Meat sports 2013. Be there!

Time for more crazy fun with the cast of Haganai! Last week it seemed to just focus on Yozora’s progression or maybe it was a reminder that she needs to stop being so bitchy and learn to actually make some friends? Not to mention the club members might learn the fact that she is Kodaka’s childhood friend from the past…So, what are you thinking this week, Kara?
What am I thinking? Uhhh… Not much. The childhood friend thing was completely blown over this week despite the cliff hanger in the last episode. I don’t know why, but I was expecting lasting character development and life lessons learned. …Silly me.

Tsundere or moe maids?!

HaganaiNEXT (6)

Rika-“It’s not like I wanted to get dressed up for you or anything… bakaaaa!”           Kodaka-“Uh what?”

HaganaiNEXT (8)

Sena-“I love you so much, master!”                 Kodaka-“I don’t like this…someone help me.”

HaganaiNEXT (10)

Yozora-“Uhhh I just wanted to clean the room…yeah…that!”            Kodaka-“Suuureeeeee you do.”

For the past few episodes we have hinted at the popular subject of maids, like the whole reveal around Yukimura and how she ditched the maid look for a butler uniform? I guess you could say Yozora has a thing for dressing up Yukimura, but we hit more on that subject later in the episode after Kodaka tries to get everyone to participate in a school festival. However, Sena and a few other club members want to try running their own café? And what does every café inspired club need? Maids and waiters of course, which brings us to Rika who wants to show everyone she has what it takes to be a maid! Then again her idea of a maid was to act bitchy aka act like a hardcore Tsundere. I will admit I was laughing my ass off the entire time while she was being mean towards Kodaka because every week Rika does something random and hilarious that I find amusing! That said we have Sena who doesn’t like to be shown up so she also becomes a maid, but she was a moe maid rather than bitchy like Rika was until Yozora started to make fun of her ruining the fun for EVERYONE. I did find it kind of funny that Yozora tried on the maid outfit after everyone left? The look on Kodaka’s face and Yozora’s face was priceless! I swear that was one of the best reactions ever.

So which maid did you like more? Moe Sena, tsundere Rika or shy Yozora?

More not-friendships

HaganaiNEXT (4)

Yozora-“As of today we will become super pirate ninjas!”         Sena-“That sounds like a terrible idea.”

HaganaiNEXT (11)

Sena just wants to hug Kobato so badly right now.

Maids aside this episode (screw tsundere, Rika was pure tsun. …and it was hilarious), the characters are all frustrating me. OTL Sena is just so gullible, and Yozora totally plays on that. Sometimes that chemistry works for me. This week it didn’t. To finish Sena’s thoughts this episode that she was yelling at Yozora, she was most likely a bit happy at the fact that Yozora knew so much about her (or at least could ‘psychically determine’ so much about her). You know, kind of like a friend would. Now, I’m putting the blame on both of them this time since Sena really needs to start catching on about these things and Yozora needs to hold back. But really, watching them go like this every episode is becoming a bit tiresome. I agree with Fosh’s sentiments about the two of them resolving their differences soon, but that probably won’t happen since I think we’re just past halfway for the novels. Sigh.

I guess I should also mention this shortly, but that whole point about Yozora and Kodaka being childhood friends was important for a minute and then… completely ignored. I was expecting something bigger. Though to be fair, there’s nothing any of the other girls can really do about the situation and Kodaka and Yozora obviously aren’t closer because of it, so maybe it’s something that’s just better to accept and move on from.

Fun with Sena and Rika

HaganaiNEXT (3)

The cow sound effects were so fitting in this short scene.

HaganaiNEXT (5)

Rika-“Bitch, don’t make me jump over this table! I WILL DO IT!”                  Kodaka-“……”

HaganaiNEXT (9)

Hnnnggggg Sena maid for the win.

HaganaiNEXT (7)

No one can win that ultimate challenge.

End thoughts

Interesting episode this week even though I assumed the sixth episode would be centered around a swimming pool or a tropical beach setting because those episodes seem to pop up a lot in the middle of any anime series, but for the most part the episode followed the subject of club activities and maids! LOTS AND LOTS OF MAIDS! I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see more of Yozora as a maid, but I will admit that she was kind of cute and there was that one line from Yukimura that shocked me! She actually cursed at Sena? I was like whoa! I wonder if Yukimura has been hanging around Rika after school, that aside there was only one moment that hinted at possible drama between Sena and Yozora because she got in trouble again at school. Thankfully nothing serious happened even though part of me wants to see the two of them resolve their problems! I was happy that Kobato was around to calm things down even though it did ruin the chance for something amazing for the story. Last thing to mention I guess everyone is perfectly alright that Yozora and Kodaka were childhood friends? I was expecting some kind of reaction from them, but nope it seems that everyone is perfectly fine with it.

Pfft ahaha. Kodaka might not be much more than the voice of reason, but he just gets these great reactions from time to time. Like when he found Yozora secretly dressing up as a maid and then slowly backed out of the room. That didn’t even need dialogue to be funny. Anyways, I’m still switching between thinking this show is hilarious and sitting there thinking how awkward the show is because everyone is acting really immaturely. There are hits and there are definite misses and while I’ll find one point of the characters acting out funny, I’ll find it annoying in a different situation. Oh well, I’ll stick through this with hopes that something interesting will happen during the cultural festival. Oh and Kobato’s birthday should be good~.

well at it’s same usual give whole cat out bag of kodaka & yozora past is mention.

yep back to same doing sure maids, fortune telling & yea meat “wanting” on kobato indeed just the same.

  2. Highway says:

I don’t really have too much problem with them acting immaturely. At best, they’re 16-17 year olds (Kodaka, Yozora, and Sena are all 2nd years, and the show moves pretty slow, since we’re only to fall of the same year the show started), and on top of that they’re people who haven’t had a lot of other people around as friends.

I think the thing with Kodaka and Yozora as osananajimi was more significant than the time it seemed to take, because Yozora used the opportunity to basically claim a victory, saying outright that they were friends, and everyone else ended up trying that word on. And that gets back to the idea that all of them so convinced they are bad at making friends that they don’t have any.

I think Yukimura’s exclamation may be the first indication that she is perhaps refocusing on being a girl rather than a boy, in that she’s jealous of Sena’s body (although Cutiemura’s always been jealous of Kodaka’s reactions to other girls).

And again, I really like the movement that Yozora’s making as a person. I see her as getting there: She’s to the point now where she realizes *after* she’s gone too far and regrets it. Before she didn’t care, but now she does. She’s actually pretty upset that she made Sena unhappy, and not just because it made her look bad in front of Kodaka. And as much as Sena craves Yozora’s approval (and has since the middle of the first season), Yozora’s now visibly disappointed to not have Sena’s approval. And she’s obviously happy when Sena’s spirits rise after seeing Kobato, as if she’s happy that Sena’s happy.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I guess they are quite young and since this is anime I never really think about age all that much for anime characters and I agree we haven’t really seen the club members with any of the other students…

I can totally see Yozora taking it as a victory over the other club members.

Yukimura’s f bomb caught me off guard but it was so hilarious! Maybe you are onto something with the whole her thinking more like a girl lately.

Yozora probably was like hmmmmm this isn’t good…thankfully Kobato was around or things would have turned bad very fast! Now she has to runaway from the grip of Sena next week.

  3. BlackBriar says:

A maid episode is welcomed anytime. Wow, I’m glad I’m not in Kodaka’s place taking such physical and verbal abuse from a possible multiple personality maid. Rika did her performance a little too well to the point I started thinking she was serious. And like Kodaka said, she’s getting a bit foul mouthed. With such aggression, she could pass for an employee in Saraswati’s maid cafe in Kore wa Zombie.

Sena for best maid temptress!! Innocent personality with a well endowed body makes for an extremely lewd maid and it’s no wonder Rika called it Western porn but unexpected when Yukimura dropped the F bomb. With her picking things up from her perverted butler, I shouldn’t be surprised.

Yozora is the biggest tsundere around because she always contradicts herself. She always shoots down ideas that are considered popular only to try them out behind everyone’s backs. I think one day when she tries to deny something again, no one will take her response at face value. And Sena makes gullible an understatement. You’d think she’d learn not to take advice from Yozora after that hair heap scenario.

    • Restia says:

Yes! Saras the maid is awesome~ XD

      Haganai 2 = Haganai x3 Comedy & “F*ck.”
I didn’t think Yozora would be tsundere, but it fits fine~ especially with her personality getting more appealing this season.

gah! Spammy got my comment! What speed!

    • Highway says:

I think it was Rika’s chance to let some frustrations about Kodaka out. She’s normally not super-reserved, but is really frustrated by his utter refusal to see her as a girl or acknowledge her as a friend, no matter how many hints she drops, even when she outright says she wants him. So she took her chance with the ‘cosplay’ scenario to vent on him in character, with presumably less lasting effects. So it was serious, but it was also rare.

Sena’s ‘performance’ I think comes right out of the otaku she is.

And yeah, her gullibility is classic. It’s not that she’s stupid, though. It’s much more that she wants Yozora’s approval and friendship, and I think Yozora’s finally catching on to that.

    • Foshizzel says:

Hooray for the awesome maids of Haganai and Rika was the best maid of all time! Even though she turned more bitchy towards Kodaka, but that is a tsundere character for you~

I died laughing when Yukimura dropped that F bomb out of nowhere! I guess she is a little bit jealous over Sena’s figure? Like Highway said maybe she is feeling more like a girl lately or it was a random outburst.

Sena needs help in the brains department >.>

  4. Restia says:

Season 2 is 3x as funny as the former! XD
I look forward to Haganai as a comedy series each week now!

Ahhhhhhh I wanted Sena and Yozora to be buddies~ Sena was totally up for it, but Yozora is still neglecting their yuri friendship.

The next episode shall be full of win! Reisis V. Felicity Sumeragi returns!! KOBATOO~

    “Fuck.”
    – Yukimura

    • Foshizzel says:

      Hell yea!

Yeah same I look forward to the moment when Sena and Yozora actually become friends, but I don’t think that will ever happen in a million years >.< I can't wait to hear Sena call Kobato cute x 50000 times! I am curious to see what she bought for her bday... Best Yukimura quote! It was so random and out of character for her, but I agree with Highway maybe she is feeling more "girly" lately especially since everyone knows she is really a girl? Either that or she has been hanging with Rika after school hahaha

      • Restia says:

I just realized, Yukimura is pretty similar to Kyubei (Gintama)

okay not really, but they have some vital points shared

        1) Acts/Think they’re a boy due to Family Issues

        2) Continues to dress masculine, even after realizing/knowing they’re a girl

        3) Determination/Samurai Code lol

Also a quote from younger Kyubei
Kyubei – “Father said they’ll grow when I get older”
        Otae – “They won’t”

and when Maria asked why Yukimura didn’t have “one” she replied that her’s hadn’t “grown” yet lol

  5. edo says:

I think yozora was a cosplayer in the past.. there are some hints ( and the maid uniform belongs to her)

    • Restia says:

that would certainly be interesting.. fufufu If Yozora does have that kind of secret, I think she and Sena could get closer as friends, since Niku visited a maid-cafe, plays galgames and such.

Why do I feel like I’m on a speculation thread because of this post? lol

    • BlackBriar says:

Yozora hid her true gender from Kodaka when they were kids up until the moment they seperated so being a (former) cosplayer could be another of her many secrets.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I am thinking the same thing…also Rika seems to be a fan of dressing up and playing different “roles”

    • Highway says:

I don’t know about a cosplayer. I think it’s more that Yozora is just very insecure, and it’s far more comfortable for her to put on a facade than be authentic, and perhaps face criticism of her true nature.

Is it just me or the episode titles parody of light novels.

Episode 1 My Youth is Wrong as I Expected. Parody-My youth romantic comedy is wrong as I expected.

Episode 3 My Little Sisters are So Cute- Obviously Ore na imouto

This episode- Unbreakable Weird Girl- Parody -Kikou Shoujo wa Kizutsukanai

Net week- As Long As There’s Love, It Doesn’t Matter If I Get More Sisters, Right? Parody- Oniichan dakedo Ai sae Areba Kankeinai yo ne!.

    • Highway says:

Yep, they’re listed on TV Tropes under Idiosyncratic Episode Naming.

    • malice says:

      that’s the intention. 😐

    • BlackBriar says:

That’s part of the trend of this anime. Last episode, they did a parody with clips from Mayo Chiki!

      • belatkuro says:

I explained it last week but that parody of Mayo Chiki was also in the novels and fully intentional, as both LNs are being published in the same imprint(MF Bunko J).

The episode titles are the anime staff probably having fun with them. I’m not sure what the 2nd episode title is parodying but I do know that it’s a chapter title in vol4 of the LN of Haganai, “Homoge Club”

    • Restia says:

lol I thought they sounded familiar! XD wowww

    • Foshizzel says:

Haganai for best reference anime of 2013!? Well maybe…there is another season of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san~

      • BlackBriar says:

Too early to call for best reference anime of 2013. Sadly, the year just started. We got to take it slow. Though Nyaruko is going to blow Haganai out of the water. Last season’s references were overwhelming.

  8. malice says:

    this pacing is getting absurd.

    • Foshizzel says:

True the pacing is very strange right now! That and there really seems to be little to no “story” right now which is the same problem S1 had at the start >.>

I hope we discover more with Kodaka x Yozora soon! We only have six more episodes left!

      • belatkuro says:

For reference to the pacing, we just covered 5 chapters of volume 6 in this episode(out of 11). We’ll probably finish the volume next time.
Oh and we started the second season on the 3rd chapter of volume 4.
Talk about burning through the source material.

        • Karakuri says:

Ah, see this is good to know. Maybe we’ll catch up to the current one in the rest of season 2. ….But wow, not an awful lot happened in the past 2 or so novels.

    • Karakuri says:

I’m not entirely sure what you meant by this (if you meant that we’re burning through novels or if it’s the fact that nothing is happening… or something else entirely), but I have to say that I hope that something happens plot-wise soon… Maybe they’re building up to something bigger, but at the moment, nothing is really happening.

    • BlackBriar says:

I think the pacing is doing good. There aren’t any time skips to ruin the story. If anything, the studio is being very careful so Kodaka and Yozora can develop properly.

    • Highway says:

Yeah, my opinion is that it’s actually going really well, about perfect for this type of show. There really isn’t any ‘plot’ to happen, since the end goal of the show isn’t “The Rinjin-bu saved the day” or anything like that (like, say, Robotics;Notes or Love Live!). What the show has been doing is telling stories that show the character development of all the cast members (well, except Maria who is still marooned outside cleaning the planting beds as punishment) as they relate to each other and to Kodaka.

Really, the only ‘story’ that there is to be building to is “Is Kodaka going to kiss Yozora or Sena?” and that’s moving along just fine.
