MetaVerse Episode 09 – Discovering Anime Addiction

We are joined by our good friends Chiaki and Mitsugi from AAA Podcast on this episode, where we talk about our fandom experience

We recorded this episode on 20th of August (time sure flies!), co-hosted by Kyokai, Jrow and Hato along with our special guests from AAA, Chiaki and Mitsugi. We delved into our obsession of how we got into the animanga fandom and became totally addicted to it. We share our shady stories and talk about our individual experiences. Oh also, POP QUIZ! Recognize all the characters on the cover; c’mon, we know you can do it! :3

End Note by Kyokai: We have been busy brewing some things up after the server migration but no worries, all planned activities are going spot-on except for the Anime NTM, which will be back soon too. Coming to the episode, there were some disturbances that Jrow has tried his best to edit out. We apologize for any inconvenience caused (said in a southern accent). This is our longest podcast to date but you know how things get when you are talking about the fandom, right?! We’ll try sticking to our one hour-one and a half hour length from next time onwards. Hope you enjoyed this chit-chat sessions.

For the next episode, we are thinking about concentrating on MetaQ alone and a possibility of live recording. What do you think? Would you logon at a specific time, if we were to live record for our 10th episode? (Something special for double digits) So, looking forward to your thoughts and ideas on this!

Thanks again to Chiaki and Mitsugi, who hung out with us on this episode. Much love <3

Ahahah this was awesome! Nice to hear from the AAA members so good, I have seen a few of the live recordings they are so interesting and fun and we get to see them on camera xD

I laughed so hard at the podcasts they like so awesome, and yeah we probably will spawn a few podcasts from our fans! Go for it!!

Hmmm they live close to Orlando? I should visit someday that’s only a hour from my house! Might be fun xD

My personal experience is similar to Jrows! I got my official start around Macross and DBZ and all the toonami and Adult Swim showed my sister Death note and Code Geass! I even showed my dad HoTD and he enjoyed it but wasn’t to into all that fan service.

I love the Index/Railgun light novels so good! Yeah I do read lots of manga lately I got into Onepiece,Bleach and Naruto manga recently.

Great post. This is a perfect topic to talk about. Anime is something that completely infectious. My Anime Addiction started when I started watching Toonami, Adult Swim and reading whatever manga I could get my hands on. First and foremost my favorite show is DBZ. Then along with shows like Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo!, Yu Yu Hakusho,.hack//SIGN and Rurouni Kenshin. I even got some of my cousins interested in anime and manga.

I’m especially a fan of whatever Funimation brings out like Trinity Blood, Moon Phase Black Blood Brothers, Claymore, Solty Rei, Witchblade, Burst Angel. After recently checking out the list on their site, they have a really big interest in vampire anime which makes things a lot sweeter.

    • Foshizzel says:

I love me some Funimation! They always go all out when they promote a new series even hiring cosplayers to dress up as certain characters I remember all those Strike witch things on youtube ahahaha so funny xD

Then again US only has two choices for dubs Funimation and Bandai! Well we have a third slowly coming back Sentai filmworks they have dubbed Clannad AS,Angel Beats,HoTD and a few others they are small but growing fast.

Yep like most of us we grew up on Adult swim and Toonami! Good times I remember staying up late watching Cowboy Bebop,FLCL,Inuyasha and several other big shows xD

      • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, those guys are awesome at what they do and they waste no time doing. Like HoTD, they’ve finished the english dub for Dance in the Vampire Bund. Now they’ve got their sights on Hidan no Aria, Freezing, Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka,Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Rosario + Vampire and Shiki. Man, that’s mindblowing, it’s almost every anime we’ve seen in japanese dub. Those Funimation VA’s have a lot of work on their hands but I’ll be waiting when they come out on DVD.

        • Foshizzel says:

Don’t forget Squid girl season one! Can’t wait to see who they decide to run with for actors any bet it will be all the cast from Angel Beats or Clannad AS…Well Sentai film anyway xD

Yep always exciting to re watch a series you finished in sub form then get right into the dub just to see what made the final cut, that’s what I enjoy and yeah I know there are some who rather listen to it in original form.

          • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, I can’t wait to see which VA they choose for the characters. One of my favorites is Christopher Sabat who plays Vegeta and Piccolo in DBZ. He has so many roles in that one anime that he basically owns it and whatever Funimation anime I watch, I can easily point out who he’s playing. One of the VA’s who’s tricky to figure out is Vic Mignogna who plays Edward Elric and Broly.

And my favorite female VA’s are Monica Rial, Carrie Savage, Colleen Clinkenbeard.

          • Jrow says:

Funi’s also got Steins;Gate, C and Deadman. One of those is turning out really great, another one had potential but still can be enjoyed, and the other one went bad by the end.

            • Foshizzel says:

Ohhhh yeah! Forgot Funimation snatched up Steins;gate,C and Deadman…hmmm awesome I can picture a few of the Funimation actors in those shows! I know the main characters probably will all be new actors to get them out there..

  3. Kidd says:

Oh man I cried at the end of K-on!! too and I also related to it so much. Also good to know some Kiwi anime fans are vocal on the web, Im in australia and totally relate with all of your problems with legality and availability.

also awesome podcast, keep it up guys.

    • Hato-kun says:

YES. You are now my best friend. No one understands why K-ON is sad.

    • Jrow says:

It’s pretty ridiculous that I recognized your name as a commenter from the Method to Madness podcast site. Thanks for listening, though I can’t relate to the crying while watching K-on! thing…

  4. Toori-chan says:

Oh Yeah! Black Rock Shooter!!! Boo(X10) to you Kyokai. But I can agree that the music is awesome, Braveheart’s my favorite. Oh, Shakugan no Shana III as well!!! Nice to hear from the AAA’s. Broke down in laughter a few times.

I started off my anime addiction when I started getting stuck up with Zoids Chaotic Century and Shaman King around the end of my elementary school life. I bought the Shaman King box set. Since then I bought new anime and my collection was getting higher and higher. I stop buying anime about a year ago and started gathering my anime online into my External HD and now its running low on space. Oh by the way, I have the full set of Tsubasa Chronicles manga. (Sorry for the long comment but I still have much to say)

    • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, not only was there Zoids Chaotic Century but there was .hack//SIGN and .hack//Roots. I’d make sure I’d do my homework so I could watch Toonami and on saturdays, there was Kid’s WB with shows like MegaMan NT Warrior, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Spider Riders. Things were a lot better back then than they are now with what’s been playing on TV. I’d take anime over any other cartoon in a heartbeat.

I have the box sets for Trinity Blood, Witchblade, Claymore, Burst Angel and three DBZ featuring Broly. I intend to get more box sets because I just can’t help myself, It’s really addictive. If anime is a drug, then this is a drug I can totally live with.

And you’re not alone on the running out of memory thing. I’ve been downloading anime for a while and now my hard drive is past the halfway mark. It’s time to buy an external hard drive.

    • Foshizzel says:

I will agree with Kyokai on BRS! For me I found the animation and music to be really good but the story I probably where I complain the most. Honestly I felt they tried to do to much they had like two stories bouncing back and forth from school to BRS world, but I hope the anime series can explain things better.

I remember a tiny bit of Zoids! I did like some of it then got bored I have no idea why.

No worries! We love long comments <3

  5. Kabitzin says:

    Interesting info about sheep…

This podcast got me through a pretty slow day at work. As for “peak” I prefer “local maximum” personally ;D.

    • Jrow says:

I wonder if I kinda set an odd trend for the other hosts to say that as well about peaking as a fan.

Thanks for listening. Sorry for both that loud wind impression midway thru the cast, and that the overall sound quality is a little off from what it usually is. There was a mic issue that I tried to mask best I could.

    • Foshizzel says:

That sheep comment Ahahahah killed me! So funny xDDD

  6. Yi says:

Love the discussion near the end on whether you’d grow out of anime… It’s something I think all fans eventually start wondering, especially as the age gap between most characters (high schoolers) and the audience increases.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah that does bring up a lot of questions if we will ever grow out of it! I don’t really know if I will I assume one day I might but not now xD

Yep age difference is probably the biggest factor in that.

  7. Overcooled says:

Oh mannn why does everyone love incest, what is thissss???

Hearing everyone’s anime habits and dark, dark pasts was interesting. Holy crap Mitsugi, you watch anime while doing so many different things. I can’t even watch anime and eat food, I don’t know how you do that.

    • Foshizzel says:

LOLOL True, well long as it stays in the anime world….

I was shocked too! I usually have to pay attention when I watch stuff xD

  8. Rekka says:

I love the picture you guys used for this episode =D And yay for AAA guest appearance ^^ I might check out some of your other episodes now XD

    Sincerely. the AAA trap.

    • Foshizzel says:

Mass character picture! Really awesome I think I have seen this a few times but always fun to see the random pictures we use on the podcasts, yes! Do listen to them xD

Nice to meet you then Rekka! You should meet Ness! our Metanorn trap xD

  9. fathomlessblue says:

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record at this point, but thanks for another great show. All your guests so far have been heaps of fun!

I love the whole idea of anime achievements! I’m sure I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but it would be great to see someone create a bunch of faux-awards (that could be continuously updated), kind of like boy-scout merit badges, for accomplishing certain criteria; i.e. being up to date with/completing a particular long series or franchise (Bleach, Naruto, Gundam, Macross), or watching a legendary terribad anime (Rio: Rainbow Gate, Macross 7), etc. Like Jrow, I’d like special recognition for marathoning Endless Eight. That took so much out of me, mentally, physically and spiritually! Make it happen Metanorn! 😉

Oh, and Hato, you really shouldn’t feel ashamed about watching K-on! I know it’s not a masterpiece or anything, but c’mon people it’s not that bad! There are some funny scenes and quite deep moments (buried underneath all the cake eating) to be found. You have my respect for enjoying the show…

… which I’m now retracting, as you haven’t seen Baccano! yet. Seriously, put down everything your doing and watch it straight away. It’s much better than Durarara; less fangirl-baiting bishies, dull subplots and pointless characters with no defined role in the show (as much as I loved Simon, he really does nothing!). I enjoyed Durarara, but it was nothing next to Baccano imo!

ps. The moment Chiaki mentioned sheep, I knew what she was going to say. This is what I get for living so close to Wales; it receives the same abuse New Zealand does, lol.

    • Hato-kun says:

“It’s much better than Durarara; less fangirl-baiting bishies, dull subplots and pointless characters with no defined role in the show”

God, too much of these. You pretty much outlined why I’m so morbid and jaded.

    • Jrow says:

Thanks much FB! It was definitely fun to meet up with Chiaki and Mitsugi after having been a long-time forum member over there.

Crunchyroll has some semblance of a trophy system, but it could be so so much better. Like I’m about to have watched all of S;G and Kamisama Dolls on there, just give me a badge saying I watched those shows on the site. A badge of support not only for the series, but for Crunchyroll and legal anime watching. Myanimelist would be good for the format, except that system would be easily cheatable.

I watched DRRR before Baccano. I love both, but I prefer DRRR.
