Amnesia – 11

Still a better love story than Twilight

I’ll admit it. As we get closer to the end, I teared up pretty much throughout the whole episode. No, there was nothing really to cry about, but the things Amnesia didn’t mention are kind of emotionally distressing.
Hey look, I died in a pile of schoolwork for one week and Amnesia actually got better! Maybe I should do this more often.

amnesia-00003

Oh yes sure, head out into the storm that is TRYING TO KILL YOU

Miyu|| Oh god. So not only does the heroine have to go through the same month over and over again, this time the world is trying to kill her? As if the previous worlds weren’t already bad enough (whatnot with a car nearly crashing into her every. single. episode.), this one is going all out to try to turn her into porkchopz. Ukyou really surprised me this episode with all that about how he has to die in order to let the heroine live. This has literally become nearly identical to the story of Kagerou Days (which I recommend you watch if you haven’t – theme song maybe?), where this day in August repeats over and over again, ending in the death of a girl. Her boyfriend then tries to change her fate by taking a death blow for her one day, thinking that it will end this mess, but the catch is this: IT DOESN’T – the song ends with the day starting all over again :c

Kara|| Miyu compares it to Kagerou Days, but I still like S;G if you think of it like (heavy spoilers for Steins;Gate past here… if I haven’t spoiled it for you by this point) Show ▼

…You know what, maybe Kagerou Days is more straightforward. But yeah, his insanity and desire to kill the heroine is kind of understandable now. It’s him or her. And yet, Ukyou is STILL trying to save her. Though he’s trying so hard due to certain reasons…

*Adds ‘falling into a deadly well with impossible sinking quicksand’ to the list of ways she’s nearly died*

Miyu|| At this point in time I am getting this dreadful feeling of déjà vu, because Amnesia looks like it’s about to turn tragic. Although I have no idea why the world was out to get Ukyou in the first place even before the heroine came, it doesn’t look like they’re going to get away with this without one of them dying. He was talking about how he saved the heroine once on August 1st and that triggered a series of events that was out to get her, and he has obviously been through the entire mayhem more than once already. Even before the two met, had Ukyou been suffering this fate? And if so, why?  I’m hoping for a satisfactory answer next week after having watched ~10 episodes of stammering and denseness, so let’s hope next week’s episode will be a fulfilling ending!

Kara|| Luckily for everyone involved, this whole thing is coming to a close. This won’t be repeating again, since it’s already been doing that. No, like Ukyou briefly mentioned, this it the last chance for both of them. …Which is why he’s trying oh so desperately to save her. How and why haven’t been explained yet, but this world is pretty important for the heroine (…and Ukyou) and I can’t wait for everything to be explained (since some things, like the heroine getting back some memories at the beginning and then never again seems odd). I just hope the explanation doesn’t look like it came out of nowhere since Orion hasn’t even mentioned an important person yet.

amnesia-00002

Miyu|| And also: is it just me, or is Ukyou actually the most believable and likable guy in the entire series? I mean the whole split personality thing is creepy, but I’m guessing that it was the horrible experiences that he had to go through that gave rise to his psychopath-like other personality. I’m actually rooting for them to get together now (or maybe it’s just the doomed-to-fail kind of love that I sadistically enjoy ;w;) although one  of them looks like they’re going to die in the next episode. Ukyou’s actually wholeheartedly accepting the heroine for all her clumsiness and rebelliousness and is going to whole lengths to rescue her. Now I can see why Ukyou/heroine is considered canon for the series. Come on, don’t let the most beautiful couple be ruined – this is an otome game after all, right? (Uh, so was Hatoful Boyfriend, but I rather not go there.)

Kara|| So why do I feel like the worst person in the world? Well, they don’t mention it in detail in the anime, but pretty much every other route where the heroine survives past August 26th, Ukyou dies in her place. Mostly without the heroine knowing. So every time you get a happy end, you also get the crushing feeling of know that somewhere, somehow, Ukyou probably either killed himself or he was in some situation like with the well and died. Kent’s route, you get the lovely note that some guy who ‘looked like Ukyou’ threw himself off a building on the day before and with all of the other routes, he’s barely even mentioned since the heroine is busy being happy with whatever guy she’s dating. It’s heartbreaking and even more so that the heroine has only thought of Ukyou as nothing but a suspicious scary guy the entire time.

Of course, you can’t realize this until after you do the other routes because you need to complete them in order to unlock Ukyou’s, but suddenly, every single ending of the game becomes depressing as hell. Thing is is too that Ukyou totally knows in each world that he’s going to sacrifice himself for the heroine’s happiness and where he could just go out and kill her or make her life miserable, he doesn’t. He restrains the side that wants her dead and just kind of watches over her at a distance. …Except he threw her off a building that one time, but still. He’s easily the most dedicated guy in the story and despite everything that’s happened, it’s obvious that he still cares for her.

Amnesia keeps getting better~. I told you the ending is good. We’ve learned why Ukyou is the way he is, but still haven’t quite gotten to why this all happened in the first place. They’ve been building up to an explanation fairly well though. Maybe the heroine hasn’t changed a bit since we first saw her 11 episodes ago, but at least we have constant peril to keep us interested. …All I can say is that the heroine had better forgive the guy. I can’t see her not forgiving him since that would mean that she had a personality hidden in there somewhere, but then again, who knows.

I never thought I’d say this but, le gasp: I’m looking forward to the next episode! Both parts equally because the plot is finally getting exciting, and also because I’m pretty tired of the heroine soon and I need her gone from my weekly schedule, but this is a new high for Amnesia. At first I thought it was a reprint of Madoka – you know, where the poor guy has to go back in time over and over again and try to save his loved one from impending doom? But it seems like it isn’t quite that. I’m enjoying how the big “mystery” is unraveling now and I hope next week’s episode won’t be too sad – let’s hope no one dies, both Psycho Pass and Shinsekai Yori are making me depressed enough already.

I was already a huge fan of Ukyou and this episode just sealed the deal that my favorite pairing is Ukyou/Heroine. It was heartbreaking when he called her during the storm and said his goodbyes. T_T Stop it Ukyou. Stop.

I don’t know if I was reading too much into it but did the Heroine have a bit more personality in this episode? It felt like, to me, that she was doing more to be with Ukyou than any of the other guys but it might just be me as an Ukyou fangirl. Haha.

    • Karakuri says:

Uhh if anything, I’d say she’s more driven than usual in this world. I can’t say that she acted more emotionally attached here, but at least she went out of her way for him, so maybe that counts as affection.

Still a better love story than Twilight

That’s for sure! I will take nearly anything over that pile of “vampire” vomit.

Anyway, I have to say that I cannot believe it but…I actually cried on an episode of freaking Amnesia!

    Ukyo’s scenes above all the other boys are the most heartbreaking. That scene on the bridge where he was telling her how he lost her so many times in so many worlds, had me in tears. ;_;
In his route, he hasn’t even really gone out with Heroine, he’s spent most of his time with her trying to keep her safe, even if he has to do that by phone. He is by far the most 3-dimensional character and he some how has even drawn out Heroine.

I honestly think this she has talked more in this episode than in the entirety of the series!

I don’t quite understand why both he and she cannot both live at the same time in the same world, or why one of them has to die. However, I think I am beginning to understand the dark and light sides of Ukyo. He seems to have that classic case of a great psychologically-scarring incident (most likely the one at the well) cause him to develop a very aggressive, angry, yet protective split personality that will protect him at all costs, even if it is against the gentler Ukyo’s wishes. It’s almost a Jekyll/Hyde problem we have her. The “Hyde” side of Ukyo want to live above all things, and doesn’t care what it takes. The “Jekyll” side of him is willing to die if it will allow Heroine to live.

Honestly, I like BOTH personalities. Yeah, Psycho Ukyo is well…a psycho, but he just seems to want to protect himself. And if Heroine ever gets accosted by any punks on the street, I’d rather have that side of him come out to defend her than the meek side. When those thieves were holding him up in the park, my first thought was, “You know, NOW would be a good time for your evil side to come out.”
In fact, if we could just get rid of the “killing you” inclination he seems to have, he would be an excellent boyfriend and lover. One side is caring and gentle, the other side is fierce and likes things rough. ^_~

And lastly, drab, monotone Waka was hilarious!

    • Karakuri says:

      Yay! Someone else who cried!

An explanation as to why they can’t be in the same world should be coming out in the next episode. As for Ukyou… yeah. He describes a few of them in the game (like being a bystander as a psychopath stabbed people with a knife), but it seems like the poor guy has been thorough a LOT.

LOL yeah, I was thinking about that too when those guys were cornering Ukyou. …That would have been great to see actually. Ahahaha

Drab Waka? …Was he really that drab and monotone? I admit to not paying attention.

      • Irenesharda says:

Look at it again. He does this whole hilarious monotone monologue about how he had to clean up the shop after the water pipe burst. Kent and Ikki end up talking over him to each other about opening the shop, even as he’s still droning on. Waka’s been looking drab since last episode at the start of this route, when he gave Heroine the sign to hang up.

  3. Gecko says:

Ukyo is definitely the most likeable and the most believable. The other boys got nothing on him. Although I’m not really counting his psycho side in the likeable portion, but his nice personality is well, nice. Obviously his nice personality could be useless if he can’t protect her from something, but considering he’s been dying quite a few times for her in the other routes, that’s pretty good. I mean, he didn’t ask for any credit there. That usually leans to the “real love” category when one person sacrifices him/herself for the other without any credit or recognition.
The bridge scene was sad, although I was expecting him to jump off the bridge right there so she could live on, and then she would try to find him, ect, wild goose chase. Thank goodness we’ve come to the climax in the rain, crazy Ukyo against heroine.
Maybe she could have a name already, gosh, I’m sick of calling her “heroine”. She’s gotten a personality, however weak it may be compared to other characters, and so she deserves a name.

    • Irenesharda says:

You know, we could just name her something like “Nanashi” from the movie Sword of the Stranger. It’s a name that means “nameless”. ;P

      • D-LaN says:

Or we can just call with whtever name we come up with XD

    • Karakuri says:

I actually liked most of the side characters better than the ones you could date to be honest (minus Ukyou, who’s in a league of his own). OTL I don’t remember if it was in the game or here, but he does have this one line that was something along the lines of “I love you even more than myself”, which pretty much says it all. I can’t see this being anything other than “real love” to be honest. He’s done waaaay too much for the heroine.

That bridge scene was really emotional. …But yeah, I’ve actually kind of gotten used to the heroine being nameless to be honest. In VNs they usually replace the main character’s name with “anata” or “kimi” or something, so it’s not that big of a change audio-wise. …Though it is really awkward when trying to talk about it like now.

  4. JapanInspired says:

Wow, this episode was really something.
Sorry, but I guess, to me it was a bit…flat? Although the scene with the bridge was amazing. And I wonder if it was a hint that the Heroine decided to get out of the house and do at least something for Ukyo, because in other episodes she didn’t really have that “I just have to”.
Can’t wait to see the explanation of what-the-hell-happened-in-the-beggining thing. As Karakuri-san said, we still have some odd things unexplained. And if they don’t cover them, I think I’m going to flip my table.

    • Karakuri says:

Hmmm. I kind of see where you’re coming from. I was playing the route along with this final arc and this definitely has less build up compared to the game.

…I’m afraid that the ending will come out of nowhere though since there has been absolutely NO mentions about deities and what they can do. Looks like you-know-who is just going to be a deus ex machina character.

      • D-LaN says:

Oh well, at least the complaints won’t reach the levels of ANN/RC complains. God I hate these communities.

      • JapanInspired says:

Heh, guess so. And Ukyo’s route was the best. I hope people won’t hate the game by looking at the anime. It’s quite hard to make an otome game adaptation good, especially with only 12 episodes.

Oh, I didn’t even notice that, did Orion really skip the part about Niiru? That’s sad. I hope they won’t do something horrible as erase the character.

Come on, last episode! Only 2 days left, I have really high hopes for you.

  5. D-LaN says:

It still amuses me tht ppl enjoys taking jabs at Twilight lol.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but BEST BOYFRIEND OF AMNESIA. (Forgive me, Kent & Orion) Ukyou is waaayyyyy better than Toma even though half of him is a psycho killer ==; Cause I FEEEEELL (XD) for Ukyo instead of NOPENOPENOPE lol. (You hearing tht, Toma?) God knows how many times he died for Missus Amnesiac tht is enough to form another personality tht is out to kill her (Wait, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia Yuko comes to mind….) Plz don’t die next week, Ukyo *prays*

Missus Amnesiac, can you please pour some points into your INT stat? I’m glad tht she finally have some semblance of personality and got more proactive, but she still as dumb as ever. Ukyo said not to trust him, gurl *facepalms*

Now I just hope the series will have a good ending *prays*

    • Liza says:

*totally read the “cause I feel” part in singing* XD

I’m really hoping for a good ending too. Please get a happy ending you two!

    • Karakuri says:

Lolol Miyu gets full credit for the Twilight jab. I’m pretty sure I would have provided a less amusing pun or something xD

Hey now. I just played an ending where Toma finally kills the annoying fan girls. That should count for something. xD But yeah, Ukyou is by far the best character. They didn’t bother mentioning half of the times Ukyou saves the heroine in this world alone, but judging from how easily he stops the heroine from dying, he’s been through this hundreds, if not thousands of times.

GOOD ENDING GOOO!!! …I don’t know what I’ll do if this doesn’t get a good ending.

      • Irenesharda says:

OMG, have you ever seen this? Ukyo might know a little too much about the Heroine, thanks to all the different times he’s been through this.

  6. BlackBriar says:

Nice one. What Amnesia and The Twilight Saga have in common are doormat female leads who develop a genuine personality only towards the end of the show.

Other than Ukyo being a fruit cake because of his split personality, I like his route more than the others. I hope there’s a solid reson for the world trying to kill her and that his psycho side is conveniently doing what it wants.
