Foshizzel’s Nominations for 2nd Annual Sai Mecha Tournament

Sit back and enjoy this massive list of giant robots!

Hello and welcome to my top ten mecha nominations for the epic Sai Mecha league! If you are scratching your head, wondering what the hell this thing is all about. Well, let me tell you. I’m sure at least some of you have heard of the Sai Moe league where you vote for the cute girls over the years of anime. There is one for the dudes of anime as well. With all these bishies and cute girls polls out there, where do us hardcore Mecha fans go? Well, we go to the Sai Mecha of course. Basically every giant robot fan out there on the internet submits a list of ten machines to ExecutiveOtaku (some of you might recognize him from THAT Anime blog). Anyway do visit the blog and see all the random drama as we fight and cheer for our favorite Mechs.

I tried to keep the spoilers low but still SPOILER WARNING! You have been warned…

10 – Gurren MK II

Yes the inner Code Geass fan was screaming at me for knocking this machine to number ten; however, I just could not bring myself to forget this super cool red Mech. What is not to love here? First off the bright red grabs my attention instantly and you know what red means right? It has to be seriously fast, right? And sure I know I have a hardcore weakness for redheaded anime chicks so Kallen gets points from me, but if you have ever seen this mech in action, you can see why I just had to list this machine.

 9 – God Gundam

Any fan of the G gundam series knows all about this super Mecha thanks to some random English dub quotes from the main pilot Domon Kasshu. On the design side of things, the God Gundam fits the classic Gundam color scheme complete with white, red, blue and of course yellow. The best thing about G Gundam for me was watching how each pilot controlled their machines and how they threw in martial arts for the combat side of things. So, please enjoy the ERUPTING BURNING FINGER! Damn that really make me go back in time.

 8 – Gurren Lagann

And you thought this was going to be a gundam list?! Just kidding! Most mecha fans out there have a hardcore love for Gurren Lagann, maybe you love all the oddball characters or the story? Or maybe you are like me and just love to see giant robots pound the crap out of each other! Whenever you get Team Dai-Gurren fired up you can always find the Gurren Lagann kicking ass and combining with every damn thing it touches. I mean seriously it combines with a battleship, the damn moon and it even battles a whole freaking universe! How can you top that?

7 – THE END type Zero

Every great hero needs an evil rival, right? Even though I know Anemone isn’t really evil, but you might as well call her a rival to Eureka. Every time this jet black machine challenged the team of Renton and Eureka, I always found myself cheering for the good guys, but the other half was spent rooting for Anemone to kick some ass! However, near THE END, yes pun intended, you start to have different views on his mecha and for that I just had to toss this machine onto my list.

6 – The Delphine

If you have ever seen any of the Break Blade movies you probably either love or hate the mechanical designs for the various mechs, but I haven’t found too many people that generally hate them. So, the Delphine looks just like the other machines in the movie series; however, it isn’t powered by quartz at all. Instead it acts more like a gundam using various types of tech inside…not to mention the speed and random ninja like weapons. Have you ever seen a giant robot throw a giant ass throwing star tied to a massive rubber band?! Yes, you haven’t seen anything until you watch the final battle of the last movie.

5 – Vox Aura aka Midori

MARU! Yes the Vox Aura or Midori has a special place on this list of crazy machines. Rinne no Lagrange was a huge hit for me, thanks to several lead characters like Madoka, Lan and Muginami. Now for the actual mech part, everyone remembers Madoka’s unique piloting skills were nothing fantastic or amazing; however, they were very comical for the first part and always left a fun impression on me. Design wise, Midori has a combination of white and neon green for the color scheme and yes I know the cockpit portion was of course purposely designed to show off “dat ass” from the pilots but I still thought to be an interesting design overall.

4 – Tauburn

KIRABOSHI BITCHES! Star Driver was either a hit or miss with most people, but I found it to be so damn entertaining! The series was filled with some of the most “unique” mechanical designs out there for a giant robot series. I mean you have a motocyle, a bull, a lion and so on; and then you have Takuto’s machine the Tauburn. I will admit after I saw the first reveal of that machine, I wasn’t too thrilled about the look, but I was sold after the first half with every damn battle because Takuto suddenly gained a new weapon or learned a new technique after winning the fight… So, if you can look past the oddball designs you might enjoy seeing this Mecha kicking ass!

3 – Nono

What, a human looking character?! Well, I would classify Nono as being something special from Gunbuster 2. While this character looks like your typical moe girl from any anime, I would say that Nono has a similar personality like Madoka from Rinne no lagrange and the looks of Lala from To-love-ru complete with bright pink hair of course. But Nono is a lot of fun to watch in the series. So, just what in the world is she anyway? I would call her an android themed character, only she never really figures that fact out until the end of the short six episode series after she transforms into a mech. Yes, Nono literaly becomes a giant robot complete with missiles and she can fire massive laser beams too! Always a plus point.

2 – Nirvosh type zero

Just in case you haven’t realized this by now, you can probably tell I really love Eureka Seven a lot! And one of many reasons for falling in love with this series will always be the idea of mechs on flying surfboards just like the Nirvosh. Halfway through the series the Nirvosh undergoes a transformation where it gains a slick new look and crazy speed! Yeah once you see it zipping around in the sky, you can see why I really love this machine.

 1 – Aquarion EVOL

Ohhh Aquarion EVOL, why are you so damn crazy!? Most anime fans either love this series or hate it, but for myself I am so addicted! Now the EVOL requires the pilots to combine their machines into one giant super robot, but what happens is a hilarious scene where the characters moan and gasp as they combine their “bodies” into “one”… Yes, I know sounds so perverted! It can be but this is more of a hilarious type of perverted fun…and this series is filled with some of the best cheesy lines of all time! Like bros before holes and countless others…so I will say this now GO AQUARION EVOL for the winner of the Sai Mecha! Are you with me?!

Anyways, thanks for reading my top ten mecha list! Good luck to the other super robots and stay tuned for the actual Sai Mecha tournament to start! GO AQUARION!!!!

Can you even imagine that there are 5 mechs on this list that I know and even love?! Good nominations, Fosh!

Nobody can win over Gurren Lagann’s crazy design for me but then there’s Tauburn and Aquarion EVOL with weird transformations to keep us entertained. Though, I have respect for Delphine and Kallen’s ever evolving mech, which have seen very awesome fights. I would have personally nominated Eva unit for sure too.

    • Foshizzel says:

Ahahaha that is amazing Kyo! Which ones do you recognize? I am guessing Midori, TTGL, Broken Blade, Nirvosh and the Gurren MK II? xD

Yep! I was going to throw Eva unit 01 on there or unit 00, but I wanted to choose some other ones like the Tauburn and Aquarion EVOL! Gotta love them combining robots <3

  2. BlackBriar says:

Nice post and nominations. More tournaments? There’s a lot of things going on this season. I don’t remember it ever being this busy. Does it have a division for every genre in anime? If it does, I would love to see what they would have for Yuri, Vampire, Harem, Action, Horror and so forth.

My votes go to Burning Gundam (for nostalgia), Midori (because Rinne no Lagrange is such a great show) and Nirvosh Type Zero (The idea of a robot on a surfboard is original and out of the box). I know there are 10 spots for the nominations but if there were more, would the Endlaves from Guilty Crown make the cut?

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah there are probably tournaments for everything anime and probably a few that are non anime? Well the mecha fans need somewhere they can fight it out over best giant robot! Undead/supernatural Tournament? That could work…

Yeah I grew up watching G Gundam for my first “starter” Gundam next to Wing of course on Toonami! Yeah I just had to throw Midori in there even though in reality she would get destroyed by the others hahaha. Nirvosh is good! Surfing robots? Hell yes!

I imagine the Endlaves are on some list out there, but they might be in a random joke vote? I know last time they threw together the “best pilots” poll and best captains and so on! Maybe I can suggest a joke poll?

    9. confuses me. I THINK you mean God Gundam, but you commit the UNPARDONABLE SIN of using the dub name, and you use a picture of Shining Gundam! MY BRAINS ARE WRACKED. Good choices though. Cue butthurt oldfag comment about how Getter Robo was blowing up universes before Gurenn Lagann was in diapers whippersnapper etc.

    • Foshizzel says:

Aaahahhh yes I shall fix this right away! I guess I confused myself, but thank you! Also the dub is for the lulz mostly…Time to fix that picture! Thanks again xD

LOL Nope no butthurt here I haven’t seen any Getter Robo so you are in luck! However I think you are right on about other mech shows blowing up universes waaaay before TTGL this is true.

  4. animekritik says:

Nice list, though lack of Bitch Commander Panty robot disturbs me.

    • Foshizzel says:

Thanks! I saw your list and I had a good laugh thanks to bitch commander panty robot! Now that is a excellent choice I totally forgot about her…damn! xD

      3. ALL HAIL THE GLORY!

      2. We need mechs with skate boards next yo!

      1. Indeed...

  6. anaaga says:

I know only three of them since I’m just recently exposed to the world of mecha (Not even done with ZZ), so my pick here will be Gundam. Even if I know all of them mechs, I’ll still pick G Gundam.

    • Foshizzel says:

fufufufu awesome! Did you submit a list to the Sai Mecha? You don’t have to list all 10 you can send a half list <3

YES! G GUNDAM FOR THE WIN! <3

  7. Karakuri says:

….As much as I love the Nirvash, my heart will forever belong to Freedom. Sorry, Fosh. xD

    • Foshizzel says:

Ahahah FREEDOM! And his unlimited laser spam of death and jesus kira yamato?! NOOOOOOO!!

Just kidding Freedom is a good mecha, but Kira can die in a fire >.> Wait he can’t ever die so he lives…FOR NOW!

  8. akagami says:

Hm, I don’t really consider myself a mecha fan (primarily romance, slice-of-life, and school life), but I’ve seen 9/10 of those (the only Gundam I’ve watched are Seed/Destiny & Wing movie). Does that make me a semi-mecha fan?

Of all the mecha I’ve seen, the only three that stand out to me are Freedom, Aegis, and Escaflowne.

    • Foshizzel says:

Sure! Seed/Destiny may not be my personal favorites, but wing movie was good stuffs! You should try Gundam AGE that is a great starter series if you want something like Seed/Destiny.

All great machines! Freedom is alright and of course Escaflowne that is another nice mecha.

      • akagami says:

I lied, I also watched Gundam 00, to my regret. I watched the beginning of AGE, but all the facepalming prevented me from seeing what was happening.

      • akagami says:

But Seed is awesome ^^ Seed got me interested in Gundam. Gundam 00 ended it.

      • Foshizzel says:

Ahh yeah 00 was terrible T___T especially S2…

  9. Judge says:

Interesting list. Totally forgot about the Delphine from Break Blade. As one user stated already, that Shining Gundam pic confused me. And Gurren Lagann > Getter Robo. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise 😉 If you’re interested, you can take a look at my picks too. I chose Noble Gundam for the lolz

    • Foshizzel says:

Why thank you! Yeah I saw your list ahahah great choices too! And lulz at the Nobel Gundam -high five-

  10. Yippy says:

Three, three! I thought I wouldn’t even recognize a single mecha on your list. Thanks, Foshizzel, for proving me wrong. (^o^) This is the first I’ve heard of a mecha tournament, keep us posted on the finalists and winners!

Anyway, great choice on Aquarion for #1, I second that motion! Gattai, holes and smells ftw. I don’t know why more people aren’t watching this…

However, in terms of sheer power and over the top badassery though, Gurren Lagann still manages to drill its way into my heart.

I’d nominate Vox Aura, but I still have yet to finish Rinne. Somehow, I just can’t find the will nor the motivation.

    • Foshizzel says:

      Awesome news!

HELL YA AQUARION EVOL!! I loveeeee that series so damn much have you seen the recent? One word…bananas…oh yes.

TTGL ALL THE WAY! However I had to give it to a new kid this time as much as I love TTGL others need more love.

Ahhh to bad Rinne was great! Although it was more fanservice for the first few episodes so that might scare a few off or Madoka’s personality? Give it a shot! Or wait for the second half in the summer.
