Shiki – 17

This is NOT a good sign for the humans

How did I NOT expect Shiki to troll us once again by not talking about Akira’s fate? I should know by now =.= Yeah, he’s probably going to die, but I want to see REAL PROOF OF HIM AS AN OKIAGARI! Aside from that, the story is pretty much chugging along at a decent pace. I get the feeling the chessboard is being set up for a final checkmate finale that will make us go crazy. For now, we shall savour each move~

Seishin has a bit of a nightmarish vision of standing alone in a bloodstained wasteland. From behind, a bloody Kyoko approaches him, limp like a ragdoll. From the gaping wound in her stomache that goes all the way through, he sees Toshio. Framed with flesh and mangled organs, he mocks Seishin for not coming to a decision.

Mmm, this show is so twisted <3

Seishin is just ASKING for trouble parading around in a forest at night, with a beacon to pinpoint his location (i.e. a flashlight). Luckily, he only comes across Tohru, who is too emo to do anything. Of course they make Seishin meet all the NICE, HUMAN-LIKE shiki to build up his sympathy. He comforts the poor blonde, quoting Sunako. Hmm…Sunako, huh?

This is one of those really sucky days for Seishin. You know the type? When villagers stop wanting your burial services and your dad suddenly disappears? Yeah, it happens to all of us. The only clue where old man panda might’ve lurched off to is in the ancient-looking laptop he left behind. The saved letters he wrote instruct the Kirishikis to come and take him, but to leave Seishin and the mother in tact. Seishin was the one who delivered that letter. He must feel terrible.

Back at the clinic, things are pretty sparse. All the patients prefer the Ebuchi clinic, and any patients they DO get just die. Oh, by the way, Junko died. Looks like Nao got to her. During a visit with one of their few patients, Toshio denies that they’re sick with the epidemic “disease” that’s been going around. Ritsuko finds this odd and confronts Toshio about it later, almost bringing up how she saw Nao, but deciding against it in the end. Listen, if you see an undead girl in the woods – PLEASE TELL SOMEONE.

“It’s chickenpox.” “but Doctor-” “DEFINITELY CHICKENPOX!!!”

This is quickly becoming Seishin’s worse day ever. Nothing makes a bad day worse than a manic little girl covered in mud at your doorsteps. The poor thing rants on about digging her own grave, wanting a posthumous name, and her dead family. Of course, the suicidal guy gives her a lecture on treasuring life. The poor monk is so troubled that he goes to the Ozaki clinic just to gaze longingly at his friend before disappearing. Immediately after, Toshio gets a call from Seishin’s mom, saying that he ran away. Where else would he run away to other than the Kanemasa house?

Some old man no one cares about is returning home from the Kagura dance practice late at night…Alarm bells should be ringing. Needless to say, he doesn’t survive very long in such an okiagari-infested village. Ritsuko is the next one to go out alone at night. A fellow nurse called her in distress, saying she was being held hostage. Ritsuko tells Toshio about it (and not, I dunno, the POLICE.) and runs out to go “save her” or something like that. While she DOES see the poor nurse, it’s not exactly the way she wanted to. After the moving truck carries the gagged nurse away, Ritsuko is assaulted in the middle of the road.

Toshio finds her on the side of the road, barely conscious. He drives her home, listening to a string of automatic phrases. Don’t talk to me anymore, I’m going to quit, the usual okiagari script. Toship grips the steering wheel in frustration. Now all of his pretty nurses are gone. HOW WILL HE SURVIVE? By the way, I have no idea wtf Natsuno is doing. He’s running around as if he has something important to do. All I know is that Tatsumi is watching, and doesn’t look all too pleased.

After a long tiring day, Toshio comes home to unwind…At least, that’s what he had in mind until a barely-clothed woman showed up on his couch. Chizuru is back, this time revealing even more skin in an outfit that resembles something you’d catch fish in. Toshio’s instant reaction is to shove a stake into her heart, but Gackt snipes him from the bushes and blasts it into smithereens. Poor guy, LOL.

Toshio tries to get information out of her as to why someone human, like Gackt, would want to live with a bunch of okiagari. He’s…human? I was under the impression he was the same as Tatsumi. Then again, Toshio has been wrong before. Chizuru doesn’t really answer his question, but he mentions that Seishin is now living with them. Despite being shaken by this news, he manages to slowly try to persuade Chizuru to let him live longer. He spins a story about wanting to see the deaths of all the villager’s who told him he was crazy, and how he’ll need more time to see it. Chizuru doesn’t buy it and bites him, making him destroy all of his documents. He is now a puppet of the Kirishikis…

Bonus Prettyboys:

Sometimes…Just sometimes…I think I’m too fabulous for my own good

Natsuno…AWAY! *flies off*

Natsuno-withdrawal syndrome…too…strong!

End Thoughts: I always get the feeling that an episode, like this one, is a set-up/confirmation episode. However, a lot of new things happened such as Seishin choosing a side, Toshio being bitten, and more people getting owned. It’s like each event is just a stepping stone for the next one, leaving me hungry for the finale where everything comes together. Each episode can not fill me, I have become voracious for more information and more progress. Never has a show made me this impatient for more episodes! It’s. just. so. addictive. O_O

Seishin tiem nowz. Thank goodness he stepped out of the neutral zone. While his decision to sympathize with the okiagari to this extent still baffles me (as in, I wouldn’t do it XD) it makes sense for him. He always comes across all the human-like okiagari like Sunako and Tohru. One look at the sinful little thing Megumi has become and I bet he wouldn’t be so soft-hearted. He really does seem to fit in with them though. Sunako has really rubbed off on him, she seems like a closer friend than Toshio now. Also, this has NO SEGWAY WHATSOEVER BUT, it’s interesting how people who tried suicide like Seishin are the ones who end up comforting everyone else.

Oh man, I didn’t expect Toshio to get owned this badly. He was so calm and confident that I believed in him. D= AND THEN THAT SLUT BIT HIM AFTER FONDLING HIM FOR 10 MINUTES UGHHH. How will this affect his plans with Natsuno? He’ll probably tell something is up when he sees Toshio all pale. I’m so sad though, I wanted Toshio to do something effective. THAT VIDEO IS GOING TO WASTE! Also, I didn’t expect Ritsuko is get owned either! I liked her! T_T Her sister was so cute too….

Preview: If you haven’t seen the preview, I suggest you do. Episode 18 looks like it will drop jaws and stop hearts. First of all, what looks like Natsuno’s dad is going completely crazy and attacking something. Secondly, the Kagura festival takes place in episode, and Gackt arrives with his gun again. We see him POINTING IT AT CIVILIANS. Does this mean the okiagari are finally making their oppression known to the surviving villagers? If they are, then this will quickly become a full-out war in which Toshio has become down for the count. Our only hope is Natsuno, who we see being attacked by Tatsumi. I’m betting Natsuno is fine in the end, but Tatsumi is not going to let him ruin any plans.

Aww, it’s okay, school always gets the best of us at one time or another. Besides, it’s better to be up to date with school than anime XD Hope you weren’t too sick over thanksgiving break?

    • Kyokai says:

If you wait for the umee release. You will get to see the preview. Horrible/Crunchy don’t have them usually.

      • ichigopockysticks says:

    I CAN’T BELIEVE I HAD TO SPOIL THE STORY FOR MYSELF BECAUSE I SAW THE MANGA ON SALE D;

    Show ▼

    • amado says:

yeah she is but its pretty brutal and I pity her…well after listening to what sunako said about her…
      a bit….

      • Captain says:

Sunako is just..even more brutal that she is.
It’s quite sad because she’s posing as her daughter..somewhat.

    • Overcooled says:

ME TOO. I haven’t spoiled the story for myself yet, amazingly. I am going to use my willpower and not click that spoiler tag until next week…lol

  3. amado says:

seems like they’re getting close to the manga now

“Ritsuko tells Toshio about it (and not, I dunno, the POLICE.)”
that wouldnt work anyway, I think all of the policemen have been switched with shiki

and if I remember right, that “manic little girl covered in mud” is kaori?

    • Overcooled says:

      Oooo it’s catching up 8D

The police officers might mostly be Shiki, but Ritsuko doesn’t know that…She should have the common sense to call someone who could actually help -_- What would she have done when she got there anyways?

Yep, that’s Kaori. Sorry I didn’t actually say her name, I figured that description + a picture would suffice. XD

  4. anaaga says:

it’s already this far. i can’t wait for the next episode!!!
and what’s up with that slut? she got gackt as her husband and she still roam around and bite other guys? ungrateful bitch!
i’m sorta confused abt seishin. chizuru said that he decided to side with the okiagari just bcz he came to the castle. but seishin didn’t say anything abt which side he’s gona support. what if he goes there just to pick his dad? xD

    • Overcooled says:

What happens when it catches up completely? O_O And I can’t believe Seishirou agreed to help his wife do this…

While Seishin didn’t explicitly say “oh, I’m joining the shiki now”, you can pretty much assume it. Even if he didn’t, he’s at the castle and Chizuru can rile up Toshio with this bit of information.

      • anaaga says:

natsuno’s gona be in lot of scenes, that why. i don’t have to rewind the same freakin scene 5 times in a row just to satisfy my inner fangirl. hehe. don’t worry, there’s more than lots of natsuno. fufufufufu

i’m so impatient with the scanlation that i’m starting to read the chinese RAW. man, the chapters these days sure are bloody…

  5. BlackBriar says:

Well, it was inevitable. The deal is that Seishin joined the Vampire’s side out of free will after finding out that his father allowed them into his room. Seishin does not side against the vampires because after hearing Toru explain that they will die if they don’t kill people. He joins their side because he doesn’t find it wrong that they have to drink blood the same way humans have to eat. He is showing sympathy for the Vampires so he sides with them. It’s like voting, if certain examples are shown, you get an extra voter.

Maybe it isn’t so bad for him. Just like Gackt, it seems those who choose their side willingly get the chance to stay human. But Sunako patience has finally paid off. The monk has come to her on his own. As I said before, she has her hooks in him deep. Though I’m sure she’s gonna take her precious time drinking his blood seeing how she has left him alive this long.

    • Overcooled says:

It seems like a combination of things caused him to finally go to the other side. Mostly, yes, his father’s letter. However, having to communicate with the conflicted Tohru caused him to spout some of Sunako’s lines…making him understand her and the okiagari even more. After a lot of thinking, he finally went to Sunako.

I was suspicious of him actually being human or not. It’s one thing to let the human live, but to marry one and have it act as the HEAD OF THE FAMILY? I guess it’s a perfect disguise, so they keep him around. (just answered my own question there…XD) Will they kill Seishin if there’s no use for him? Why can’t Sunako just leave him be and eat prey that isn’t interesting to have long conversations with at night?

      • BlackBriar says:

No, I don’t think she intends to kill him but her bloodlust might say otherwise. If anything, she’s trying to make him her lover since she’s been alone for a long time. I get the feeling he’s willingly letting her drink from him. They have a lot in common and that’s why they talk so often. It’s a relationship I hope doesn’t get broken. They both must certainly feel forsaken if they have this kind of connection and that he’s gone to this extent to keep it. Seishin’s really gonna be forsaken by the villagers if they find out about his betrayal to them and they WON’T take it lightly. I’m still wishing him good luck.

On a side note, am I the only one who sees this simalarity? Dance in the Vampire Bund: Mina Tepes and Akira Kaburagi; Shiki: Sunako Kirishiki and Seishin Muroi. Coincidence, right?

        • Overcooled says:

I hope her attachment to him overrides her innate hunger for blood. I doubt he’d resist if she actually gave in to her hunger. I almost feel like he’s waiting for it to happen. I hope the bond they have isn’t broken either, they’re so perfect for each other. Seishin knows the weight of his decision, so I guess he’ll accept whatever the villagers react with. Not that there’s even many villagers left anyways.

Oh yeah, those two. Similar except I think Akira is in less danger than Seishin.

        • amado says:

theres like a 50-50(and 1% to be like natsuno and tatsumi) chance that a person will die so sunako is hesitant to kill seishin

sunako also wants seishin to continue his book “shiki”
(and I will find it amusing if the ending shows that the series was all about seishin’s book)

          • Overcooled says:

I will not be amused, I’ll be angry if they make that the ending DX

Aww poor Sunako, such a dilemma she faces. I don’t think Seishin is a willful enough person to rise back up either, so it’s unlikely.

  6. Kyokai says:

I missed Shiki’s twistedness but oh man… this episode was something. I didn’t like one bit that Toshio got owned; I never wanted him to change even when I knew about Seishin that he would.

Chizuru creeps me out. Not because of her fashion sense but her maneater tendencies. This is one cougar, who everyone should stay away from.

NATSUNO! WHAT ARE YOU UP TO! -__-

    • Overcooled says:

I wanted Toshio’s plan to at least spring into action a LITTLE bit. But no…now they have control over him. Or at least, Chizuru does. Ugh, I hope she doesn’t make him her sex slave. She really is a maneater…literally and figuratively XD

NATSUNO, STOP TRAINING FOR THE MARATHON AND DO SOMETHING USEFUL

      • anaaga says:

if my yaoi brain is right, i think he’s running from tohru. he’s still pissed with tohru. isn’t that why tohru got the natsuno-withdrawal syndrome?

        • BlackBriar says:

Since we’re talking about female predators, is Megumi an apprentice to Chizuru or something? They’re beginning to resemble each other a lot. Maybe she’s the who turned Megumi in the first place because she has become a serious man-eater herself. But Megumi has surpassed Chizuru in the cruelty department hands down with the underhanded way she operates and shows no regret or remorse. A true she-devil.

  7. Sebz says:

I’m sorry if I took offense, but I really did like how your gave this episode such a humorous tone. Will wait for next episode (and flawless Gacktness) with you~

    • Overcooled says:

Thanks! <3 The show is already creepy, so you don't need me trying to creep you out again~

I need more Gackt. I hope he gets more lines soon XD

  8. Namika says:

This show is being plain unfair! ><" I wantz moar! *0*

    • Overcooled says:

I know, the suspense is killing meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

      • Namika says:

It became a tradition for Shiki to torture it’s watchers with a ridiculous amount of cliffhangers and intensity *_*

        • BlackBriar says:

I agree. The torture is unspeakable. If only we didn’t have to wait a whole week to see another episode. This anime is really rare. Each episode is better than the last. A sadistic persons guilty pleasure.

          • Namika says:

Nicely said about sadistic personality))))) I imagine if I was first watching this anime when it was fully released…. oO
Yup, this kind of series is really rare. Almost sucks you in it’s world or something like that…..

  9. Namika says:

    OO”
strange…….I wrote a longer comment, but it broke for some reason…. >>
