hiring Mashiro, who had nothing to really do with all of this and was only really in there to support Sorata. I can see why he’s blaming her, since she’s pretty much the epitome of talent overshadowing regular people at the moment. …Not that the girl is any more at fault for the situation than Sorata is, but you can’t deny how it looks.
Nanami has been holding everything in this whole time, while Sorata lashes out. Call me crazy, but I can’t think that either of those extremes is very healthy. Overall though, not a good episode for Sakurasou overall. Er, well, it was a good episode, just not for any of the characters. The current situation of Sakurasou? …That isn’t looking too bright either. I’m curious to see what the reaction to Mashiro leaving is though, as well as seeing if Sorata can finally reconcile with her in a way that’s satisfying.

Are you ready for some special ninja training?
Oh boy! Time for more giant boob ninjas on Metanorn! Are you excited? Just kidding I don’t think anyone gets hyped for this series, but out of the many failed episodes I actually had fun watching this time, because Hibari managed to do some REAL ninja stuff even though she was being mind-controlled at the time. I also enjoyed the bit with her joining the evil team for now, but we all know she is only doing that so she can sneak into their base and steal back the super-secret ninja scroll. I have to ask what do you think is on that scroll? How funny would it be if the whole mysterious “secret” of the scroll was learning to embrace and adapt the light and dark sides of being a ninja? I COULD seriously see them doing that as we get closer to the end of this series. Another thing I noticed the “evil” team from my perspective are not really that evil. I did enjoy how friendly Yomi got with Hibari or the special friendship she had with Haruka? I am surprised that the yuri-lovers are not raving about this series or this episode in general because damn those bath scenes and the random bondage? I bet Yagyuu will be pissed if she learns that evil girl had her hands all over Hibari…One last thing from me, it was kind of cool to see Suzune make her presence known to Kiriya, leaving me to shout OH MY GOD ABOUT DAMN TIME!

There’s nothing much that can be said about this episode except that it’s about insects insects and insects… Turning into human. Yeah, this episode is all about the Serf Maid (what’s her status again?), disguising as the Crimson Scholar, therefore taking the punishment of being a “heretic” the Crimson Scholar is supposed to get. To be honest? I was really confused about her whole existence. Like, why does she even exist? I really didn’t get it to the point where I started to get ticked off just because she was there. Then I watched this episode and understood it. She’s a backup! Eh, I mean, um, she’s someone who’s there to “replace” Crimson Scholar when she’s gone! Man, this anime is awesome. It has backups for the main characters?! All we need is the Hero’s backup now…. Ehm, putting me being mean aside, I applaud the Crimson Scholar’s endurance to go through such harsh beatings and whippings. Kudos to her too for finally finding her true self as she delivered such a powerful speech to the villagers. Once more, Maoyuu showed the power that every woman can have… Or already have? If the original Crimson Scholar showed her power through her intelligence, the non-original “Crimson Scholar” managed to swept the people with her powerful sympathetic speech that was able to lift everybody’s spirits. Both Scholars are really amazing.
Putting the awesome older Serf Maid aside, what in the world was the Winter King thinking? I mean, I can see everything making sense except Winter King’s declaration that he’s free from the church or whatever it was. Why, man, whyyy? Why not think of some other plan (though I can offer none) to get the “Crimson Scholar” off the execution ground instead of declaring the country free from the church? The country has enough problems already, so making the church as the enemy is not a good idea to end the episode. Not that I don’t like the idea since I was all “Yeahh!!!!” throughout the whole episode, but that move is just politically illogical. The church’s influence is big, and this is literally turning the entire world into the King’s enemy. Though the country is sort of independent from the Church, I’m not so sure how it’s going to go against the church’s alliance. So yeah, while it was awesome, the country is kiiinndd of in a pinch now. I can only hope that the Merchant can pull something off that can contribute to the country’s independence now.
By the way not going to touch the subject on church because I am extremely anti-religion, but somehow the Church reminds me of the Church of olden days. The ones I read in my high school books. And the Church definitely did not impress me… Until now. Anyway, I am curious about the Green/Light Spirit. She is obviously the Demon King, so what’s up with the deceased Heroes she made contact with? Does this mean that the Demon King has been repeating the same cycle again and again? Demon King’s existence is a mystery now. I hope they can reveal everything soon.

Vividred: I enjoyed the Wakaba x Himawari stuff, and I agree that it’s completely setting up a Green x Yellow docking for the finale. And yeah, the relationship stuff is a bit cheesy, but they’re middle school kids, they’re not known for being the most subtle. Himawari was pushing the bratty boundary a bit, tho, maybe a little more than Wakaba deserved for redirecting their ‘date’.
I know the “You’re really cute / pretty / attractive, would you come model for us?” cold call thing has been used in a few other anime as well. To me it always seems like a creeper scam, “Hey, hop in my van, I’ve got my picture studio in there. Hey, what does this cloth smell like?”

Sakurasou: *waaaaaaaaaahhhhhh*
This was a bit more gut punch than I was expecting. Collecting signatures: fail. Sorata’s game: fail. Nanami breakdown, Sorata breakdown, Seniors leaving. And then stacking on top of that, when you’re expecting some good news at the end… Mashiro win at Sorata’s expense. Talk about a dick move. The person who always wins wins again, this time when she’s sincerely trying to help the boy she loves, and ends up hurting him.
It’s no wonder that she interprets that as Sorata hating her, and combined with her existential threat to Sakurasou, decides she needs to leave.

Sakurasou has always done well with making the worst situations into feel good endings so far though, so hopefully this all turns around. …Hell, I’m confident it will turn around if we give it a few episodes. They did well with piling on the despair here though.

Maoyuu: It’s hard to see anything else about this episode apart from Older Sister Maid’s speech. But the Winter King made the right choice. From my perspective, the whole point of the church declaring the Crimson Scholar a heretic was to discredit her and her ideas, ideas which are moving the Winter Kingdom away from the influence of the church as they become more prosperous and self-sufficient. It’s likely that having the veil of legitimacy from the Lake Convent forestalled this happening for a year, but it was pretty much an inevitable thing.
And the thing the church fears more: having those ideas spread to other kingdoms. Rather than the old way of “Plant our one crop and Pray”, having scientific methods of agriculture – Plant this, this, and this in this manner at these times, and you will have success and not deplete your soil – will raise the wealth of the poor, which is always a bad omen for church influence.
Unfortunately for the church, their power play backfired, instead uniting the winter kingdom against them, due to the petty cruelty of their representative. And even though she was saved, it was probably a situation where a martyred Crimson Scholar would have become far more powerful.

Senran: Apart from Hibari being the worst double agent ever, not a bad episode. I actually don’t mind the story painting neither side as explicitly ‘good’ or ‘bad’, just on opposite sides. They’ve really softened up the Hebi girls and it would be nice to see them actually have their own revelations, things like Yomi realizing that it’s not all fun and games to be Ikaruga, or Homura seeing that Asuka is doing better as a ninja. The appearance of Rin with Kiriya shows that she doesn’t think there’s that much difference between the two sides.
I think you’re right that the whole moral of the series is probably going to be something like “Both sides need to be in harmony” or something like that.

Yeah I am starting to think both sides are actually good in their own way, the best example is World of Warcraft depending on which faction you join you quickly learn the horde are not all evil and the same goes for the alliance.
Yeah I just picture a yin/yang thing happening in the end that combines the schools for the greater good, but if that happens who will become the “enemy” later on? I guess there might be a 3rd faction? LOL not that I care because I really do not want another season of ninja boobs the animation.

The best thing about the show is Masuzu getting more and more exposed as someone who really wants to be Eita’s girlfriend, not a fake.

Vividred: A truly buttrific episode. Well, I guess they’re cheaper to draw than animating a fight sequence. And maybe the artists are so–ah, stimulated–by the material that they work faster than usual, another money-saver. With all the Wakaba and Himawari interaction I agree that the anime is setting up a Green x Yellow dock.
Maoyuu: This episode suffered from one of my biggest pet peeves that many anime suffer from–the hero (or in this case the disguised older sister maid) making a long, overly earnest speech while the villian just stands there letting him or her do it. The Church’s representative was a real idiot for letting her go on for so long. Couldn’t he see how the crowd was reacting? Then he compounds it by having her whipped rather than having her gagged and hustled off. Save the abuse for when there’s no one to witness it. Then he lets her continue on with her speech!
Yeah, I know, when you’ve been unchallenged for centuries and have used terror to keep people in line (torture and execution for those who question you and threatening eternal damnation for those who don’t toe your line) you get arrogant and careless. But the representative didn’t have to be THAT stupid. What kind of Church official let’s a heritic harangue the crowd when they’re being arrested? He should have cut her speech off halfway through. By that point having her gagged and dragged off towards the cage would have been enough to start a near riot and have the Winter King step forward to stop it. Then there could have been some action in this episode. The representative arrogantly refuses to release her and the crowd does riot and battle the soldiers. With the upshot being the roughly handled representative and disarmed surviving soldiers are sent packing. That would also help fire up the population for the coming war with the Church.

Senran Kagura – 09: This show is really trying to get viewers to side more with the dark than the light. From this episode alone, the dark seems to be the more accepting side, like a refugee camp while the light is seen to be the oppressive one with too high a standard to meet. Not to mention most of the Serpent girls have real world, understandable reasons for what they do.
Oh, the yuri. Don’t worry, I’m raving. I always knew Haruka was into girls and now she has Hibari to herself though I’m surprised she didn’t ask the guards to tie her up like that herself. She’s screams bonafide sadist. And that would-be yuri kiss. Why did they stop it before we could see, damn it?

Vividred Operation – 09: It’s good to see the support characters getting some longer screen time. The Wakaba x Himawari ship goes into second place after Akane x Wakaba for me. The episode was mostly slice of life style with the photo shoots and all and the Alone fight ended too quickly for me to enjoy it.
Vividred is nearing the end so I’m curious as to when the girls are going to finally find out about Rei and when and how they intend to win her over. Normally in other shows, the mysterious girl would have been revealed as an enemy already so it raises the question as to what is the studio waiting for. The feather markings on her neck are getting fewer each time which means she’s running out of time and options.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo – 21: Wow, this episode pulled on strings the entire run. The despair among the characters was overwhelming. As if Sakurasou being threatened with demolition wasn’t bad enough. There aren’t enough signatures on the petition, Sorata chances in game designing got shot down, Nanami was denied acceptance after two years of hard work. She may be mature but a person can only handle so much. I felt sympathetic toward all of them especially for Mashiro feeling that it’s all her fault and that her only choice to protect them is to leave. Somebody show some compassion towards these kids. What did do to deserve such situations?

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha – 09: The torture of the maid was hard to watch. It was too much and went too far. Using a whip on a girl is cruel, let alone obscene. However, I was impressed that used her torment as a source of motivation to give the population confidence in itself.
That Church representative was a bastard that deserved more than rocks being thrown at him. I would have loved to see the Winter King lop his head off. Labeling the scholar a heretic was a blatant attempt to retake control by taking out the one person that give hope for independance. In the end, it backfired and caused the opposite of what they hoped for.

Lot’s of folk object to the spoiler reference in the ED. To me, it was a huge appeal, cause those moments of connection are very important.
As for the shedding of blood. It’s always about that. Any story that speaks of sacrifice is going to be about that. And for my take/money, it was very well shown. Much better than any other visual medium has shown thus far.

If we’re applying an analogue of the European dark ages / pre-enlightenment to the show, then a heretic isn’t a girl, it’s a heretic. And usually the rabble would go along with what the church was saying. I didn’t think that the show went too far with the scene, I thought it was pretty authentic and justified.

Not to speak for a bunch of people who aren’t me, but I think there’s probably a ton of people watching GJ-bu. I love it, and I don’t know why, besides “it is really enjoyable”. I’m pretty sure skylion watches it. I’d even think some of the Metanorn writers watch it. But they can’t write for every show they watch, there’s just not enough time.
Also, with GJ-bu, I still think skylion’s description of it when I asked what it was about after the first episode is apt: “When I figure out what it’s about, I’ll get back to you.” It’s just a straight up slice-of-weird-life show. The characters are all great, tho, and the writing and timing just works. I mean, the primary activities through 10 episodes of the show have been:
– Kyoro brushing girls hair,
– Mao (and others) biting Kyoro
– Mori twirling whenever she shows up
– Drinking tea and eating various things
And it’s just great. I know that as a blogger, it’d be super hard to find any hook into the show for expansion or discussion. I think it’d probably be very similar to lvlln trying to write for Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb. It was a great show, but it just didn’t get much response or discussion (or really any). I think the same thing would happen with GJ-bu. The only discussion it would really foster would be a lot of “Yeah, I really like when Geri fangirls over Kyoro via whiteboard!” (which, by the way, it just sooooo precious!)
It might be a good show for a season review, and I know that I end up talking a lot about it in that kind of context. But weekly, it just wouldn’t generate the type of back and forth discussion to warrant the blogging time.

It’s a good show. Very much season review material. If it’s about anything, it’s about typical harem members reflecting key points of the MC. But it does it very well.

I was thinking about the harem aspect of the show, and it’s almost a ‘platonic harem’ show. Rather than all the girls being interested in Kyoro as a boyfriend, they’re interested in him as a representative of ‘boys’ in general. So when they’re seeking attention or reactions from Kyoro, they’re not necessarily seeking Kyoro’s attention or reaction in particular, they’re seeking the attention or reaction of boys, and Kyoro happens to be the one around. And while I think Kyoro would be happy to go out with some or all of the girls (I would say Kyoro’s order of interest would be Shion > Megumi > Mao > Kirara > Tama, but that might just be my biases), I don’t think any of the girls are really that interested in him like that (maybe Mao and Megumi are, but not really enough to get past ‘friends’ stage).
So because there’s no really overt interest in dating, the show really works around things like the hair-brushing (Confession: I find those scenes to be the most sensual thing in anime this season), “Ore-man”, and the constant teasing: “Hey, Kyoro, is it true that guys always think of themselves as attractive to girls?”

I will take the hair brushing any day over the tooth brushing, especially the way the example scenes are constructed and presented. One thing I didn’t care for about the Nisemonogatari scene was the power imbalance, something that does not exist in the GJ-bu hairbrushing scenes, even if they are played as ‘punishment’ for some of the girls, or ‘battles’, or even for the voyeristic pleasure of Mao and Shion.
Here we are keeping up a discussion of GJ-bu after I said it really wouldn’t foster a discussion. But I still think that my assessment above is accurate, in that we can do this for almost a whole season of the show, but week in and week out, we’d at best be having the same discussion.
Another thing that occurs to me about GJ-bu: It’s a great depiction of those casual and not so casual encounters that adolescents start to crave, with touching and intimacy, even if it’s not strictly within the context of dating or courting. Things like Shion’s cool hands and then she gets ‘hot’, the hair brushing, the seating arrangements around the kotatsu, even the biting. Yes, it was a long time ago for me, but I remember much more about those situations than I do about the everyday life of being a teenager.

You should definitely watch. I know I was hooked from the first episode, even without having much of an idea about what was going to be happening.
Also, I’m realizing that Mimori Suzuko is one of my favorite seiyuu, performing Shion, Umi from Love Live!, Rin in Senran Kagura, and Himawari from YuruYuri (and Himiko from Btoooom, but it’s not her fault I hated that show).
