Deadman Wonderland – 08

You can’t change the system from within the system, the system changes you

This may very well be my last anime post this week before I lapse into video game mode. E3 is right around the corner, I want to 1. Provide the best coverage I possibly can and 2. Make a list of all the shit I need to buy as soon as it is announced. But let’s not mix gaming and anime quite yet. It is time once again for another crazy episode of Deadman Wonderland, posted right after my episode 7 post because I’m an idiot.

Don’t you hate cliffhangers that are resolved the next episode in the span of two seconds? I do. So you can imagine I wasn’t very happy to see Shiro pop out of the ceiling and conveniently send the monk away. With him out the way, Nagi can continue his persuasive speech to get Ganta (and now Shiro) to join their revolutionary rebel group.

Just minding your own business and then BAM! SHIRO CLEAVAGE IN YO FACE

They all gather to the headquarters, which is full of people lounging around and getting drunk. Nagi assures him that Rokudou is on the case, planning out every little detail so they can escape and shut this prison down. During inspection week where outsiders come and make sure the controversial prison is running smoothly, they plan to expose all the secret torture experiments to the public and cause a riot. It all sounds good, but Ganta ends up storming off anyways after getting teased by all the laid-back rebels.

Scar Chain isn’t the only group planning to exploit inspection week. Makina and her right hand girl seem to be using this as an opportunity to get their paws on all the data Tamaki has been hiding from them. His confidence is at an all-time high since the old man kicked the bucket and he’s in charge, so now’s the perfect time to strike.

Ganta talks to Senji about what happened, and gets an earful about Nagi’s past. His vocal chords were ripped out during a punishment game for losing a rigged Corpse Carnival with his wife. Not taking kindly to rigged matches, Tamaki decides to get Genkaku the monk to kill his wife anyways. Nagi is convinced the kid is alive and living somewhere, but he’s still lost a hell of a lot to this twisted prison.

Ganta ends up sympathizing with Nagi and joins the Scar Chain gang officially. Shiro tries to help with the plan too, but nooo, she’d just get in the way..even though she fights better than anyone else. As they prepare to spring their plan into action, Rokudou reports back to the Undertakers. Oh, hey, he’s a traitor. You have 5 seconds to be shocked. Done? Moving along.

It’s funnier if you imagine an invisible mop

Now it’s time for the Deadmen to use their powers to let hell break loose. Nagi shows off his explosive Owl’s Eyeball which is like an owl’s eyeball only in shape. Rokudou uses some sort of blood shield. Even a nondescript character uses his Branch of Sin to make a blood bridge so the bridge won’t sense that their weight is off! All in all a great idea until the support for the bridge breaks and a robot comes out to spew acid all over them.

One poor background characters gets entirely dissolved and run over. Everyone else runs for their lives, leaving only Karako behind to hold the melting bridge up. She throws the ever-important data chip of all the crooked actions going on in the prison to Ganta as she stays behind to (presumably) die. Unless, of course, DEUS EX MACHINA AGAIN.

WHERE IS THE EMERGENCY EYE WASH WHEN YOU NEED IT?

Cheer up, Shiro. At least you don’t die from a robot Senji killed in one shot.

Your hair will never be as smooth and silky as mine. That is why I am superior!

End Thoughts: I heard that a lot of chapters were crammed into this episode, but it doesn’t really show that much. It’s still really fast-paced since as soon as Ganta meets the organization they try to escape, but it wasn’t really bad. The worst part about it was it was how they decided to introduce a character and then reveal that they’re a traitor before we got to even know him. How am I supposed to be shocked when I JUST MET HIM? It doesn’t seem like their escape is going to get really far with a double agent planning the whole thing. Unless he’s a triple agent.

While there are still a lot of eye-rollingly ridiculous moments in Deadman that they want you to actually take seriously, at least things are staying more on the action side and less on the melodrama side. Watching Deadmen use their Branch of Sin in unique ways is always cool, especially Nagi’s Owl’s Eyeball attack. I say forget anything resembling a plot and just give me a badass fight between the Undertakers and the Deadmen. I want to see the little loli and that monk let their rage out!

As for predictions, well…I can’t see Shiro actually staying still in her room. Afterall, what would we do without another vehicle for a deus ex machina twist? <_< She might even pop up as the Red Man again! As doubtful as I am that this is going to end neatly, this little “escape” arc has some promise for providing me with more bloody battles. That’s always good! I might actually be looking forward to episode 9!

Preview: Although Tamaki is now in charge of everything, he has the Deadmen, the Undertakers, and Makina causing a ruckus. The only thing is, the Deadman might not even make it out with the overwhelming presence of the Undertakers. Will they really make it out alive? Will Ganta and Shiro ever ride that ferris wheel? Will the faces ever be less derpity? All this and more next week!

Bring in the big guns! LET LITTLE SUZY LOOSE!

How am I supposed to be shocked when I JUST MET HIM?” I totally agree with you on that one. D: I’m just like, oh, that guy looks like L. oh wait, he’s betraying them. figures. :\

There’s a really high probability that their plan is going to fail epicly, isn’t there? ): poor ganta and friends.

    • Overcooled says:

I didn’t even form an opinion of him yet and he became a traitor. It’s those eyes! The same dopey eyes as L!

So far they don’t seem to be doing so hot lol. I wonder if there will be more casualties soon

  2. amado says:

they should have kept the part where genkaku mourns for his broken guitar. and then his promise to “punish” her afterwards.

and dont worry, theres no deus ex machina thats gonna happen.

    • Overcooled says:

I think they didn’t have time for a lot of things…I would have appreciate more Genkaku though, that’s not fair D:

Oh, that’s good to know. More deaths!

  3. MikADo says:

    LOL on little Suzy :3
Yes Yes Yes stories are moving! more gross scenes, and more action!! public enters, rebellion, treason, traitor, anarchy, despair, hope, horror, shock, silence, and the madness!! give me moar!!

  4. Foshizzel says:

Just finished this episode! Damn that acid scene made me think of Mortal Kombat! Anyway guess Shiro is back to “normal” cute self and bed rolling = to damn cute to handle hahaha

I was thinking that plan wasn’t going to work anyway! Always someone playing the other side muhahahah, also random head bowling damn that guy is creeepppyy.

    Next week a killer loli! I like that sword she uses so awesome O_O;

    • Overcooled says:

acid reminds me of my chem labs where they tell us if we spill acid on ourselves we have to strip naked immediately and stand in a shower for 5 minutes. :/ lol

Yeah, I bet you like that loli, Fosh. Hurr hurr hurrrrr

    • Dan-go says:

Oh god, that game is illegal in australia :3 no r rating here, i bought it in singapore and illegal shipped it 🙂

  5. tomphile says:

Yeah, the pacing was a bit too fast, and the fact that Rokudo was a traitor wasn’t surprising. He just looked shifty.

    • Overcooled says:

Things are really whizzing by quickly. Especially if they have to introduce a character as being shifty and then say he’s a traitor right after

      • Dan-go says:

I like the pace of the series, i never watched this expecting it to win a tanazaki award for plot, its always about the action, and if they try to put too much story in you begin to notice the many and myriad plot holes (from the beggining we were critical of how 2nd degree evidence was used in a court case to convict him. or how he was given the death penalty etc etc. but this is a world where a prison is a theme park which is acutally an underground cockfight with people who shoot blood. it was never particularly well thought through

  6. Hime says:

Instant love for Rokuro here with him being voiced by JunJun :3

It was stupid how they were like oh hey, here’s a new character and by the way he’s more of a lying shit than Yoh. I really felt the squeeze of chapters this episode. They missed out a lot, and while it might not have been crucual to plot, it was nice just to be exposed to these characters and come to like them or dislike them. We get no chance of that here. Which is pretty lame.

I’m looking forward to seeing the little girl kick some ass next time. It’ll be amusing to see grown ups fail at the hands of a five year old xD

    • Dan-go says:

      :O spoiler tags!

      • Dan-go says:

oh dude now you got me thinking “little girl” as in the one in the undertakers? now i’m so anxious to see what she can do

        • Overcooled says:

Yeah, that was pretty dumb. :/ I guess they’re really rushing to try and get a decent ending, which I’m not sure will be actually decent.

Loli ass-kicking time! I’m excited to see what she can do! I wonder what her weapon is~

  7. Elyon says:

I knew it was too good to be true. There had to be a traitor in there somewhere, but I didn’t think it would be the obvious douche guy set up for you to hate already. >.> I kind of thought it would end up being Karako.

  8. Alynn says:

    Those Owl’s Eyeballs look awesome.
Yay the Necro Macro is back (I only like looking at it however)
Totally could tell that Rokudou was a traitor from the beginning. He had that look and personality going. And what happened with the video editing as well.
