First Impression – Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb

Yuno you’ve been looking forward to the return of widefaces!

Fall’s often a more hectic season than Summer, and I haven’t had time to check out the 1st episode of every show I wanted, but Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb is one that I can make time for. I haven’t made it a secret that I’m a big fan of Shaft, and the Hidamari Sketch series, the only cute-girls-doing-cute-things anime I’ve liked, is a mjaor reason why. There’s just no way not to feel happy watching these girls’ widefaced, bright colored misadventures. That said, since there is no plot or real development in the show, my posts will just consist of me pointing out bits of the episode I found particularly funny. Excuse my lazy post, and I hope you enjoyed this one as much as I did.

I actually felt that the opening was lacking the usual pop and energy of Hidamari Sketch openings, until this moment, when Yuno turned everything into color. I guess that’s what they were going for.

I love the fact that this is a legit screenshot of this show. That is all.

Shaft wasn’t shy about using the show’s trademark super-deformed look early and often. Somehow I can’t help but feel happy when seeing it.

This gag with the hat was just about perfect. I enjoy these meta-games a bit too much, but I loved how the all-black made it look like a part of the art, emphasizing her face. The chestnut/sea urchin joke was just icing on the cake. Miyu Matsuki really excels with her performance.

I do hope that Natsume spits it out one day. Her tsundere-with-a-crush act is actually endearing. Perhaps because this is a series that’s just too light hearted for an actual relationship? Also, nice walk.

Miyako so often just drops these comments that get right under another character’s skin. The extra sting or bite to the humor add so much to the show.

Of course, if Yoshinoya mentions a costume, you know she’s gonna wear it and show it to you at some point. She always looks good, but this is particularly fetching; the way it droops on her matches her emotion.

Wow. This gag was so predictable but so good. Oh, poor Sae. The animation had just enough frames, just one showing just how bad she was having it.

Miyako’s boundless energy and optimism is infectious. I can’t imagine not having fun around her.

In contrast to the opening, the ending sequence felt a lot more energetic and colorful than I remembered the other ones being. Marble’s song was still a joy, and those kimonos are something else. They need to be cosplayed.

So what can I say? This is the Hidamari Sketch I know and love. I was grinning continually throughout the episode, and I burst out laughing at quite a few parts. Seeing Miyako being herself again was a joy. Kana Asumi has accomplished quite a bit since she first played Yuno over 4 years ago, but she still plays that lovable diminutive tryhard so well. Her trying to be the upperclassman was sickeningly sweet, and I mean that in the best possible way. The only character I don’t care for is Nazuna, which should tell you something given the rabid Chiaki Omigawa fan I am. Her talent is wasted on someone who bursts out into tears at the slightest awkwardness during conversation. Yuno has just the right amount of shyness to be cute. Nazuna is just annoying. It was nice to hear Yuko Goto back at work as Hiro. I’ve been a fan of hers since 2006’s (what else?) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I wish her good health.

Is this a series one can pick up without watching the precursors? Or would I be totally lost if I tried that?

    • lvlln says:

You certainly can. Since there’s no plot, you just need to pick up on the premise and learn the characters, which shouldn’t be difficult. However, you should watch the precursors.

      • Mikeski says:

Not only is there no plot, the episodes aren’t in chronological order.

The episode that shows the original four characters meeting is the first episode… of the second season.

During the first episode of the first season, Yuno makes an offhand comment about something they did “last summer”… and that’s shown in the second episode.

But yes, watch them all, in whatever order you want.

        • lvlln says:

The 1st 2 seasons are non-chronological, but the 3rd one is, and it looks like this one will be, too.

          • Mikeski says:

Heh, there ya go. I didn’t notice the 3rd season was in order because it didn’t matter. 🙂

Yes Hidamari Sketch is back. One of those shows that brings a grin to your face.

Well, I just gave a horrible comment to BTOOM!. And here we can see a reason why. Action anime can suck it for all I care; I loves me some Hidamari.

I am doomed to love the fuwa fuwa.

This has nearly everything I need to relax and enjoy myself with. Maybe a mildly drunk sensei…no wait…..it kinda has that already.
