Kotoura-san – 12 [END]

kotoura final (1)

Kotoura’s brain has run out of ESP power! She needs to recharge soon.

It is finally time to say good bye to Kotoura and her awesome friends! I had a amazing time following and blogging this series on Metanorn, but I was a bit lazy in my video creation this week and used lots of random Kotoura fan art work instead of episode screenshots and there is a series wrap up included in the video.

Final fun with Kotoura

I will miss this amazing smiling face.

Thanks for all the comments over this series! I loved experimenting with video reviews and look forward to more posts like this in the future.

    Ok!
I finally got to see the finale to Kotoura-san and I have to say that I really loved it. It was a real tearjerker and it really ended the series pretty well. I like that the president was smart enough to learn from her mistakes after the attacker fiasco and that she apologized to Kotoura. It was a really sweet scene, especially with Haruka telling her that she knew what the president had been up to the entire time.

It did seem to make her a little like a bit of a doormat though at that point, but it was still an effective scene.

I enjoyed that Kotoura finally stood up to her mother and they somehow managed to make her mother sympathetic. I can understand that being a mother is not an easy job, especially emotionally, and even though I do not support leaving your child, I think that she did what she thought was best by leaving Haruka, I just wish she hadn’t been so vindictive and verbally abusive towards her. To see them beginning to repair their relationship was nice.

Manabe and Haruka finally are a real couple and I thought that ending scene was precious.

All in all, I liked the series for what it was. This journey for Haruka was sweet and adorable. It did get a little distracted at times and sometimes boring, but I do still like it. I won’t get it on DVD or anything, but I really enjoyed it for what it was. It is my second favorite show for this season and I’ll give it a 8.5/10.

Ooooh awesome! Kotoura was a nice series even though there were a lot of tearjerker moments and the episode wrapped up lots of loose ends especially with the mother.

Yeah! Haruka x Kotoura forever I love watching them together.

Nice score and sadly I probably won’t be buying the DVD, but I am waiting to see if there are any OVA episodes coming out.

      • Irenesharda says:

Umm…Haruka and Kotoura are the same person. 😛

Her full name is Haruka Kotoura (or flip that if you want it the Japanese way…)

You might be thinking of her boyfriend, Yoshihisa Manabe.

        LOL

But yeah, Kotoura x Manabe forever!

I don’t think the show every quite lived up to it’s first cold open. That was stark, bold, and quite inventive; not the thing you expect of a “typical rom-com”. It was amazing, but how do you live up to it? As a result, the rest of the show felt a bit undercut. This isn’t entirely true thou.

I thought the best of it’s strength was the forging of that nakama. All of them got to play the best game they could with each other. And, in the end, the ESP Club became the best thing it could be: Having fun with at the expense of Haruka-chan.

Thanks for bringing the bizzle, Foshizzle!

    • Foshizzel says:

Ah yeah I guess it was quite bold on their side and probably a huge risk for that while the other stuff in the series flowed alright, but the damn criminal arc was weak and zzzz for me!

ESP club for the freaking win~

You are welcome Skylion! What do you think of the video format? Like them or not really? xD

      • skylion says:

I found that I, in much regret, only had enough time on my hands to listen/watch a few of your video reviews. So for my money, the written words works best for me.

But….if this is what you want to do and love to do…then I will try to make so more time for it. You are my Metabro, after all.

        • Foshizzel says:

@Skylion: True! I have recently started following lots of anime bloggers that do just video reviews and so far most of them are quite friendly! I guess the main goal was to spread the word of Metanorn on youtube, but yeah for the most part I have a lot of fun making them xD

Np! I try to keep them under 15 minutes for episodes and roughly 20 for a series review after the final episode.

On a point of blogging, I’m glad I’m on the same team as Fosh now because now we won’t pick the *exact same image* for leading off posts.

        • BlackBriar says:

With that said, I can already feel a MetaVerse podcast on its way with Highway participating.

And Highway, now that you’re part of the team, you can help the guys with any yuri story telling they might have up their sleeves. We need equality after the last post. 🙂

          • Highway says:

I told you I had a story in mind… but it was completely ripped off from Shoujo Sect. Plagiarism’s not good.

        • Foshizzel says:

@Highway: LOLLLLLLLLL! That is awesome xD

@BB: I know right? I can’t wait to hear Highway and Sum in the future MetaVisions or Minitalks~

  3. Highway says:

I enjoyed the show throughout, even if it never really managed to recapture the depth of emotion of the first episode. There was a lot of comedy to be had, although it started to feel like going to the well a few too many times with “Hey, Manabe’s thinking pervy thoughts and Haruka’s embarrassed.”

(Side thing to note: After the beach episode and the “Pettanko” ED, Haruka got a lot more Haruka-sized in Manabe’s fantasies…)

The sequence with Kumiko returning was handled pretty well. Haruka standing up for herself worked, and beating her mother with a pillow was a good choice, rather than the sake bottle or something. When she ducked her mother’s slap, that really was an “Awww YEAH!” moment, and then fought back. That was the perfect symbolization of “You’re my mother, but you should treat me more as an equal.” Things weren’t resolved, but it’s true there’s no hatred there.

    • skylion says:

I was very happy to see her mother’s side of things. It brought so much fruition to the plot, capturing everything that the first episode gave us.

Remember folks, when you disagree with someone you love; hit them with a pillow!

    • skylion says:

      Haruka-sized=FTW

    • Foshizzel says:

True it was really hard to recapture the first episode in terms of OH MY GOD this drama is crazy! That said I wouldn’t want eleven episodes of straight up drama and sadness the entire time…

      Yay Kotoura and Manabe <3

I was glad they wrapped that up with the mother, but it did feel a bit strange how they fixed it in the end xD

  4. Liza says:

I was actually surprised they were able to wrap up all of the plot points in this one episode. The interaction between Kotoura and her mom was so adorable and I was surprised how it wrapped itself up nicely. I even sympathized with her mom a bit, something I didn’t think would happen after seeing her abandon poor Kotoura in the first episode.

Manabe and Kotoura’s confessions to each other was so cute. Sadly poor Prez didn’t win the guy in the end though(keep fighting girl!).

A part of me is crossing my fingers for a season 2. At least there’s the manga to read!

    • Foshizzel says:

I was shocked as well and I totally expected them to have the mother’s issues drag on into a season two, but thankfully things were solved and like Highway said above this comment I like to think it wasn’t ‘fixed’, but it wasn’t static in the completely broken state anymore.

FIGHT ON PRES! YOU GOT THIS and yes Kotoura x Manabe forever <3

Part of me feels the same Liza! Honestly I would love to see another season or an OVA? Whoa there is a manga?! Damn I need to read it asap xD

  5. KLACMAN says:

well after all of it kotoura finally face her own fear the mother.

give after pillow hit, reasons probs they got, etc indeed her mom did hidden care for her just indeed her mom feel guilty.

at least they trying defrost the mom to get back together with kotoura.

all good in kotoura life is back to normal.

    • Foshizzel says:

Finally right? At least they used pillows instead of their fists to solve the problem…

      • BlackBriar says:

Using pillows suits them both. Fists, on the other hand, would have made things look ugly than it already needed to be. Kudos that Kotoura had the reflex to dodge her mother’s hand.

        • Highway says:

The dodging was awesome. That was the ultimate “I don’t need to take your crap, you loser mother!” Even more so than what followed, pushing her down and beating her into a pillow fight, that one move was the statement.

  6. BlackBriar says:

As a whole, I enjoyed Kotoura from start to finish and the ending is a nice cap off. It was upbeat and funny with a cast of lively characters. In details, its shortcomings, though minor, come from a shaky attempt to juggle drama, humor and mystery, particularly the episodes the female detective Tsukino. Sometimes, it seemed like it wasn’t the same show even though the same characters are there.

The highlight: Kotoura standing up to her mother making her understand she wasn’t the only one suffering. And the choice of confrontation was odd but it works. It’s better to have a pillow fight than a slapping contest because it would have made things unnecessarily ugly. I would’ve been sour at the reconciliation if Kumiko was forgiven just like that but didn’t because she admitted she was weak. Being wrong and stuck up wouldn’t have won any forgiveness. However, she should still be branded for leaving.

The romance was a nice touch. As opposites, Kotoura and Manabe make a nice couple. Daichi and Yuriko would be the same if he wasn’t so dense. Well, there’s not much can be done about that. Two good pairings but it’s sad Moritani ends up all alone in this. Hopefully she finds her own love interest.

I am one of the few who actually liked this anime. It fused supernatural, harem, ecchi, drama, shoujo, and slice of life into one; it actually worked. Kotoura-san became something different from the rest of the supernatural anime by focusing on the little things that are usually ignored in supernatural anime, and that is what makes Kotoura-san charming and can be easily related to the real life. People might be disappointed with it, but I think it’s perfect the way it is
