Haiyore Nyaruko-san – 08

And there is a Kuuko in your closet with Hastur!

Welcome back to another thrilling and hilarious episode review! I have to say the last few episodes haven’t been as funny for me personally. But I did find a few things that managed to crack me up in the end; however, with this episode I have my fingers crossed for some laughter and of course the usual references to watch out for.

This episode follows Mahiro and the others getting sucked into the game world.

Video game worlds are amazing

Nyaruko-“Hmmmm is your favorite color pink ,Mahiro?”                 Mahrio-“…pssh…no…maybe.”

Hastur-“Maybe you shouldn’t hit the sucked into game world button.”          Mahiro-“Now you tell me!”

Hastur-“Yo dawg, let us do manly things like basketball without shirts.”              Mahiro-“Are you feeling alright?”

Anime and video games always match up nicely, don’t they? I mean we have series based off games with every Tales game release and on the flip side there are a few series of anime out there with the whole theme of getting stuck in a video game for their story, but the only one that comes to my mind currently is .hack series and Sword Art Online for the upcoming summer anime season. In the world of Haiyore, we already know the creators of this series are big time videogame nuts! I mean we had those parodies based around the Xbox and PS3, but in this episode Mahiro, Kuuko, Hastur, Nyaruko and Tamao have all been sucked into game world or a dating game world called doki doki high school…good luck with that Mahiro; however the only way to leave that world is for our main character to choose one of the four girls and achieve the good ending to escape.

Hastur versus Nyaruko versus Kuuko versus Tamao!?

Yes these four girls have a battle royal through the entire episode as they try to make Mahiro trigger their individual flags to reach their good endings, but things fly fast for Mahiro as he jumps from scene to scene avoiding some dangerous encounters with everyone. Like Kuuko attempting to cut him in half, Hastur trying to jump him in the nurse’s office, Nyaruko’s failed concert and finally Tamao locking Mahiro in the gym equipment shed so they can be alone.

Round two!

Which one do you choose for your personal good ending?

So picture yourself as Mahiro for a moment and now you HAVE to choose only one girl to escape this screwed up game world! Who would you aim for? The crazy yet hyper Nyaruko-san, confused Shouta Hastur, Yuri-tastic Kuuko-chan or maybe Tamao? The possibilities are in your hands now readers, so let me know who you would like to end up with out of those four or maybe you have your eyes on someone like Ruuhii or possibly Yoriko? Of course, you can avoid those nasty incest routes for this question.

Reference time once again

All the best reference material you could ever want and more!

This week we are finally back to this old gimmick of spot the reference and boy there are a lot I managed to find on my own, but they were relatively easy like the World that god only knows thanks to the comment “I can see the ending.” Complete with glasses! Next up every poke at Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu from Endless Eight, the sword pull from Kuuko’s skirt, Nyaruko in a bunny suit with a golden guitar and then they jumped right into Working!! because Kana Asumi voices Popura as well as Nyaruko-san, but we know that already right? And finally they had some fighting game themed fun with Hastur as Bridget from Guilty Gear, Nyaruko as Pai Chan from Virtural fighter and Kuuko as Mai Shiranui from King of fighters. I could only spot Hastur and Kuuko’s outfits because I played those games before, but I did look up Nyaruko’s thanks to the Nyaruko reference blog.

Extra fun with Nyaruko-san!

Kuuko-“Let’s experiment with this ship…”          Nyaruko-“Noooooo!! I want to sail off with Mahiro!”

Hastur showing Mahiro some service…

Mahiro-“No…just…no…”                Nyaruko-“Damn, and it was going to rock your world.”

Hnnnggg Nyaruko’s face is so cuteoooo!!

Nyaruko-“Time to set this scene for hot mouth to mouth action!”               Mahiro-“…why…me…”

End thoughts

I was happy to see Hairyore Nyaruko-san return to the whole parody level I grew to love, but yeah I know they are diving hardcore into the romance side of things with Mahiro and Nyaruko. Just like Ano Natsu, it is obvious to everyone who ends up with whom or will that even happen? I know this series loves to troll so I fully expect some random “Oh we were just kidding” style of a true ending for our main characters. For some reason if they did decide to do such a thing, part of me would be perfectly fine or would that make you angry?! After all I can easily see them throwing out another season of this, but I think they have used up their supply of reference materials.

So, what else was fun and exciting this time? I guess it was hilarious to see Hastur acting more “boy-ish” or failing at it! I just remember laughing for a bit as I thought about Rie Kugimiya voicing a guy, but if you think about it most of her tsundere girls are a bit tomboyish so I guess it fits somehow? Anyway I am glad to see the jokes returning and all the parody stuffs again versus all that dull romance drama for now…

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! I wanted a harem ending…. T_T

      …so did I…

Damnit Skylion, I thought you of all people would point out that the “stats” Nyaruko, Hastur, and Cthuuko had in the fighting game segment were lifted DIRECTLY from the Great Old Ones/Outer Gods chapter of the 6th Edition Call of Cthulhu rulebook.

        • skylion says:

What can I say? Hasta dropped a Bridget on me….

Besides, I’m one of them hammy actor type gamers….

There is still hope! Hang in there <3

I don’t think it was even possible to get a harem end in the Tokimeki Memorial games, and this episode was spoofing the first one. That one in particular had a hilarious “relationship bomb” mechanic, where you pretty much HAD to stick to one girl, as if you fooled around with the other girls depth-bombed your chances with your “main”, which chain-reactioned to all the other choices. Brutal.

One of the best episodes yet. I already know Nyaruko will eventually have Mahiro. I agree it does feel a bit like Ano Natsu. The only difference is that it isn’t a love circle where they have feelings for one person but it just passes on to the next person.

I saw the reference blog. Whoa, what an overload!! But I noticed some for myself. When I saw the game Mahiro was holding, I took as a GBA system. I thought the fight Nyaruko, Kuko and Hatsur was from Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter or Tekken. Yoichi’s information scene maybe from final Fantasy.

Kuko continues her yuri rampage. She’s becoming a lot fiercer with her determination to catch Nyaruko. That’s a bad sign. I freaked when she pulled that sword. I was like “Where the hell did that come from?”.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep! I loved this episode thankfully they brought back the whole parody/reference mode we all have grown to like and yeah while it might not be 100% Ano Natsu it has been giving me those feelings lately…

Yeah that blogger knows his stuff ahahah every episode there are tons of stuff from other series and lots of old school thrown in as well. Yeah I busted out laughing when I saw Hastur’s outfit from Guilty Gear! Which is perfect cause the original character is a trap >.>

I always die laughing watching Kuuko get close to Nyaruko and then she gets thrown off or kicked away…yes! THAT SWORD! LOLOLOL The skirts in Haiyoure Nyaruko-san are always so magical.

Cthuko and Hasta in the Closet? Bad Bad Bad Fosh, no donut for you. Both of them are already out of the closet. You bad boy, you….

Remember, Rie Kugimiya played Ed’s brother in Full Metal Alchemist, so she’s got cred when it comes to playing boys.

I never expected this show to get so deep into romance. It works fine when used to enhance the slapstick reference humor, but I don’t want it to take center stage. Fortunately, this episode had plenty of the wacky comedy this show is known for. Loved it when Nyaruko referenced Haruhi’s God Knows scene, pointing out its great key frames which still look amazing today, 6 years later.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep! You are correct I completely forgot about that role so I guess she isn’t completely brand new to voicing boys xD

Yeah I was not expecting such things either from a comedy series, but yeah I agree toss in some slapstick and it suddenly becomes quite hilarious.

Yeah I was happy to see all the Haruhi references especially the endless eight comment and of course the God Knows scene!

Remember the funny thing here being her voicing a deredere shouta, the total opposite of a tsundere loli. I find that fact funny by itself.

    • Foshizzel says:

YES! That is perfect a deredere Shouta it fits perfectly for Rie.

    • skylion says:

I have to interject here: Eri Kitamura is doing a bang up job voice Mahiro-san. Take her three best character (IMO) Rin from Kodomo no Jikan, Karen for the Monogatari franchise, and Ami-chan from Toradora. There is a connection there. Mahiro is breaking that mold, and not just because she is voice a male lead.

  6. Mikoto says:

Well, Rie Kugimiya voiced Alphonse in FMA, so yeah. lol
