Chaser John Doe shows up with his kitty harem

Fosh: Such a great week for anime! Lots of anime up to their sixth episode with lots of exciting developments. Madoka, Zombie and now Merry! So far so good and we have Star Driver and Index II about to end soon, which is a bit sad but at least we’ll have new stuff to watch. I have been lazy this week on my art, need to get something together for my Haruna drawing from Zombie. I am joined by Hime again this week so enjoy!

Hime: I’ve been looking forward to this episode all week. I hope it lives up to my expectations, but seeing as how cynicism is carved into my bones I doubt that’ll be the case. Still, I’m excited to see what the next installment of Merry has in store

Fosh: Plot this week was interesting with Yumeji getting injured and Merry going all epic on us to beat Engi. Yumeji returns home, passes out for a few days and has a long chat with Chaser, who heals him with some cat girls! And finally explains a bit about the more powerful dream demons out there.

Merry-“it’s dangerous to run in front of a sword”                           Yumeji-“it’s just a scratch….”

Yeah, you are so screwed Engi!

Keys? Is Merry the dream Janitor?!

Best BGM so far! And that power Merry has is AWESOME!

So, after Merry uses her power to shut down Engi’s dream world, she wakes up back in the real world and finds Yumeji unhurt from the outside. Guess it’s the power of dreams, mind over body? Could be. Merry also has no memory of how she defeated Engi, maybe that’s another side effect of using her BAMF powers. They return home and Yumeji crashes in his room and sleeps for a few days with Merry staying by his side.

Crazy Yui again! Well, she does have voices in her head.

Yumeji-“….cold side of the pillow, must hug…”

Meanwhile, at school people have started to notice other students becoming sad and having no more dreams or drive to achieve their set goals. The dream demons have been working overtime collecting vessels, specifically in Yumeji’s school. While he is passed out, Chaser John Doe arrives in his dreams and explains a whole ton of information on the more powerful demons. One of the bigger and dangerous demon is Heracles! No not the buff dude who punches people, this one is a Muma like Chaser; I guess proving Muma are higher rank demons.

Chaser knows how to party! I love the cat girl’s masks; so cute!!

Sauron, whatcha doin’ here?!

Phalos is the name of Heracles’ light house, which attracts other Muma to him in order to capture more dream worlds. So in short as Yumeji says, he acts as the leader of all. Phalos even got Chaser to become drawn to its power, so now they have to stop Heracles to prevent more demons from entering the real world. Before Yumeji returns to his own world Chaser tells him he is an ally of the truth! So, this makes him a semi good guy? Also, he healed Yumeji and kept him safe so either way, awesome! To make things worse, there is a more dangerous demon out in reality named Mistorteen, who loves to torture people to death. When Yumeji wakes up after being healed, he’s glomp attacked by Merry crying, of course.

Chizuru-“I want to eat your dreams, Isana”            Bet this dude to becomes Mistorteen! Them eyes man…

Damn, I love his chair! And his neko harem of course is a great extra.

End thoughts:

Fosh: The episode most fans were waiting for! So glad the drama and story continued, lately I felt the story was coming to a stop very quickly. Then again they have to build up the plot somewhere with the help of Yumeji getting beaten of course. Merry’s awesome attack was quite good! I am so curious to know what kind of power that is, the keys she holds makes me think she’s a gatekeeper or keymaster like the guy from the Matrix films. She probably has the power to hack into your dream world to gain access, so we can see why Heracles and Merry have a connection; something like a master and servant.

Nice to see the side characters are aware of events going on and not just dumb friends like in most shows. Yes, they won’t know the entire truth behind Yumeji and Merry’s secret life but they probably will find out sooner or later. Things are looking bad for Isana! Chizuru really wants to get hold of her dream after asking what Isana’s was left me wondering, if she was next on her list. So, I think Isana will find out about Merry soon!

The action scene itself wasn’t jaw dropping as far as animation goes, but still a good job from the poor fights leading up to this one. Music was great as always so can’t wait for this soundtrack. The only other thing that was annoying was probably Merry’s constant crying. Yeah, I realize her friend got hurt and what not but I dunno she cried a bit too much. However, it fits this show and Merry isn’t like most lead characters so for that I can forgive her cries.

Hime: Well, I sort of got my wish, I guess. Merry did go on a revenge fueled rampage…for all of three seconds! God dammit. It was looking so promising as well; she had the whole soul-destroyed ragdoll stance, some awesome animation and had turned on her deep angry growly voice, then it just kind of…stopped. And she doesn’t even remember it? I’m sorry, imo, that sucks.

It was two minutes of awesome followed by an entire episode of her just blubbering and crying, which considering how strong she is normally, is really awkward to watch. I know they’re trying to show her vulnerability but there are more subtle ways to do that. She shouldn’t collapse into a sniveling mess when things go wrong, it doesn’t evoke sympathy or make her likeable. Sorry.

The animation was really nice this time around, I noticed. There was a lot of cool shots and nice pallete changes. I like how everything went kind of drained and pastely when they got back to the house and Yumeji felt the full extent of his wounds. The ending was also really sweet, loved it. And John Doe! Can’t forget about him! He stole the show, and exposited a lot of plot in the process. Since we’re on episode six already it’s about time they introduced a “Final Boss” type character.

The whole Muma, Heracles and Phalos thing could have been explained better, but nevermind that…we’ve got Cat Girls! Yes, John Doe has his very own neko harem. Just give Yumeji a pair of felt ears and he can join in, Doe’s borderline flirting with him and dream stalking seem to suggest he’s not picky.I wish we could have seen him fight or something this episode though, he just kinda sits around and exposits which is interesting, sure, but it’s not very fun. And God did this episode need a fun injection. Between Merry’s crying and seeing losts of students at their school hovering about without souls it wasn’t exactly the cheeriest of episodes. Which is fine since next time looks to be beach party. I just hope they pull it off better than Dragon Crisis! but that shouldn’t be too hard

Preview!

Beach episode! Woooooo!! This will be the best “fan service” episode for Merry at least. Not that any major plot will happen aside from which girl has the bigger bust and bounce money is on Mei, Isana and Saki! Then again who knows Chizuru could surprise. So expect some fun comedy and bikini show.
